Irish Kiss by Sienna Blake ~ Sarah A’s Review

Saoirse

I wanted him since the day I met him. Long haired, tattooed and tall as an Irish giant. He was more than just handsome, he was drop dead gorgeous. And the only one who ever truly cared. It didn’t matter to him that my father was a criminal and my mother a whore. He saw me, understood me.

I could be anything I wanted, he said.
Except his.
Because I was too young and he was my Juvenile Liaison Officer.

Diarmuid

It’s been years since I last saw her. No longer a girl, she has a body of a woman. When our eyes met again, I saw the only one who ever broke through my asshole mask. She never judged me. She saw me, accepted me.

She could be anything she wanted.
Except mine.
Cause she’s only seventeen and I’m trying my hardest not to fall for her.

If I give in, she will ruin me.

*This is a slow-burn, angsty love story spanning across a seven-year time period with sexual situations and drug-use involving characters under the age of eighteen.
Irish Kiss is a complete standalone novel with a Happily Ever After, but damn, it is going to hurt along the way.*

If you read and loved All the Ugly and Wonderful things and loved it, this book is for you. If you hated it or never wanted to read it, then this book may not be one to add to your TBR. It’s not quite as dark or morally questionable as that book was, but it’s darn close, and I loved it for exactly that reason. I love when a book pushes limits without quite crossing the line into something irredeemable.

Irish Kiss is the first book in Sienna Blake’s Irish Kiss series. There was a little glimpse into the lives of the next two heroes in this book, and I’ll tell you, I can’t wait to see what Ms. Blake has in store for us. Irish Kiss is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Saoirse and Diarmuid.

Irish Kiss was an interesting take on a mentor/mentee relationship and how having a person who genuinely cares with no strings attached can lead to a deeper connection than either person was looking for. Both Saoirse and Diarmuid sorely lacked in the kind of devotion a person needs from their family, especially in their formative years. Diarmuid eventually found something akin to that type of love but was still in need of acceptance he hadn’t found elsewhere. Saoirse had never experienced love that didn’t come with expectations, even into adulthood, so when she found the kind of unwavering support and faith Diarmuid offered her, it was inevitable that she’d depend on his steadiness.

I can not properly express how much my heart hurt for these two, both for the things they’d lived through and for the love they both held but couldn’t explore. It was painful to watch them each struggle with the lives they had and the decisions they felt forced to make. The love they had for one another felt so real, so pure, it was hard not to root for them to be together even while it was morally repugnant. The connection between the two of them was visceral, and I ached for them to explore it, regardless of the consequences.

I only have a couple of wishes for this book. The first would have been to see more of Diarmuid’s past. We got small glimpses of it, and know the broad strokes, but he just seemed so interesting. I would have loved to know more about what made him who he was. I also didn’t understand Ava’s motives from the beginning, she didn’t even seem to like Diarmuid, so I had no idea why she was so intent on keeping him. Having her motivations regarding him – from the beginning – would have helped clarify that entire storyline.

I first discovered Sienna Blake when she published Paper Dolls, and I have loved everything she’s written since then. She has a unique voice and writes books about people from all different walks of life. She’s one of few authors who can write about a jaded billionaire with the same accuracy and passion she can write about a destitute child. Her books all have an underlying darkness that I find fascinating. I also love how she uses the locale of her books to help tell her characters’ stories. Honestly, I’m just enamored with her work and can’t wait for whatever she’s working on next.

Diarmuid let out a sigh. “I don’t want to fight.”

“Who’s fighting?” I said through gritted teeth.

“Fine. See you next Friday.”

Inside, I fought the growing swell of inevitability. Diarmuid and I could never be anything. The longer I tried, the harder I tried, the harder my heart would smash when he finally broke it again.

I didn’t think my heart could take being shattered twice.

“I can’t do this anymore,” I said, fighting back tears. “I can’t be around you when everything screams at me that we are meant to be something. And you…you with your fucking cool logic and detached emotion. You’re like a zombie. You don’t feel anything.”

“I feel.” He grabbed my arm, causing my gaze to snap to his. “God dammit, Saoirse, I feel. Too much.”

“Then why don’t you—”

“Feeling something and choosing not to act on it for the greater good, that’s what being an adult is about. Being an adult is not about age, it’s about how you act.”

“Are you’re saying I’m not an adult?”

“No, I’m saying what we want and what we should do are two different things.”

“That’s shit.”

“That’s life.”

I shoved his hand off me, all the old cracks in my heart reappearing. “Leave me alone. You hurt me too much, Diarmuid. You hurt too fucking much.”

I shoved open his door and tumbled out onto the sidewalk. Running for the house, fumbling for my keys, I tried to get some distance from him. I heard him behind me, calling for me to stop.

Why did he have to keep chasing me? Why couldn’t he just leave me alone?

This time I couldn’t let him catch me. I would break if he did.

I tumbled in through the front door.

“Saoirse, stop.”

I did not. He followed me into the house, his footsteps crashing across the old wooden floors. If I could just get to my room, it had a lock inside the door. He grabbed me right as I turned the corner into the short corridor before the stairs.

His hands gripped me around my waist as he slammed me against the wall. His other hand gripped my chin, forcing me to look right into his tortured, burning eyes.

“You think I don’t feel? Dear God, Saoirse,” he sounded furious, “the things I want to do to you… It kills me that I’m not allowed to touch you the way I want. It fucking tears me apart to hold myself back from stripping you naked and worshipping every single fucking inch of you with my tongue. It’s like I’ve become a savage inside. A beast.”

I felt every single one of his words in every single one of my cells, ringing out like bells.

His fingers on my chin became soft, tracing my cheek, his eyes growing tender. “This is what you do to me. No one else. No one. Ever.”

I sucked in a breath and let out a moan. His words were like hands all over my body.

“Please,” I breathed,” touch me.”

NOW AVAILABLE!! Mr. Blackwell’s Bride by Sienna Blake ~ Sarah A’s Review

Drake

This marriage was supposed to be another business deal. My latest investment, a means to an end… I need an heir. Which means I want her belly swollen with my child before the year is out.

She was supposed to be my perfect little bride. Quiet. Uncomplicated. Unemotional.

I didn’t foresee the stunning firecracker who tumbled into my life and woke things in me I thought were long dead. I didn’t count on her turning my world upside down.

And I definitely didn’t plan on falling for this beauty.

Noriko

This marriage was supposed to be my sacrifice. A way to save my father, a means to an end… I need to remain childless. So I can exit the contract at the end of the year.

He was supposed to be a boring old man. Distant. Uncomplicated. Passionless.

I didn’t foresee the rude, arrogant and beautiful brute who made my body react like fire and smoke. I didn’t count on there being more underneath his gruff exterior.

And I’m definitely not supposed to fall in love with the beast.

This is a NEW story using old characters from the unpublished novel, Girl Wife Prisoner. This version has no Keir, no cheating and a Happily Ever After. Although this book is part of a series, it is a standalone novel.

Once again, Sienna Blake delivers an enthralling, demanding love story with Mr. Blackwell’s Bride. I found myself utterly wrapped-up in Drake and Noriko’s story from the second I opened the book until I read the final word. I never knew how much I loved arranged marriage books, but after reading this one and a handful of others over the last several months, I’m finding them to be a favorite literary theme.

Mr. Blackwell’s Bride is the second book in Sienna Blake’s Good Wife series. It is a complete stand-alone, with the exception of one essential but minor character, there is no crossover to the previous title in the series. These books are all predicated on the idea of mail order brides and the potential fallout of such an arrangement. They’re well done and fascinating.

I found Drake’s past to be fascinating, compelling. The inclusion of the story of his parents and their relationship served as such a cogent explanation of Drake’s behaviors when trying to love and protect Noriko. The very core of his being was so broken, neglected as it had been for his entire life, he truly had no understanding of what love meant or how to express it. His poor, broken heart and soul called to me, much as they appealed to Noriko. It was easy to see how she fell for him, as he just needed someone to know him, to love him, to accept him for who he was and not what he had.

I loved the mirroring Sienna Blake used in Mr. Blackwell’s Bride, in relation to Drake and Noriko’s relationship and his parents’. The comparison of Pierson Blackwell’s inattention and obsessive love for his wife and Drake Blackwell’s overwhelming need to protect and prove his love to his wife was well done. Both men, while taking different tacks to do it, succeeding at taking the love they were trying to show and pervert it into something beastly. It was how they dealt with the fallout of those actions that demonstrated just how starkly different Drake was from his father.

I have a few wishes for Mr. Blackwell’s Bride. The first is that there be more of an explanation as to why Drake decided to buy a wife. There is a little bit there, but I don’t feel like the few small details leading up to his decision felt like enough to explain his motivations. The second was a scene that seemed to be leading to an interesting storyline but then never followed up. Noriko goes into Drake’s suite and finds a locked door; the scene added nothing else to the book, and the locked door is never mentioned again. There is some information as to the room being his study, but the scene made it feel like this room was as much of a conundrum for Noriko as the west wing, so I’d have liked to have seen her find out about it.

Sienna Blake consistently writes books that fall right into my wheelhouse. They’re dark and heavy, have powerful statements to make about love and relationships, and they’re well-written. Every book I’ve of hers I’ve read has drawn me in from the first page and taken me on journeys both difficult and engaging. I love her character development and how she makes each of them multi-faceted and unique. I’ve especially found this Good Wife series intriguing and hope to see more stories in this world.

NOW LIVE ~ Beautiful Revenge by Sienna Blake ~ Sarah A’s Review

My name is…was Alena Ivanova.

Five years ago, I made a mistake. A big one. One that cost me the only man I will ever love.

Now in the lonely moors of north England, I live with my cold, cruel husband. My only friend is his daughter from a previous marriage. At least I didn’t starve to death during the bitter Russian winter.

When my husband arranges for a potential investor to stay with us, a mysterious self-made millionaire by the name of Mr. Wolf, imagine my shock when he walks in…

My name is…was Dimitri Volkov.

Until she broke me.

Five years I’ve worked for this moment.

Five years I’ve dreamed of revenge.

Bit by bit, she will watch her charmed life crumble to the ground.

Then when she needs me the most, when she is desperate, scared and alone like I was all those years ago…

I will destroy her.

Although this book is part of a series, it is a standalone novel.

This book was so near perfection, it had just the right mix of pain, angst, love, and healing.  I have a love/hate relationship with epilogues and this book is the perfect example of why.  I can appreciate it for what it was, but I think it belied the intense emotion of the rest of the book.

There were moments in Beautiful Revenge where the writing was pure perfection.  Where the prose was so beautifully illustrative I had to step back for a minute and just let myself revel in the elegance of those passages.  Those glimpses of genius are why I fell in love with Sienna Blake’s writing in Paper Dolls and why I will keep reading her books in the future.

I was particularly fond of the settings of this book, both the St. Petersburg winter in the past and the foggy moors of northern England, they were so well described I could feel the dark, wet, coldness of them while I was reading.  That made the experience of the bitter, cold revenge Dimitri was serving that much more poignant.

While the backdrop for this story was very dark, and I have no doubt Alena and Dimitri had more darkness in their childhoods than I’d care to think about, the story itself wasn’t as dark as I thought it might be.  While the characters were continually finding new ways to hurt each other, it felt more like they were protecting themselves from repeatedly experiencing the type pain that can only be dealt by the people they most cared for.

Dimitri and Alena both had lovely character arcs in this book.  Dimitri, in particular, grew and changed profoundly with his circumstances, it was lovely to see him come to terms with the things he believed and what had actually happened.  Alena’s arc was entirely different than Dimitri’s.  While she did change in small ways, and for a while the core of who she was suppressed, she mostly remained the same girl who believed in hope beyond all else.  Even when everything around her was shattering, she still found some glimmer of a better future guide her.

There were a few things I wished were touched on more, particularly the trauma that Alena experienced in the beginning of the book and more of Alena and Dimitri’s childhoods, but all in all I was very happy with this book.  I wish I had stopped reading before the epilogue, as I didn’t feel it added to the book but rather detracted from its poignancy.  I’ve never been an epilogue girl, though, as I like my books to have a little ambiguity in the end.

This was a beautiful book.  An elaborate drama based on hasty words, misunderstandings, and rash decisions.  It pulled on the kind of pain we all fear, that of losing the ones we most love.  In that way, it was relatable, which made the extreme circumstances the characters experienced much easier to understand because that type of hurt transcends money. The world constructed was beautiful and dark and I hope the rest of the books in this series follow with the same tone and setting.
