Whitney’s Four Star Review
Grant Carter makes me swoon. I fell in love with the cocky playboy the moment Blair pulled her gun on him in book one of the Rosemary Beach series. Ever since, his character has gotten to me and I’ve been wanting him to find his peace, home, love, whatever you want to call it. Basically, I want Grant to be just as happy as Rush.
If you read Grant and Harlow’s first book, I’m sure you have been anxiously waiting for One More Chance so you can see if they are able to work out their relationship woes. We pick up very close to where Take A Chance left off with Harlow in hiding after Grant’s meltdown when discovering her health condition.
I’m not going to rehash the story as you need to read for yourself but it has a very similar feel to book one as well as all of Abbi’s other books. There are some steamy sex scenes and I was quite impressed with Grant’s filthy mouth. He also got to play the role of protector and some of the sweet things that came of out of that boy’s mouth… I had to read them a few times so my heart would keep fluttering! Watching him learn to overcome his fear and love unconditionally was a beautiful experience.
Harlow remains her sweet self and I really admire the way she handles herself and Grant in this book. She really is his perfect match and I think the end will satisfy all of their fans.
As with the rest of the books in this series, we get little glimpses of the other characters though it does not take over the book. Since we already know the next will be Tripp’s, there is a subtle build up to his and Bethy’s story.
Harlow’s brother, Mase, makes several appearances and we also meet the charming and slightly wicked, Major (cousin of Mase). Do I smell a spin-off series set in Texas?
I think the biggest surprises for me were a chapter from Kiro and one from Nan. Honestly, I thought Kiro’s was unnecessary and added nothing to the book. But he was such a jerk during part of this story, I’m guessing Abbi wanted us to see where he was coming from.
I am a total Nan-hater. She’s evil personified. And while I still hate her, reading her chapter and some of her actions in this book did take that hate down a notch. I’m very curious to see what Abbi does with her character in the future.
My overall reaction to this book was positive since I adore these characters and this series. A couple of things kept me from giving this five stars though. I thought the writing was a bit redundant, even a tad choppy at times. It also seems like for the length of the book, not much actually happened. It needed a little extra punch. The best parts of the story were too short and surrounded by what I felt was too much filler material.
That being said, I still highly recommend this book. It really needs to be read in order with the other Rosemary Beach books and definitely after Take A Chance.
I declare Abbie the master of series writing. She takes a cast interesting characters and is able to weave their stories together without overwhelming the individual storyline. As long as she wants to keep writing about these folks, I’m going to keep reading. And I’m definitely keeping my fingers crossed for a Texas spin-off with not only Mase, but Major as well.
