That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.

Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?

Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

I’ve been in a bit of a review rut of late so I am going to change it up a bit for this book. Let’s call this Ode to One True Loves – Patricia’s Profession of Love

I love the way Taylor Jenkins Reid made me experience the story concept as if it was the first time it’s ever been told. I hung on every word as if my life depended on knowing what would happen next. The anticipation of seeing how it would play out was intense and so fulfilling it in the end.

I love the way these characters struck a chord with me, each in their own way, and made me feel so passionately about them and their happiness. They were well-developed likeable characters that felt very real to me. They left their mark on my heart and I won’t forget Jesse, Sam or Emma.

I love the way my heart hung in the balance just as Emma’s did – teetering between the past and the present. She fiercely loved two very different men who brought two very different realities to her world. Emma’s journey to self-discovery was equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming.

I love the way my emotions were never really stable. I cried happy tears, sad tears and even just because tears. This is the gift of Taylor Jenkins Reid. She is a master at delivering stories brimming with emotion and ensures you feel every single thing.

I love the way this story made me to reflect on the two great loves I encountered in my life.

I took an incredible journey with this story and my heart is full of love and appreciation for every minute I shared with these characters. I hope you will take the journey for yourself and experience the writing excellence of Taylor Jenkins Reid.

ABOUT MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE

At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college, but on the heels of a disastrous breakup, she has finally returned to her hometown of Los Angeles. To celebrate her first night back, her best friend, Gabby, takes Hannah out to a bar—where she meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

It’s just past midnight when Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. Ethan quickly offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay.

Hannah hesitates.

What happens if she leaves with Gabby?

What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into surprisingly different stories with far-reaching consequences for Hannah and the people around her, raising questions like: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?

Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.

 WHITNEY’S FIVE STAR REVIEW

A unique story about how the decisions we make can alter our path, Maybe In Another Life is emotionally powerful, yet fun.

This story follows one young woman and the consequences of what seems like a simple decision… to go home from the bar with her ex-boyfriend after years apart or to return home with her best friend.

The novel is told by alternating chapters. One chapter with what her life is like if she goes home with her ex and the next chapter with her life if she goes home with her friend. Since the timeline stays the same, it’s very easy to follow and flows well.

What I really appreciated about this book is that none of it follows a cookie cutter happy path. With each decision, I found myself smiling in some areas, wanting to break my Kindle with others and tears were definitely shed.  I loved and hated every character at some point.  Hannah is a realistic portrayal of a 29 year old woman who hasn’t quite found herself and you can’t help but root for her to find happiness in each of her character’s storylines.

No spoilers here but I urge you to try this book for it’s unique spin on romance and how each decision we make can affect our lives. I am still conflicted about the ending. It was not perfect but at the same time, it felt real.

Review – After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Cover

Title: After I Do

Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid

Release Date: July 1, 2014

Publisher: Atria an imprint of Simon & Schuster

 Synopsis

From the author of Forever, Interrupted—hailed by Sarah Jio as “moving, gorgeous, and at times heart-wrenching”—comes a breathtaking new novel about modern marriage, the depth of family ties, and the year that one remarkable heroine spends exploring both.

When Lauren and Ryan’s marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes.

Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, quickly finding that her friends and family have their own ideas about the meaning of marriage. These influences, as well as her own healing process and the challenges of living apart from Ryan, begin to change Lauren’s ideas about monogamy and marriage. She starts to question: When you can have romance without loyalty and commitment without marriage, when love and lust are no longer tied together, what do you value? What are you willing to fight for?

This is a love story about what happens when the love fades. It’s about staying in love, seizing love, forsaking love, and committing to love with everything you’ve got. And above all, After I Do is the story of a couple caught up in an old game—and searching for a new road to happily ever after.

Patricia’s 5 Star Review

After I Do takes you on a journey through the relationship highs and lows of Lauren and Ryan. It starts out by providing the back story of how they met, fell in love, and ultimately solidified their relationship with a marriage. After the wedding vows were spoken and the honeymoon phase was over, what Ryan and Lauren found was not the happily ever after they envisioned.

“… what hurts the most is when someone does something out of apathy.”

Instead, they reached a point in their marriage where they were indifferent towards one another. There was no conviction, no drive, and no desire. They were simply two individuals cohabitating under the same roof and barely acknowledging each other’s presence. While it was an ugly thing to see unfold, they finally acknowledged the impasse of their relationship.

“…the evidence of how ugly our marriage has become and yet proof that we are tied to each other. We can hate and love, miss and loathe each other all within the same breathe. We can never want to see each other again while never wanting to let go.”

As their marriage hung in the balance, Ryan and Lauren chose to navigate a year apart in the hopes that they could rediscover the love that once knew no bounds. After all, marriage is what happens after you say I do.

I love to read about the chase.  It’s exciting and terrifying at the same time. Part of my love of the chase is the happily ever after that you hope ensues. Most books will end with some derivative of that as it provides closure for the reader as well as the author. However, most stories I have read don’t take on what happens after the pursuit, the engagement, and the wedding like this story does.

There is no significant event the leads to the demise of Lauren and Ryan’s marriage. It’s somewhat of a normal progression of time between two people in a long term committed relationship. Sadly, it’s something my girlfriends and I have discussed countless times through the last 15+ years of married life.

I have never read a book that hit so close to home and touched me the way this story did. While I normally feel like an outsider observing a story as it unfolds, I felt a connection to Lauren and it was an eerie feeling to read about things that were so sadly familiar. My heart ached for both Ryan and Lauren as I watched their marriage crumble and their love atrophy. While their course of action may have been unconventional, it was necessary for them to take some time away from each other. In doing so, it gave Lauren and Ryan an opportunity to see things through different eyes.

I admired them both for taking such a drastic step to save their marriage. While some may view it as an evasion of the issue, I saw it as a significant step towards restoring their relationship. This story was heartbreaking, heartwarming and funny. It made me cry, smile and laugh, and I enjoyed every moment of the story. While it was my first book from Taylor, it most certainly will not be my last.

Whether you are single, married, or in a long term committed relationship, this book can be enjoyed by all readers who enjoy romance and all that it entails.
