NOW AVAILABLE!! Ford by Samantha Chase ~ Sarah A’s Review

There are three things Ford Garrison wants more than anything: to build, to report to no one, and the chance to live his life without the prying eyes of the good folks of Eagle’s Ridge. Having spent ten years in the Navy as part of their construction battalion, he was able to live out most of that dream. Two out three wasn’t bad, right? Now that he’s out of the service, things aren’t falling into place quite as easily as he hoped and he ends up back home with all eyes on him.

It wasn’t as if Callie had gone out of her way to end up in Ford’s path, but somehow that happened all on its own and the town gossips were having a field day! Could she help it that she was living in the house Ford had hoped to claim as his own or that the work on his grandmother’s ranch meant they were living not fifty-feet away from each other?

Ford was determined to come home, do a job to help his grandmother and leave. Callie James is a distraction and she represents everything he has spent years running away from. Now he’s at odds with his friends, his family and himself about where his home and future are going to be.

Could he walk away from Eagle’s Ridge a second time?

Super bummed that this is how the series ended. I was hoping for something more intense, and this just didn’t deliver the impactful ending I was hoping for. Ford was not a bad book, it was sweet and light, and Callie and Ford were endearing, it was just too light for me. This series has been up and down for me, and I was hoping the final book would be a high, so that expectation certainly influenced my rating.

Ford is the seventh and final book in the Seven Brides for Seven Soldiers series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but there are recurring characters, and the stories build on one another, so I would highly suggest reading the series in its entirety, in order. Ford, like all the books in this series, is told in dual third person POV, by Ford and Callie.

Ford was an interesting, frustrating character. He was so stuck on this idea of what he wanted to achieve, of what moving back to the town he was born in would be like, of how stifled he was by the opportunities afforded him by his family’s legacy, he never appreciated all the things he had going for him. Nor did he ever stop to consider the things he wanted from life had evolved from what they’d been when he was barely an adult. Witnessing his slow realization that e wasn’t the same and his needs and wants weren’t the same, was interesting – he fought was his heart and soul knew at every turn.

Callie fell a little flat for me. She didn’t have much of a growth arc and other than being one of the catalysts for Ford’s awakening (and obviously his love interest) she didn’t add much – regarding her own story line – to the book. I always hope for a strong female lead, and she just didn’t quite stand up to the challenge, she spends little time on page where she isn’t completely focused on Ford, and I hoped for more from her.

I wish that Callie had been a more dynamic character. I felt like the only parts of her we got to know where the pieces that would affect Ford and I’m sure there was so much more to her than that. I also would have loved to have seen a little more conflict in the climax; there was so much foreshadowing as to what did happen I felt like it was lackluster.

Samantha Chase is a new to me author. While I wasn’t deeply impressed with the story of Ford, the writing was good. If the cover copy of another book of hers were to pique my curiosity, I would give her another go to make a more well-informed opinion of her as an author.

“What are you working on out here? More wreaths?”

With a soft laugh, she pulled back and stepped out of his arms. “I am. Doing something like this is normally very soothing for me. When I got home, I came right out here rather than going into the cottage.”

“And did it help?”

Callie shook her head. “Unfortunately, it was so quiet out here, and I’ve already made four of these wreaths so I didn’t even have to think about what I was doing.”

“So your mind immediately went to your mom.”

She nodded. “Exactly.”

Stepping around her, Ford examined the wreath. It looked exactly like the one she had given him for his grandmother’s front door, but now he took the time to look at the details. It seemed so simple at first glance, but when he realized how much time went into weaving the lights and how tedious that could be, he was more than a little impressed. The vine was fragile, and he knew he’d more than likely crush some of it if he tried to do it himself.

Unable to help himself, he reached for one of Callie’s hands and studied it. It was small and delicate. Her fingers were slim and smooth. No wonder she could do work like this. He looked at her face and saw her studying him, her expression serious.

And Callie rarely looked serious or intense. Her features were always relaxed or smiling. This was…different.

He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her palm. “I was just noticing how intricate this work is,” he said gruffly. “I’m a little in awe of what you do.”

“Me? But…what you do is so much more—”

Ford placed a finger over her lips and shook his head. “I’m in awe of you,” he repeated, and slowly pulled her in close again.

Callie’s lips parted on a soft gasp as her eyes met his. And those beautiful eyes seemed to have a million questions in them, and Ford only had one answer.

He kissed her.

Slowly. Sweetly. He savored her as she melted against him. She hummed as her arms wrapped around him and in that instant, Ford knew what he had to do.

He lifted his head and looked down at her. Her lips were wet and her cheeks were flushed and she was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. So many nights over the last week they’d been like this, and right now, Ford knew he wanted more.

“Come home with me, Callie,” he murmured against her lips before resting his forehead against hers.

“Yes.”

Never had a single word sounded sweeter.

ADORED by Georgia Cates

My name is Judd Mathews and I have it all: money, good looks, success. Fans buy my music and scream my name. My life is a charmed one… until my world is turned onto its head by a girl. Scarlett Mathews.

A baby girl.

My newborn daughter.

Her mother is gone, and she has no one in this world but me. This delicate little girl couldn’t have been born to a more unsuitable father… until Leighton Mitchell opens my eyes and makes me see things differently.

Leighton is not my typical kind of woman. She does not get drunk on whiskey or chase country music stars for a chance at a one-night stand on a tour bus. She’s nurturing, wholesome, respectable… and easily the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. She loves my daughter. Adores her. And that makes it very easy to see that she belongs in Scarlett’s life. And mine.

GAH! I want so much more of this book!  Adored was phenomenal, particularly when you consider it’s a novella and all of those feelings it provoked were done in such a short time.  Judd and Leighton were wonderful, and baby Scarlett made my heart burst with love and affection.

Adored is a novella set in Kelly Elliot’s Wanted (Kindle) world.  It absolutely stands on its own; you do not need to have read the other books in the world to understand this one.  I’m sure having that knowledge would have given a little insight into some of the characters mentioned in the book, but not having that knowledge didn’t take anything away from the experience to me, as the whole book revolved around Leighton, Judd, and Scarlett.

While this book was short, it packed an emotional punch.  From the first page, when Ms. Cates shattered my mommy heart with her description of poor sick baby Scarlett in the NICU to the final pages full of hope and love, every word in the entire book was carefully chosen and arranged to elicit deep and powerful emotions from the reader.

I loved Judd, I loved Leighton, I loved Scarlett, I just loved this entire novella.  Leighton’s past destroyed my heart, she’d been through so much and carried on with such grace I admired her strength.  I felt like there was so much more of Judd under the surface that we weren’t able to explore, because of the brevity of the book, that I’m sure would have made his desire and care for Leighton – and Scarlett – even more poignant.

My only wish for this book is that it was longer, at least a full-length novel.  I loved the brief time we spent with Leighton, Judd, and Scarlett and wish we’d been able to have more of them.  I’m not saying the story wasn’t complete because it was, I just wish we could have had more story.  I want more of these characters!

Georgia Cates knows how to construct a story for maximum emotional impact.  Her writing always leaves me reeling – in the best way.  I continually return to her books because I know she’ll deliver a wonderful romance while still putting my heart through the proverbial wringer.

When I first started reading this book, the story felt so familiar I went through the books I’d read this year to see if I’d read something similar, it turned out I was just remembering Lotte’s storyline in the book this is a spin-off of.  I’d mentioned in my review of that book I found the secondary characters more compelling than the primaries, so I was excited to read this book.

The Sounds of Secrets isn’t technically part of a series, but there is a book in this same world that includes the characters of this book, The Weight of Life.  If you’re thinking of reading both, I’d strongly suggest reading Weight first, as the timeline is before this one and you get a glimpse of what Lotte had gone through to get to the point she is in this book.  Most of that story is recapped in The Sounds of Secrets, but her story was so powerful in the first book it’s worth reading just for it.

While I love the story that was included in this book, I felt like Lotte and Samson’s real story was just beginning as the story ended.  There were a few secondary characters whose storylines that seems as if they’d be important but were never seen after the initial build-up of the conflict they’d likely cause was established.  I also felt like the most important part of Lotte and Samson’s lives, perhaps the biggest struggles they’d ever face, were just about to happen and we’re left to wonder if they each made it through.  I can only hope that we are able to revisit them later in their life, either with a follow-up book of their own or in a book set in their world, so we can see if they triumphed over their demons or not.

For people who just love the love story, the romance, the fluff, this story is wonderful.  It’s angsty, and they have fantastic chemistry.  Lotte and Samson are able to find something in each other they don’t have with anyone else.  It was blatantly obvious they were two people whose souls were made for one another.  For people like me, who want to see the people they’re reading about be whole and happy and healed, it just lacked that element.  Sure, we knew they were taking steps to begin the process, but none of the actual process and that’s the part that feeds my soul.  I struggle to rate this book for precisely that reason; ultimately, however, it’s based on my wants and desires in a book, and it just didn’t quite give me the satisfaction I would have liked.

I was going to throw up from the nerves.
No, I told myself. No throwing up. Not when you’re expecting Sam to come into your room any second.
But the feeling was so strong. I popped a mint from my bedside table in my mouth, rolled it around my tongue a few times, but the urge was still there.
Oh, shit. Was this a mistake? Was inviting Sam into my room a big fat problem? I was leaving for America tomorrow.
The printed itinerary, neatly stacked on my chest of drawers laughed at me. What was I going to do? I couldn’t let Sam come up here.
My hands fisted in my hair as I berated myself for telling him to come. What was I thinking? I wasn’t some sexual nymph, skilled in the way Sam surely was. I wasn’t a virgin, but I hadn’t actually messed around with a bunch of guys.
I didn’t know what to do.
I walked to the door, pressed my palm flat to it. I’d lock it. Then he couldn’t come in. He’d walk away, and we’d forget this ever happened.
Look how well that happened the last time you kissed him, my memory taunted me. Three years later, and you’re still wondering ‘what if.’
There was no reasonable escape from this situation. And, if there was, there was no escape that would make me not obsess over the ‘what if.’
It’d be okay, I told myself. Of course it would. Sex was nothing, right?
But I didn’t even believe my own thoughts. My nerves battled with my own desire. I couldn’t process a single thing.
I ran my fingers over my eyebrows or, what was left of them that wasn’t colored in, at least. I’d pulled so many out in the days leading up to the trip, needing some control over this impending trip.
I trailed my fingers to the sides of my face, tugging on my earlobes to ground me, and then, in tandem, I pulled out a hair with each hand. The immediate relief was nearly as intoxicating as the alcohol I’d consume in how it numbed my fears.
It would be okay.
I took in a cleansing breath, looking around my room for anything potentially embarrassing.
The blinds were open, so I closed them, leaving my room in soft, muted grays aside from the yellow lamp that lit up my dressing table.
My hand was on the back of the lamp to turn it off when my door creaked open.
Sam stood in the threshold, nearly taking up the entire space.
I switched the light off.
It was only a few loud heartbeats before he said, “Turn it back on.”
I hesitated.
I couldn’t see him, but I heard the creak on the floor by the door. “Turn it on, Lotte.”
Swallowing hard, I did.
The room was illuminated again in soft light, casting shadows into the angles of Sam’s face—making him look exactly as he was: dangerous.

GIVEAWAY!! Scarred by Willow Winters ~ Sarah A’s Review

She made me a better man, but I still wasn’t good enough to keep her.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, with sleeve tattoos, ripped muscle and a cold-hearted stare, I am who I am.  The bad boy she knew to stay away from.
I knew we were never supposed to last.  But the way her lips tasted, the way her curves felt under my hands…  I couldn’t let go. I did everything I could to keep her.
I put on a ring on her finger and straightened out my life.  All for her.
I should’ve known better.
One mistake tore us apart and I don’t know what I can do to salvage what we once had.
I knew it wasn’t supposed to last, but if I could make her stay with me once…  I can do it again.
Watch me. I love my sweetheart; I’m not losing her again.

I love this book.  I hated this book.  I was irritated by this book.  I was sad and happy and all of the things while reading this book.  If I were rating purely on the depth and breadth of feeling a book evoked this would easily be five stars, as it is, I consider many other factors in my review, so it doesn’t quite reach that height of perfection for me.

Scarred is the fourth book in Willow Winters’ Sins and Secrets series and the second book in Kat & Evan’s duet.  While reading the first book of the duet, Damaged, is vital to the understanding of this book, reading the first two books of the series, is not.  I haven’t read those books, but after seeing the characters from Imperfect and Unforgiven in these books, I will be adding them to my TBR.

I found both Kat and Evan to be highly infuriating in both books of this duet.  While I couldn’t imagine being in either of their shoes, it seemed as if they were going out of their way to disappoint one another.  For people who love angst for the sake of angst, I’m sure it would have been a profoundly satisfying book; I’m not one of those people, so it just made me angry, because it all seemed so unnecessary.  I have no doubt knowing more of their story before Damaged would have made their actions more understandable, but as the story was it just felt excessive.

I honestly can’t tell you if I loved Kat and Evan or if I hated them.  They were very complex characters, full of flaws and pain.  They were well written and sympathetic characters.  While I did find their actions maddening at times, it was part of what made them feel so real.  When stress is high, and emotions are on edge, people react in nonsensical ways, and that was demonstrated perfectly with both Kat and Evan.  Ms. Winters did an excellent job of writing characters that elicited intense reactions from her readers.

I wish the timeline of this book were more structured.  I had a hard time knowing how much time had passed, while it didn’t always make a huge difference, there were times when knowing whether things were happening simultaneously or days or weeks later would have made a huge difference.  Since a lot of Kat’s anger was based on the time Evan was taking to tend to his situation, knowing how much time was elapsing between scenes would have made her anger and his frustration more pertinent.

Willow Winters has been on my radar for a long time, but I hadn’t made the time to read her work.  I have a feeling that, had I been reading her books all this time rather than just admiring her from afar, she would easily be one of my top authors.  Her prose is highly evocative, while still intimately relatable.  She was able to wring out more emotions over the course of a relatively short novel than some authors can in epic tomes.  I was highly impressed with her writing, even as I was having mixed emotions about her characters, and that proves to me she is an author to keep on my must-read list.

Evan

Damn me for what I’ve done,
Hate me for the lie.
Let the web weave and thread,
But don’t let what we have die.

I know it in my blood,
She’s mine to keep and hold.
I’ll stop fighting only once,
When I’m dead and cold.

The piles of dirt are getting larger. The metal shovels pierce the frozen soil. The sound cuts through my bones, one and then another and another.
It’s been constant as I stand here, helpless. I’ve never been colder, the wind and bitter snow beseiging my body, but I still don’t move.
I can’t take my eyes from the two graves.
The shovels spill the dirt, the piles mounting as my eyes drift to the tombstones.
The first my father, a man who died before his time. A death of tragedy.
And then to my wife’s. My love’s. Gone before her time. No one believes me. He put her there. James killed her.
My eyes pop open wide when I hear Kat whisper, “It’s all your fault.”

I wake up breathless, my heart pounding and I swear I can feel Kat’s hot breath on my neck even though I’m alone. My eyes dart around the room as I slowly lift my body into a sitting position on the bed.
Just a terror. The same as last night.
I’m quick to grab the video monitor for the security system from the nightstand and flick the button on to bring it to life. I had it installed after the break-in.
It’s only when I see Kat in our bed, that my heart starts to calm, and my heated skin seems to succumb to the chill of reality.
She’s okay.
I close my eyes and when I open them, it’s an image of her rolling over in bed. To my side. My fingers brush the glass where she is. I’ll be there soon. I’ll be with her and it’ll all be over. I won’t let her down.

Willow Winters is so happy to be a USA Today, Wall Street Journal and #1 Contemporary Bestselling Romance Author. She likes her action hot and her bad boys hotter. She certainly doesn’t hold back on either one in her writing!

Willow started writing after having her little girl, Evie, December 2015. All during her pregnancy with Evie she continued to read and she only wanted to read romance. She was reading a book a day — sometimes two.

In January 2016 Willow was staying up late with Evie and just thinking of all these stories. They came to her constantly so she finally sat down and just started writing. She always wanted to do it so she figured, why not? Today Willow cannot be happier for making that decision!

NOW AVAILABLE ~ Noah by Cristin Harber

Navy SEAL Noah Coleman knows how to do two things well: underwater demolition and hand-to-hand combat. So renewing his enlistment is a no-brainer until he receives a message about his cousin’s aggressive terminal cancer. A quick trip home confirms the worst, which means his niece Bella will become his responsibility.

Elementary school guidance counselor Teagan Shaw has known Bella since her son announced the two were best friends. The shy little girl is also on Teagan’s radar because of Bella’s early signs of gifted aptitude. But Teagan is more concerned about the military man thrust into the role of single parent.

While Noah adjusts to civilian life and Eagle’s Ridge, he and Teagan begin forging a friendship. But Teagan has a secret, a shadowy figure from her past who is intent on returning to torment her.

Noah drew in a slow breath, searching for the right words. But they didn’t come. Who knew what those were supposed to be when they’d gone through the heartache that had pitched them together.

“Teagan.” He pressed them forward until her back met the cedar wood wall. “I have no idea what I’m doing.”

Her chin tilted up, her lips parting with tiny breaths he wanted to capture with a kiss.

“And that’s foreign to me.” He towered over her, but he gave her enough space that she could roll away, plenty of room so he could take in more than just her face. But she smelled like flowers. Not sweet but strong and wild. Noah ducked his cheek to hers, brushing his lips close to her ear.

Her palms smoothed the front of his Henley. Not pushing away, not grabbing for more.

Together they were back at the same line as in the kitchen earlier. The one they’d both eased away from. But this time they toed the line, savoring and wondering, testing whether the Do Not Cross was a figment of their imagination, a simple cautionary tale that they’d concocted for no good reason, or if hormones and arousal were calling the shots.

Teagan slid her cheek against his mouth, and he stifled a groan.

“Neither do I,” she whispered. “No clue.”

He chuckled quietly, leaning his weight against her. “It’d be easier if one of us knew.”

Pressed between them, her fingernails scratched down his stomach, and he nuzzled his nose against her neck, breathing against her skin and memorizing how she smelled. Teagan’s soft murmurs made the hairs on the back of his neck stand, and he let his lips drift to her cheek.

“I’m going to kiss you on one condition,” he whispered.

“What’s that?” Teagan’s breathlessness made his heart pound harder.

He let the rush roll through him then teased her lips with his, not making contact, keeping them a breath apart. “That neither of us will be sorry.”

“Promise.” Teagan’s fingers tightened against his chest. “I won’t be.”

NOW AVAILABLE ~ Jack by Julia London ~ Sarah A’s Review

Fall in love with seven sexy and irresistible soldiers who find their courage and heart tested like never before in the battle for love! This multi-author collaborative series of contemporary romance novels is brought to you by bestselling authors Barbara Freethy, Roxanne St. Claire, Christie Ridgway, Lynn Raye Harris, Julia London, Cristin Harber and Samantha Chase. You won’t want to miss a single one!

Former Marine Jack Carter has left Afghanistan behind, but after a close encounter with a suicide bomber, he now battles a hidden enemy. Ashamed that he succumbs to heart-stopping panic attacks, he refuses to leave his house and makes excuses for failing to meet up with his best friends. He’s got the perfect set up—his job allows him to work from home, he hires out the dog walking and grocery shopping and he has subscribed to a meal delivery service that comes complete with a cook. Jack expected a lunch lady, but he gets Whitney. She’s bubbly, she’s way too chatty, and his dog loves her more than him. But he forgives her all of that because she’s sexy as hell and a bright spot in an otherwise lonely day.

Whitney Baldwin has been groomed to follow a long line of highly successful lawyers into an equally successful family law firm, but she’d rather bake a cake than read a tort. Her dream is to open her own patisserie. To say her father is disappointed in her career path is an understatement—if she can’t pull this off, she’ll have to head home with her tail between her legs. In a last bid to make her dream a reality Whitney accepts a job with Dinner Magic and lands an insanely handsome client in Jack Carter. His crazy good looks captivate her, but it’s something about his hyper-awareness of her combined with a vulnerability that is an irresistible recipe.

The smoldering attraction between Jack and Whitney quickly turns molten. But when he makes an important promise that he can’t keep, Whitney can’t fathom how this relationship is going to work. Will Jack ever be able to conquer his worst fears for true love?

Jack is another bright spot in this series.  It’s a tough call between this and Wyatt for the top book in the series, to this point.  They were completely different, yet both held things I love when reading about veterans.  Where Wyatt held the suspense, Jack’s story leaned more toward the emotional fallout that war veterans often have to deal with.

Jack is book five of the Seven Brides for Seven Soldiers series.  It holds the fewest links to the other books in the series, therefore the easiest to read as a standalone.  There are a few cameos from the other soldiers, but nothing that gives away any part of the previous books.  Jack is told in dual POV, in third person limited.

Jack may be my favorite of all the soldiers whose stories have been told.  He had a great storyline in the work he was doing, one that I think sheds light on an all too common problem, and his character arc was fabulous.  He’d had so much trauma to deal with, and I loved that he was actively working on it, even if he struggled with genuinely having a reason to work through his fears in the beginning.  His growth from the man who couldn’t walk through his hometown to the man he was by the end of the book was tremendous, in every sense of the word.

Whitney, while vitally important to Jack’s character arc, didn’t have much of one herself.  I’m surprisingly okay with it because she did find her own strength, though most of her journey to finding herself was completed before Jack started.  Her strength was an integral part of Jack’s growth, and in helping him, she also found the final push she needed to the what was best for herself.  I was delighted to see how Whitney and Jack truly made each other better people.

My only wish for this book would be the first and final few pages be a little more in keeping with the rest of the story.  It seemed the author struggled a little with exactly how to start Jack’s story and where was an appropriate place to end it.  Unlike the other books in this series, I would have liked to have seen this book end a chapter earlier than it did, as the final chapter didn’t really add anything to the story but felt like a hasty addition to show the characters enjoying their HEA.

Julia London is obviously a skilled writer, with the exceptions previously stated, I was wholly engrossed in Jack and Whitney’s story.  She made me care deeply about the characters, their struggles, and the people they were fighting for. Given a chance to check out some of her contemporary romances, I’d give them a shot.

Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband, daughter, and fur babies. When she’s not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach … which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies and fried pickles, and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm … or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren’t really happening.
