Heartless by Willow Winters ~ COVER REVEAL

At first, his words were harsh and his touch cold.
I knew he was a dangerous man and he could destroy me if only he wanted to.

That’s not what he wanted though.
It’s so easy to get lost in the touch of a man who’s powerful and unattainable.
A man who wants for nothing … except me.
Soft touches and stolen glances made my blood heat and my heart beat in a way I never knew it could.

Yes, it’s easy to fall into a haze of lust and desire.
But there’s a reason his reputation is one of a heartless man.
And I should have known better.

Nothing has thrilled me more than the thought of taking her how I’ve always wanted to.
To break her and make that soft voice of hers whimper with a strangled moan as I ravage her.

I’m feeling torn about this book, likely because I didn’t realize this wasn’t a standalone.  In my defense, there is no mention of a series or any other indication of Merciless having a cliffhanger.  That being said, the story was compelling, and I was completely invested in it for the entirety of the novel.

I hated to love or loved to hate, I’m not sure – it’s a fine line, Carter.  He was awful.  At this point, I’m really on the fence about him.  He’s mean, he’s demeaning, he’s cruel, but even with all that there is still something in him, small moments of compassion, the fact he was forced into a future he didn’t choose, that makes me want to like him.  Carter was quite an enigma in Merciless, and I’m hoping to figure out more about who he is in Heartless.

Aria isn’t much better, though I do feel more sympathetic toward her.  Her ups and downs, backs and forths, are frustrating.  I feel like I never know what she’s going to do or how she’s going to react in a situation, while I understood her motivations I didn’t understand much else about her.  Her paradoxical behavior was intriguing and understandable given her extreme circumstances.  I do hope that we’ll see more stability from her in the next book.

The relationship between Carter and Aria is tough to stomach.  There is such a disparity between their statuses and the power they had in their relationship; it was hard to decipher what was chemistry, what was Carter exerting his will control over Aria, and what was Aria’s self-preservation.  It was dark, twisted, and taboo but still oh so fascinating.  I felt dirty – in the best way – while I was reading this book because I was rooting for them so hard, even when I knew I should want Aria to have a choice in her life.

Merciless enraptured me.  I couldn’t consume it fast enough, even when I knew I was coming to the end and there were nowhere near enough pages left to complete the story.  The pacing was spot on, between the stuff going on with the ‘war’ Carter has been pulled into, to Aria’s imprisonment, to Carter’s history, there were so many moving parts I needed the next morsel of information as much as I needed my next breath.

Willow Winters is a gritty, intense writer.  Her books always leave me reeling and clamoring for what might be coming next.  She is excellent at building tension to a fever pitch and letting it linger to the point of discomfort.  I love the rawness she exhibits in her prose, it lends well to the types of stories she writes.  There hasn’t been a book of hers I’ve read and not wanted more of, but never so much as I did with Merciless, I’m going to be anxiously awaiting the release of Heartless.

Possessive by Willow Winters ~ RELEASE BOOST

From USA Today bestselling author Willow Winters, comes a provocative, standalone, contemporary romance.

Some men are born with a black heart and a tainted soul.
I never liked to admit it back then; I thought I could outrun who I am and lie to myself.
But I accept the truth now.

It’s in my blood and in my bones. In every impure thought and desire.
I tried to leave. To do the right thing and walk away from my past.
But then she came back into my life.

Stumbling towards me and looking up at me as if I’m the one she’s been looking for all this time.
As if I could be her savior and take her pain away.
If only she knew.

She turns me into what I hate most about myself.
Selfish, ruthless, possessive.
I tried to be a good man. To be cold and distant and warn her away.

She should have taken the hint and run.
She didn’t…
And now she’s mine.

After reading She Asked for It, I was desperate to get my hands on Daniel’s story.  He was an intriguing side character in that book, and I longed to find out more about his history and motivations throughout the book.  There was no way I could anticipate just how complex his life was or exactly where his story would lead.

Possessive is a standalone novel, though it has ties to other books Willow Winters has written and is the jumping off point for an upcoming novel the crossover with the She Asked for It is negligible, and that book is not necessary for the understanding of this novel.  I have a feeling I’m going to be glad to have read Possessive before reading Merciless.  Possessive is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Addison and Daniel.  There are also a couple of surprise narrators toward the end.  There are a number of flashbacks that help put Addison and Daniel’s relationship into perspective.

The way time passed in Possessive was deceptive.  Everything happened over the course of only a few weeks, yet there were years of hurt pain and secrets between Addison and Daniel.  And I felt each of those years of loss, loneliness, and love while I was reading.  It felt like a slow-burn romance while having the present timeline of a much quicker love story.  That push and pull of the past and present made their story feel even more desperate and unique that it already was.

The history, the loved ones, the guilt Addison and Daniel shared made this book.  Their backstory and their shared loss, had it been any different – any less momentous – it would have made this into something I may have hated.  Their interactions in the present weren’t always kind, often bordering on cruel, but with the knowledge of what they’d experienced, those moments felt very intimate and apropos to the development of their love.  They needed those moments to hate one another to heal the wounds they’d suffered with for so long.

I wish the end of this book, of Daniel and Addison’s story, in particular, had been more fleshed out.  I felt like their story was ended rather abruptly in favor of putting the pieces in motion for Daniel’s brother’s book.  I have no doubts about the state of their relationship, but it still seemed unfinished.

Willow Winters is a powerful writer.  She’s able to wring out emotions and make her readers live in her books.  With each book I read of hers I feel a deeper connection with who she is as a writer.  The way she always makes me feel slightly uncomfortable, a little off kilter when I’m reading her books is – gah – it’s enthralling.  I know every time I pick up a new Willow Winters novel I’m going to be in for a ride, and it won’t be easy or predictable.

GIVEAWAY!! She Asked for It by Willow Winters ~ Release Boost

DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.

You’ll tell me you don’t… but you already think you know what my story’s about.

You have no idea.
Just like the people sitting in this courtroom.
She asked for it.  That’s what they keep saying.

And no, it’s not because my skirt was too short or I was drunk at a party.
It’s nothing like that.  It’s because of what I like and how I like it.

They’re judging me as I sit in the front row, my eyes drawn to the man on trial.
If I’d known it was going to end like this, I never would have gone home with him.
But he’s the type of man I just can’t say no to.

I wanted to feel his lips kiss down my neck.
I dreamed of running my fingers along the rough stubble on his jaw.
I craved his hands on me, pinning me down.
I needed to whisper his name in the dark, late at night.

You still think you know what happened? You don’t.
He’s innocent and I enjoyed every second I was with him.

Let me tell you my story … all about how I asked for it.

This book was not at all what I expected. I was fairly sure I had an idea of what I was getting into when I started this book, but I was mistaken. It was a thought-provoking story, and I found myself completely involved in Allison and Dean’s romance. While it was different than I’d anticipated, it was for the better that my preconceived notions about the premise of this book were wrong.

She Asked for It is technically a standalone novel; there is a free prequel novel, Too Easy, that does add a little to Allison and Dean’s backstories, but you could read She Asked For It without first having read Too Easy. The novel is written in dual first-person perspective, in Allison and Dean’s voices. Willow Winters has another book coming in this series, Give it to Me, and it will tell the story of one of the supporting characters from She Asked for It.

As I said, the unexpected storyline in She Asked for It is what made this book so good. There was a completely unexpected piece in the portrait of Allison’s past, one I thought I’d figured out but was mistaken about. That part – the most important part – of this book is what made the story, for me. I loved the way Willow Winters worked it into the overall narrative of Allison’s past.

The combative nature of Allison and Dean’s relationship was at times difficult for me to watch. While it was always evident they cared deeply for one another, some of their interactions were quite harsh. After learning about their pasts and the things that had broken and scarred each of them, those interactions made far more sense and felt true to the characters. Ultimately, neither of them could have found anyone better to love, support, or help themselves heal. There was definitely something in each of their broken parts that needed the kind of broken the other was to fill in the empty pieces.

My only wish for this book would have been that the trial, which played so prominently in the cover copy, have been more integral in the book. While it was a very important part of their journey, it was only a very small part of the novel. The book wasn’t lacking for it; I had just been expecting there to be more of it based on the blurb.

Willow Winters is quickly becoming a must-read author for me. Each of her books draws me in with their heavy themes, and they all have a darkness that speaks to a part of me that is fascinated with things frowned upon by polite society. At first, I had a hard time with some of the transitions in her books, but the more of her work I read I have come to appreciate how she uses that abruptness as a literary device. I can’t wait for what all she has in store for me in the world she established in She Asked for It.

GIVEAWAY!! Give it to Me by Willow Winters ~ Cover Reveal

No one knows what I think late at night, all alone in my bedroom.

How could they when I’ve never spoken the words?

He seemed to sense it though.  His eyes pierced through me, stripping me and baring my darkest secrets.

Maybe it’s because I fantasized about him.  It was his lips on mine, his hands that pinned me down.  His rough stubble that scratched along my neck as he told me what to do.

It was natural that my thoughts would be consumed with him.  After all, I’d fallen in love with him years ago, but it could never be for so many reasons.

I should have kept my mouth shut.

The second the words were spoken, there was no stopping them.

“Tell me you want it,” his rough voice cut through the night and I couldn’t resist.  It was a command I’d fallen prey to, and that’s where my story really begins.

I told him everything.

And he told me he’d give it to me.

Even if it killed me.
