CREW by Tijan ~ Sarah A’s Review

To survive where I live, you have two options.
You can be a Normal—a cheerleader, jock, member of the debate team, or on the yearbook committee. You pretend everything is normal.

Or you can be crew.
You insult us? We hurt you.
You hurt us? We really hurt you.
And if you f*ck with us, we will end you.

My name is Bren.
I’m the only female in the Wolf Crew—the best, fiercest, and most dangerous crew there is—and we have a rule: There’s no falling in love.

Well… too late.

**Full-length novel. First book in a YA Series. This book is dark, violent, and not for the faint of heart.**
This is 100% a new series from TIJAN. All new characters in the Tijanverse and is intended for mature audiences only.

It took me a minute to get into this book. Once I did, though, I consumed it voraciously. When I finally finished I was glad that the first part of the book took so long to take off; there was a lot of information to digest and if it had been glossed over at all the end of the book wouldn’t have reached the intense climax it did. Tijan did a fabulous job of constructing this new world and the premise of crews and Normals in Crew, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for the rest of the series.

Crew is a VERY slow-burn romance, and for a little while, I wasn’t sure which direction Bren was going to head. There were two definite possibilities for her and I was on board with both of them. Tijan did a great job of constructing two compelling suitors in Cross and Race. As the story developed it was apparent Bren could only tear down her walls and be comfortable with one of those boys, and he was only able to be vulnerable with her, too. The book was never a love triangle but giving that little pull of the other man gave Crew an extra layer of interest.

The premise of Crew is completely new to me. Sure, I’ve read tons of gangs/motorcycle club/mafia/etc. books, but the crew and Normals idea was fascinating and original. I found myself engrossed in the system they set up and the way the crews interacted both with other crews and with Normals. I loved how loyal they were to one another and the dynamics within the group, especially that Bren – the only female in her crew – was viewed and treated as completely equal to her male counterparts. In truth, she may have been the most terrifying member of her group because of her affinity for violence.

Bren was a badass; there’s no other way to put it. She was independent, strong – mentally and physically, and fearless. Despite all that, there was still something profoundly broken about her, and when we found out about her past, it made her persona that much more impressive. Bren was intriguing and damaged, and I wanted nothing more, while I was reading than for her to find true love and happiness.

My only wish for this book would have been to get into Bren’s love interest’s head. He seemed just as compelling as Bren, and I would have loved to see what was going on in that beautiful head of his.

NOW AVAILABLE!! Ryan’s Bed by Tijan ~ Sarah A’s Review

I crawled into Ryan Jensen’s bed that first night by accident.

I barely knew him. I thought it was his sister’s bed—her room. It took seconds to realize my error, and I should’ve left…

I didn’t.
I didn’t jump out.
I didn’t get embarrassed.
I relaxed.
And that night, in that moment, it was the only thing I craved.

I asked to stay. He let me, and I slept.

The truth? I never wanted to leave his bed. If I could’ve stayed forever, I would have.
He became my sanctuary.

Because—four hours earlier—my twin sister killed herself.

They say every no reader ever reads the same book, we take our own life experiences, beliefs, and scars in and apply them to the story.  That sentiment is especially true for this book.  This book ripped open a part of my soul that I’d thought had healed a long time ago, the part that had been damaged when I lost my baby sister to suicide.  Tijan found that scar and poked and prodded at it in a way that was both painful and cathartic.  It’s an ache I’m sure I’ll be dealing with for some time, again.

Ryan’s Bed is a standalone novel, told in first-person perspective by Mackenzie.

I’m in awe of how real this book felt to me.  Grieving a loved one lost to suicide is a singular experience, and it was so well captured in Ryan’s Bed.  I related deeply to Mackenzie and how she slogged through her life after Willow died.  The rapid-fire emotions interspersed with periods of complete numbness were all too familiar.  It all spoke to me in a way that made me feel normal when she was feeling anything but.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the titular character and his relationship with Mackenzie; it was essential to Mackenzie making it through the grieving process.  Ryan was amazing; the way he knew what Mackenzie needed and was a pillar of strength for her when she had little else to lean on.  His own experiences informed his ability to support Mackenzie in the way she most needed it.  Their dynamic, born from an intense need for understanding, was the kind of connection that binds souls together for eternity.  I loved witnessing them help one another, not only through their grief but also navigating the pitfalls of high school politics.

Tijan is an author I keep planning to read, but not taking the time for.  I have several of her books on my kindle but had not opened one until Ryan’s Bed.  If this is typical of her writing, I have been missing out on some superb writing for far too long.  I was completely wrapped up in this book, both in the story and the writing itself.  I loved her handling of such a delicate subject matter.
