Irish charmer Kieran Doherty has been a fighter at Driscoll’s Gym for most of his life. He’s been content to let his best friend take the spotlight, now it’s his turn to make a name for himself in the world of heavy weight champions. Falling in love is the one thing he vowed never to do, but meeting Marie changed everything.

Whitney’s 4.5 Star Review

4.5 Stars for one my most anticipated books of 2017!

Gah! I’ve been waiting for Kieran’s book since The Hurricane was first published. R.J. Prescott created an entire brood of hot, Irish boxers (and their friends) that you just want to keep reading about. I do recommend reading The Hurricane and The Aftermath (at least book one) if you think you want to read the whole series. You’ll get some good background info on Kieran and his lucky lady, Marie.

Marie is such a sweet heroine. I loved her in previous books and am so happy she is the one to get Kieran and all his sexy. Honestly, with Kieran, what you see is what you get. We’ve gotten to know him pretty well from previous books so it’s no surprise that he’s a total sweetheart, insanely sexy and protective of his friends. He wasn’t looking for a girlfriend but when he falls, he falls hard for Marie.

She’s actually the hold out in the relationship for quite a while and to keep this spoiler free, I’ll keep my mouth shut about the rest of the storyline. I would like to request (i.e. beg) for a potential spin-off for her brothers though (you listening, R.J. ?). They’re hilarious and inappropriate and stole some of the scenes they are in.

There is quite a bit of boxing in this book as it’s Kieran’s time to shine in the spotlight and try to win a title but it isn’t as big a focus as the books before. But you still get all the wonderful characters AND a few answers for some lingering questions about Liam. Honestly, the beginning of the story did throw me a bit because there is quite a lot of time devoted to Liam (who is a side character) and this continues somewhat throughout the book. Once I got more of Kieran and Marie, it didn’t bother me and I felt more connected to everything that was going on and Liam’s storyline ends up being a beautiful addition to this book.

I’m pretty sure the author tried to give me a heart attack though towards the end of the book. I legit had to set my iPad down and take a walk for a bit to nurse my book anxiety. But I suppose when an author can make you that crazy, it’s a good thing!

I adored the end of the book and I’m super excited for the next one in the series!

EXCERPT:

When I finally plucked up a bit of courage, I peeped out of the curtains to see Kieran throwing stones at the window.

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair,” he mock shouted, when he caught my eye. I opened the window to whisper loudly back at him.

“Are you high?” I asked. “Why didn’t you just ring the doorbell or call me?”

“I thought this would be more romantic,” he said.

“If I ignore the fact that my nipples probably have frostbite, I am feeling romanced,” I replied. He looked pained. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“You said ‘nipples’ and now I can’t think of anything else,” he replied, making me smile.

“Now I’m down here, what’s the chances of seeing an accidental nip slip?” he asked.

“Depends,” I replied.

“On what?” he asked.

“What’s in the bag?” I said.

“Hot chocolate and warm doughnuts,” he said, holding up the bag as if to barter.

“Well, I would have said slim to none, but fresh doughnuts might have just tipped the odds in your favour,” I replied.

“Yesss!” he said, fist bumping the air in victory.

I closed the window and ran to buzz him in. He bounded up the stairwell, his heavy footsteps echoing loudly in the hallway. When he got to my door, he looked me up and down, taking in my short royal blue, silk pyjamas. Dropping the sack, he speared his hands into my hair and pulled me into a kiss that had me melting. Kier didn’t kiss with just his lips; he did it with his whole body. Without shoes on, I was tiny in comparison, but inside of the cage of his huge arms, I felt protected and safe. Despite his size, his lips were so gentle. He didn’t treat me like I was fragile, but like I was precious, as though every touch was one that he was experiencing for the first time and memorizing for later.

Feeling bold, I traced the seam of his mouth with my tongue, and when he parted his lips and touched his tongue against mine, I groaned. Every sensation was too much, and not enough. Breathless, he pulled away from me to nuzzle his face in the crook of my neck. I reached up and gently stroked the short hair at the back of his neck, making him sigh.

Whitney’s 5 Star Review

The Hurricane is on my top of 2015 list and I am so happy to say The Aftermath will be joining it.

I was pleased with the way The Hurricane ended but I still thought O’Connell, in particular, had more to say. He may have started his HEA but I had a feeling it wasn’t going to come easy. And I was right. Luckily, this is from his POV and being in his head made me swoon all over again.

In the wake of Emily’s past, she and O’Connell’s fight for their future is just beginning. Now married and happy, O’Connell has to manage his career with his wife and friends. And the threats of the past (in all their forms) aren’t over.

The Aftermath ties up all the loose ends from book one amazingly and with the same heart and emotion. I love these characters even more now and I cannot wait for Kieran and Tommy’s stories. The rest of the side characters are still there and entertaining as always.

I really can’t say enough about this book so I’ll stop trying. Highly recommended and I know I’ll be re-reading this series!

Excerpt:

He grabbed my hand and pulled me to a stop facing him. He moved in so close that our noses were almost touching.

“Tell me you can feel this. I need to know I’m not the only one,” he spoke gently.

“I feel it,” I whispered, staring at the ground. “But I’m not doing anything about it. Everything that you make me feel is completely overwhelming, and I can’t give you what you need, not even close. I don’t want to talk about why I am this way, but just offering you friendship is a big deal for me right now.”

I finished my rant feeling more desperate than ever. This big, strong, beautiful, terrifying man had feelings for me, but seriously how long would they last? I was getting better, but I was afraid of my own shadow most of the time. I was small, weak, and lacked any self-confidence. O’Connell was dangerous, addictive, and so sexy that I was consumed by lust every time we were in the same room together. He used his body like a weapon and the danger attracted women like a magnet. With that many women, all vying for his attention, what little charm I held for him would fade like mist in the morning sun. If I let him in, he had the power to break what little of me was left whole when I couldn’t keep him.

Reaching out one giant, scarred and calloused hand, he tucked a wayward curl behind my ear. He lifted my chin with his knuckle forcing me to meet his gentle gaze. He looked so happy and intense right now that I could feel my eyes welling up. I never thought that anyone would ever look at me like that.

“I know I’m scary and loud. I’m fucked up, and I’m gonna fuck up with you a lot because I’ve never done this before. I don’t date girls, I fuck them and walk away because that’s what they expect. It’s all they think I’m good for. I’m not smart like you, and I know I don’t deserve you. Right now, I’m dirt poor, but one day, I’m not gonna be. I will fight to make something better of myself, to be someone better. Someone you can be proud of. If you need time, then I’ll give you time. If you need friendship, then I’ll give you friendship. But you’re mine, and when the time is right, when you’re ready, I’m coming for you.”

I nodded, so close to tears I knew that if I tried to speak, I’d completely break down. I swallowed hard, and the tears fell anyway. O’Connell wiped them away with his thumb and gently pressed his big firm lips to mine. Just like that, my fears were forgotten. The kiss was gentle, but fireworks exploded all over my body. It was like he had invigorated every cell with life. The touch of his lips wasn’t enough to satisfy, only to feed my addiction. I knew in my head that I wasn’t ready for a relationship, but my body wanted to drown in the revelation that it could feel something other than cold, hunger, and pain. It was a kiss both chaste and pure and everything I hoped that my first kiss would be, because everything I gave to him, I gave freely. Slightly out of breath, our lips parted, and he rested his forehead back against mine.

“I’m gonna give you the fuckin world, baby,” he whispered against my lips.

He kissed me again quickly and grinning like a kid, threaded his fingers through mine.

“You know friends don’t hold hands,” I whispered, knowing that there was no way that I was letting go first.

“Huh,” he grunted. “Me and Kier hold hands all the time.”

Whitney’s Five Star Review

The Hurricane may be the best debut novel I’ve read. Certainly the best one I’ve read in a long time. I don’t even normally read fighter/MMA romances but something about the synopsis just dragged me in. And once I started reading, I couldn’t let go.

Two lost people who find each other at the time they need each other the most make for a very sweet romance. I loved the character development and thought the story flowed very well. Emily is a strong heroine though it takes her some time to realize this. And O’Connell… be still my heart. He’s a foul mouthed bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks but he has a heart of gold. And once he sees Emily, there’s no going back.  It just takes her some time to realize it’s safe to give her heart away.  When you learn of her past, her shyness and timidity make sense.  She’s a beautiful person with a beautiful soul.  This is what draws O’Connell to her and away from the one night stands that are his norm.

The author is British and the story is written in a British/Irish style which I loved and found to be a breath of fresh air. I’ve read British authors who try to sound American so I really appreciate Ms. Prescott’s writing in the form she knows best!

This can be read as a stand alone although I understand there will be more to O’Connell and Em’s story. The side characters are also great so I’d love to read more about them as well.  Keir and Tommy had me chuckling several times.  And yes, I even swooned a bit over them as well.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough.  Good writing and a great case of characters make this a book you don’t want to miss.  Plus you’ll be able to add a few new book boyfriends to your list!
