I’m going to be really honest for a minute and tell you I wasn’t the hugest fan of Sam when he tried to steal his brother’s girl.  No matter what had transpired between them, it was not okay.  I did love every other aspect of Sam though, he was truly one of the good ones, and he deserved so much more than what life had given him.  I was so happy when I found out Rebecca Shea was giving him his own story and hopefully happiness all his own.

At the end of Bound by Lies we knew there was a mysterious Kate in Sam’s life, but we had no insight into who she was or what she meant to him and I was DYING to meet this woman he cared for enough to introduce to his brother and the woman he’d been in love with.  I was not disappointed in her at all; she was perfect for Sam.  Strong, independent, and smart Kate was everything Sam deserved and more.

Betrayed by Lies wasn’t as high action as the two previous books and for that, my heart was very thankful.  I’m not sure how much more I could watch Sam go through, he’d already had more than his share of trouble throughout his life.  The high action intensity of Broken and Bound was replaced by deeply emotional moments and a scare that would be harrowing for anyone.  I found Betrayed by Lies to be a far more emotionally driven book and I love Rebecca for continuing the intensity of this series without sending my blood pressure through the roof at every page turn.

Rebecca Shea always makes me connect emotionally with her characters.  The way she writes them makes them feel real and flawed and like people I’d like to be friends with.  That’s what makes her books so wonderful to read, the care and concern for the characters that she fosters in her readers.  Each of her books leaves me feeling like I’ve spent time with a great friend, helping them find their Happy Ever After.

EXCERPT:

SAM

She shakes her head and laughs. “I don’t judge. It sounds to me like your therapy has helped you see what it is you need versus what you thought you wanted, and I’m so happy you’ve recovered from your injury and you’re able to return to work. So many agents aren’t as lucky as you.” There’s a spark of sadness in her eyes. A look that only the friends and family of those in law enforcement get when they think of those who aren’t as fortunate as I am.

I nod in agreement. “Which is why I was excited to take this opportunity here in L.A. with your brother. He’s giving me another chance to prove myself. California is a fresh start for me.” I smile at her and she smiles in return, and it’s soft, caring, and does things to me that I’m not sure I’m ready for.

“So what do you do?” I ask, turning the questions on her. I’m done spilling my garbage. I want to hear about her.

She drops her eyes from mine and takes another drink of wine before resting it on her thigh. “I’m an attorney. I do corporate law, mostly negotiating and reviewing contracts. It’s extremely boring to someone who’s not interested in legalese, but it keeps me busy and it pays well.” She shrugs.

“Do you ever end up in court?”

“No. Ironically, if there is ever litigation, we typically hire outside counsel. Sounds weird, doesn’t it?” She scrunches her nose up and smiles.

“Not really.” I shake my head. “I get why. You’re an expert at what you do. The attorneys you hire are experts in litigation. Everyone does what they do best.”

“Exactly.”

Our conversation slows, but it’s not uncomfortable in the silence. We both relax in the quiet and jut ‘be’. There’s something to be said for that level of comfort when you’re in the presence of someone else.

“So, when do you think you’ll be moving in?” she asks.

“I’m having some stuff delivered this weekend, so I hope Saturday is okay?” I raise my eyebrow at her, hoping it’s not an inconvenience.

She smiles. “Saturday is perfect.”

“I’m still waiting on a truck from Phoenix, so that’ll be sometime next week, but I’m ready to get out of that hotel. Speaking of that hotel, I really should get going. It’s getting late, and I didn’t mean to keep you up.” I stand up and she follows suit. We both carry our empty glass and beer bottle to the kitchen, and Kate swipes something off the center island.

“This is the key for the house.” She dangles the ring on her pointer finger. “You can have your alarm system installed anytime. If you need anything secured before then, I have a safe and an alarm on this house. You’re welcome to keep anything in here.”

“I appreciate that.” The soft tips of her fingers brush against my palm as she places the key in my hand.

“See you Saturday,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper.

“See you Saturday,” I return. For the first time in a long time, I have something to look forward to.

Release Blitz ~ Revelry by Kandi Steiner ~ Sarah A’s Review

Revelry, an all-new standalone from Kandi Steiner is now LIVE!!!

From the bestselling author of Weightless and A Love Letter to Whiskey:

Wren Ballard is trying to find herself.

She never expected to be divorced at twenty-seven, but now that the court date has passed, it’s official. The paperwork is final. Her feelings on it aren’t.

Spending the summer in a small mountain town outside Seattle is exactly what she needs. The peaceful scenery is a given, the cat with the croaky meow is a surprise, but the real kicker? A broody neighbor with nice arms, a strange reputation, and absolutely no interest in her.

Anderson Black is perfectly fine being lost.

He doesn’t care about the town’s new resident — he’s too busy fighting his own demons. But when he’s brought face to face with Wren, he can see her still-fresh wounds from a mile away. What he doesn’t see coming is his need to know who put them there — or his desperation to mend them.

Sometimes getting lost is the way to find yourself. Sometimes healing only adds a new scar. And sometimes the last place you expected to be is exactly where you find home.

Sometimes after I’ve read a book I’ll go back and read other’s reviews, partially to see what they thought and partially as a way to process my own feelings in relation to those thoughts.  Usually, I feel similar to how other readers did, but occasionally I feel like I was reading something different than they did.  That is how this book felt for me.  I really liked Revelry, it was fun and sweet and, in my opinion, fairly light.  When I’d read the synopsis, I had been expecting something much heavier, so that may be why it felt so light.

Both Wren and Anderson were carrying that baggage of their pasts around with them, but only Wren was looking for a place to stow it away.  Anderson carried his like a penance, he was certain he was mean to do nothing but flounder under the weight of the guilt he thrust upon himself.  Witnessing the ways they dealt with their own pasts, both alone and together was what made this book for me.  It was interesting to see them both, slowly come to the realization that they needed the support of the other to sift through the weight of their pasts.

While I had hoped for more darkness and heavy themes, I think that Wren and Anderson’s story was exactly what it needed to be.  I loved that we got little parts of other people’s stories interwoven in Revelry and how Wren and Anderson used those love stories to help them work through their own.  Some of the most emotional parts of the book really had nothing to do with Wren and Anderson, and that was really wonderful, to me.

If I had one wish for this book, it would be to have more about Anderson’s past.  I felt like I knew Wren’s story so well, but I wasn’t nearly as in touch with Anderson’s.  Sure, the broad strokes were there, but I felt it was sugar-coated.  As I look back, I see that only knowing the surface of his story was very much in keeping with his personality, but a girl can always wish.

My favorite part of the book was the end, not because of an HEA, not because of who does or does not get together, but because it felt real.  There were no promises of forever, no guarantees that anyone would always be happy, but everyone had exactly what they needed, what made them happiest, in that moment.  And I loved that, no one is ever promised more than the happiness of a single moment and the fact that Kandi Steiner wrote her book in that way felt special and unique.

I had just grabbed my oversized hat and slipped my sunglasses on when I spotted Anderson walking up the drive with a large trash bag slung over his shoulder. He wore a simple, black V-neck and distressed jeans, an outfit way too dark and hot for the heat. A light sheen of sweat gathered on his neck as he made his way toward my cabin, his eyes hidden behind all-black sunglasses.

“Change your mind?” I asked, not even fighting the grin on my face as I walked outside and leaned against the banister.

Anderson squinted up at me, his boots heavy as they hit each stair. “About?”

“Tubing?” I asked. That was why he was here, right?

“Oh.” He shook his head as he hit the top stair, shrugging the bag off his shoulders to hold it by the neck in one fist. “No, I have somewhere to be…” His voice trailed off, and even through the tinted shades of his glasses I felt his eyes on my chest. I’d strapped on my favorite boho print bathing suit and paired it with a dainty gold chain that wrapped around my neck once before dipping between my chest and crossing over my ribs.

He sniffed, holding the bag out toward me. “I just came to drop these off. My clothes. Well, the ones that could probably use a little TLC.”

My eyes lit up and I reached for the bag, but Anderson snatched it back, brows shooting up into his forehead.

“No frills, Wren.”

I threw my hands up in surrender. “I promise.”

He smirked, just slightly, and handed the bag over, tucking his hands in his front pockets.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come?” I asked, peering into the bag at my project before setting it just inside the cabin and locking the door behind me.

“I can’t,” he said, lips pressed together. He was tense, the muscles on his forearms tight as he glanced around at pretty much everything but me.

I opened my mouth to ask why but was cut off by the sound of a truck flying into my drive, tires sliding against the gravel.

Tucker was in the driver’s seat with Davie in the passenger. Sarah and Yvette sat in the back, laughing with their hands up as the truck skidded to a stop. They were both sprawled out on a pile of tubes, wearing bathing suit tops and tiny shorts.

All of their faces froze when they saw Anderson.

“Hey, you ready, Wren?” Tucker asked warily, his eyes moving from where Anderson stood in front of me, to me, and back again.

“Yeah, one sec!” I called back.

I turned to Anderson, but his eyes were hard on Tucker, jaw ticking under his skin. When he faced me once more, an anchor fell from my throat into the pit of my stomach, immobilizing me completely. Because even though I ‘d tried to convince myself I was wrong, I recognized the look in his eyes.

Possession.

And when his nose flared and he took one big step toward me, our chests brushing, his hand reaching out to rest almost imperceptibly on my hip, the anchor in my stomach exploded into flames, burning a desire so fierce I inhaled a toxic breath and didn’t let it go.

“Be careful, okay?” His eyes locked on mine just before he leaned in and swiftly kissed my cheek.

He turned on his heel and jogged down the stairs and past the truck. Sarah called his name, but he didn’t acknowledge her, just kept his gaze forward until he’d disappeared from view.

And then everyone looked at me.

Release Day Blitz ~ The Gravity of Us by Brittainy C. Cherry

Graham Russell and I weren’t made for one another.

I was driven by emotion; he was apathetic. I dreamed while he lived in nightmares. I cried when he had no tears to shed.

Despite his frozen heart and my readiness to run, we sometimes shared seconds. Seconds when our eyes locked and we saw each other’s secrets. Seconds when his lips tasted my fears, and I breathed in his pains. Seconds when we both imagined what it would be like to love one another.

Those seconds left us floating, but when reality knocked us sideways, gravity forced us to descend.

Graham Russell wasn’t a man who knew how to love, and I wasn’t a woman who knew how to either. Yet if I had the chance to fall again, I’d fall with him forever.

Even if we were destined to crash against solid ground.

Release Blitz ~ Dear Agony by Georgia Cates ~ Sarah A’s Review

dear-agony-ebook-coverDear Agony,

You’ve been my shadow, following me through childhood—filling my days and nights with terror and uncertainty. You cleverly disguised yourself as some form of pain or suffering as I grew into a young woman. We were unwavering companions … until I severed our ties.

I traded homelessness on the streets of New Orleans for a luxurious bed covered by the finest linens.

I traded dumpster diving for dinner in the finest restaurants.

I traded myself to a stranger—Bastien Pascal.

I have a good life within my platonic and mutually beneficial companionship with Bash.

He’s my friend. My mentor. My roommate.

Until everything changes.

I’m not supposed to get goosebumps when his hand brushes my skin.

I’m not supposed to be eager for his soothing touch following one of my nightmares.

I’m not supposed to think about what might happen if I reached out to him in the darkness.

Falling in love with him? Preposterous . . . unavoidable.

Agony, why are you back with a vengeance to rob me of this life I’ve come to love so dearly?

I’m finally happy. Don’t ruin this for me.

Always yours,

Rose

In this epic love story, Dear Agony forges a connection between an unlikely pair—a beautiful rose entwined in barbed wire and a shipwreck sinking into the darkest depths of the ocean. This agonizing romantic novel poses some gut-wrenching questions: What does a woman do when the man she loves is planning his own demise? And how far will she go to give him something to live for?

Dear Agony brings together two people who have very different pasts and futures that are completely contradictory.  Rose grew up in horrific conditions and experienced the worst types of things a person could know.  Bastien had an idyllic childhood and everything a child could need or want.  As adults, Rose is saved from the fate she’d long assumed was hers and her future became something she could never fathom while Bastien’s adulthood was littered with devastating losses and the future he’d always assumed he’d have, became something he knew he’d never be able experience.

Dear Agony pulled me in from the first page, I was desperate to know what Rose’s story was, what had happened to leave her performing on the streets in hopes of affording her next meal.  Vale and the secrecy surrounding her only added to the intrigue of Rose’s story.  There were so many layers of questions and secrets, I was dying to know everything.  One we started learning more about what had brought Rose and Bastien to the point where they entered their contractual relationship my heart was broken for both of them.  It was easy to see why they’d sought an agreement where the boundaries and rules were spelled out in precise language.

The plot of Dear Agony moved quickly, there were no moments where the story lagged or that I felt were boring.  I literally never wanted to put it down because I was so riveted to what was next for Rose and Bastien.  Sometimes, however, I did feel the pace of the book was detrimental, I would have loved to have seen more exploration of Rose becoming a more confident version of herself, more of her healing from her past.  There were a lot of situations and events that could have used more than the quick telling they had, I would have loved more of this story.  Particularly the end of the book, I felt like it wrapped up so quickly not all the things I wanted answers to got the answers they needed.

Dear Agony was a beautiful story, told with beautiful words and it will resonate with readers across the spectrum of romance readers.  It was sweet and sad and it touched on primal fears we all have, even if we refuse to admit them.  One of the things I most appreciated about Dear Agony was how the love between Rose and Bastien was a slow and steady build, not something that burned fast and bright, it was built on a firm base of mutual trust and respect.  I also loved that this story wasn’t built around the next sexual encounter, Georgia Cates did a wonderful job of building their relationship on the things that make a true love story actually last for the long haul and it was exactly what I would ask for when telling a love story.

I desperately hope that we are able to visit this world again.  I would love to see more of the Duets and Vale’s story seems so interesting, I have a deep desire to know what it is.  Another glance into the lives of Bastien and Rose wouldn’t hurt my feelings either.

Chapter 14

Bastien’s POV

Bringing Rose on at PPI has proven to be one of my best decisions ever. Not only is she the best assistant I could have hired, I get to have her near me all of the time. Win-win.

But not everyone is happy about Rose’s employment at the firm. Wendy is less than thrilled, but I’m proud of the way Rose handles herself. Kill her with kindness. That’s Rose’s MO where Wendy is concerned, yet she has this clever way of putting the woman in her place.

Rose is sitting on my office sofa. She’s in deep concentration reading the paperwork for PPI’s newest property so she doesn’t notice me looking over to steal glances at her.

That red dress fits her like a glove, showing just the right amount of leg. And those mile-high leopard-print heels . . . hot, hot, hot. I love having her at the office with me, but damn, she makes it hard to concentrate, especially when she’s working in my office instead of hers.

She looks up from the paperwork and opens her mouth to speak but stops when she catches me ogling her. She smiles and her brow wrinkles. “What?”

I shake my head. “I didn’t say anything.”

“I know. Why are you looking at me like that?”

I’m curious to hear how she perceives the way I watch her. “What kind of way am I looking at you?”

Her smile deepens and she glances away. “Never mind.”

“I want to know. How am I looking at you?”

She glances over at me and then down again. “Like you want something.”

The woman couldn’t be more right. I do want something. Her. “What do you think I want?”

She tilts her head to the side and grins as she nibbles her bottom lip. That lip I want to suck into my mouth and then bite and kiss at the same time because I can’t decide which I’d rather do.

“Tell me. What do you think I want?” I’m curious to see how far I can take this conversation. How much I can get her to admit about the way she interprets my gaze. She might be inexperienced, but surely she can see I want her.

Rose is so different from any other woman I’ve ever wanted. She’s delicate. Fragile. Innocent. She doesn’t know how to play the seduction game, yet she has seduced my heart, body, and soul.

I need her.

I want her.

I love her.

As are all of Katy Regnery’s Modern Fairytales, this is a retelling of a story we all know well, The Little Mermaid.  The beloved daughter to a single father, Laire knows she needs to experience the world beyond the one she knows, she a life bigger than the one she’s destined to live and a chance encounter gives her that opportunity.  She’s quickly involved with people and experiences she’d never known, but as we all know, that quickly changes when the evil witch steps in with her own agenda and takes something precious from Laire.  Given a little luck and a lot of heartache, we know the princess will find her happily ever after.

While I don’t think any of the Modern Fairytale stories will ever win the top spot away from Vixen and the Vet – I’m a sucker for a broken veteran – Don’t Speak definitely held its own amongst the other books in the series.  Ms. Regnery, once again, flawlessly weaves a tale we all know and love into something new and real, without losing the essence of what made the original story a classic fairytale.  I love how she is able to take characters we already know and gently reshape them into a more dynamic and relatable person.  They become flawed and normal, no longer untouchable princes and princesses living a world completely separate from us.

I really appreciated the way that Katy Regnery portrayed familial relationships in this book.  While the idea of parents not always supporting their children wholly is not a new concept, the way it was used in this book was completely original to me.  It was so interesting to see parents who truly thought they were doing the very best thing they could do, within the worlds they lived in, yet be so wrong about what their children actually needed.  It was also incredibly interesting to learn about a little microcosm of culture that still exists in the United States, but is a world apart from our own culture, and how it affected every aspect of Laire’s life.

There were a few moments in the book where the forward movement of the plot and characters stalled out, for me.  In these places, I skimmed a little to get the gist of what was going on in the scenes in order to have all the info I needed to continue reading.  I would have loved to have seen some of those scenes edited down, but I could also see why they were included and they did have a place in the novel.  There was only 10% of the book that I felt didn’t quite hold my interest as much as the rest of the story.

While I have only read Ms. Regnery’s Modern Fairytales, I do enjoy her writing.  I particularly appreciate that she doesn’t linger over the parts of the story that are not moving the couple she is writing about to their happily ever after; so many other authors seem to focus on their lives apart that there isn’t enough time to resolve their story together, but I’ve always felt a sense of peace in the end of Katy Regnery’s books.  There is something wonderful about the way she shows her readers just enough of the outside stories of her characters to give a sense of the things that made them into the people they are, without focusing so much on it that it detracts from the love story she’s actually telling.

It wasn’t until the beginning of this year that I was introduced to the wonder of KL Grayson’s writing.  When I found her books, I devoured them in a matter of days, I was addicted.  As soon as I heard about The Truth About Lennon I knew I’d do nearly anything to get my hands on it.  I was not disappointed, at all.

One of the things that I immediately loved about KL Grayson’s writing was how quickly her stories move.  It was the same with The Truth About Lennon.  From the minute the book started there was never a scene that lagged, never a place where I could put the book down for a while and not be antsy to get right back to Lennon and Noah.  There dynamic was fun and immediately compelling.  Each time they were together on the page I became wholly engrossed in how wonderfully they fit together.  It was only highlighted by the addition of someone pretty special in their own right.

I not only loved them together, I loved how each of them so obviously cared for the people in their lives; whether it was Lennon believing her mother would become more caring or how Noah continually did everything he could to support the people in crisis in his community.  Both Noah and Willow had such beautifully huge hearts, watching them fall for one another was positively sublime.  It hurt, deeply, to see them be hurt in the ways they were by the people who were supposed to love them.  They had both been dealt hands they didn’t deserve and I was ecstatic to see them begin to find the happiness they had been denied.

While Lennon and Noah were definitely my favorite people in this book, I also quite enjoyed the supporting characters, particularly Mikey and Charlotte.  They were kind and supportive, lent some moments of levity in heavy situations and rounded out the intensity of Lennon and Noah.  I would love to see their stories, especially Charlottes, as I had so many questions about why she seemed so disconnected in a town where everyone knew everyone else.

KL Grayson has my unwavering support in all of her future ventures.  Each of her books have pulled at my heartstrings for different reasons and they all have wildly compelling plots.  Her writing keeps me fully invested in the stories she is telling and I know the ending will leave me fulfilled.  I am very happy I found her and will continue to enjoy her stories for years to come, I hope.

Later that night, I’m crawling into bed, my sketch pad in hand, when my phone rings. Brenna’s name flashes across the screen.

Shit.

I don’t want to answer, because I already know we’ll end up in another fight. And I’m sick of fighting. I push the button to ignore the call.

I’ve enjoyed my short time here in Heaven, and it isn’t necessarily because of Nova and Noah—although they play a big part. But I’ve enjoyed the quieter life. I’ve enjoyed exploring the little shops in town, getting to know the friendly locals, and seeing the potential all around me. I’m doing what I want when I want without having to answer to anyone. No publicist watching my every move, and no looking over my shoulder everywhere I go, wondering if the paparazzi are hiding around the corner, just waiting for me to screw something up. And I haven’t screwed anything up. I’ve made some mighty fine decisions—both business and personal—since I’ve been here, if I do say so myself.

My phone vibrates again, but this time when I look down, I smile.

Noah: How is your night going?

Me: Better now that I’m talking to you.

I snuggle into my covers, waiting for him to respond.

Noah: I was going to call, but I didn’t want to wake you up.

Me: I’m in bed, but you didn’t wake me up.

Noah: Now we’re getting somewhere. Bed, huh? What are you wearing?

I can’t help it, I grin.

Me: Am I supposed to be wearing something?

Noah: Fuuuuuuck

Me: I can think of a few ways for you to come warm me up 😉

A few seconds later, my phone rings, and I pull it to my ear. “Hello?”

Noah growls. “You’re killing me.”

The sound of his voice is enough to send my body into overdrive. “In the best possible way though, right?” Because you’re killing me, too.

“You have no idea.”

I hear the sheets rustling, and I know he’s in bed. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to be there next to him.

“I think I have an idea.”

“Are you really naked?”

“Do you want me to be?”

“Damn,” he mumbles. “I would kill to be over there right now. You know that, don’t you? You know that if I didn’t have Nova here, I’d be there in a heartbeat.”

“I know.” My heart melts at his sweet words.

“I haven’t been inside of you in days.” His voice is low and raspy, his drawl much more prominent, something that happens when he’s turned on.

“Soon.”

“Really?” he admonishes. “Because I’m beginning to think it’ll never happen again.”

I chuckle. “You miss my body that much, huh?”

He’s silent for a few beats, and then he takes a deep breath and blows me away with his words.

“It’s more than your body, Lennon. It’s your scent and the way it wraps itself around me. It’s the way your eyes sparkle when you smile and the sound of your laughter throughout my house. And how you are with my daughter. You’re amazing with her. You’re gentle and kind and loving and… it’s everything. It’s you. I miss you.”

“Noah?”

“What?”

“Unlock your door.”

I end the call, and two seconds later, I’m hauling ass out the front door in my pajamas. When I hit the bottom step of his porch and find Noah half-naked in front of his open door, wearing nothing but a pair of low-slung sweats, I nearly lose my breath. I’m not sure if it’s the tattoos crawling up his arms, or the way he’s hanging on to the top of the door frame—it could even be his warm, brown eyes, which are eating me from top to bottom—but he looks different.

“What took you so long?” His slow, sexy grin pulls me in, and I walk straight into his open arms.

I pull my bottom lip between my teeth and smile. “I had to put clothes on.”

In an instant, Noah scoops me up, kicks the door shut, and is moving down his hall.

“Why the hell would you do something like that?”

GIVEAWAY & Release Blitz ~ War Poppy by Nicole Lynn ~ Sarah A’s Review

b3ffe-war2bpoppy2bebook2bcoverPoppy

Love and war. Two words that should have little association, but to me the two go hand in hand. Both are a tragedy. They rip you open and spit you out. The war killed my husband, Connor, shattered my will to live, and took my best friend. Brandon may not have physically died in that war, but his soul did. And now we’re left to pick up the wreckage. Expected to move on when all that is left is the ruins of a life we once had.

Brandon

War. It took everything from me, even myself. When you’re only able to exist, death seems like a blessing. Pain…a welcome distraction. I ran from everything associated with my past, and then she found me, fighting, drowning myself in whiskey, trying to forget. She reminds me of Connor, of what I’ve lost—what we’ve lost. In the midst of destruction, she’s a salvation I don’t deserve.

I shouldn’t love him.

I shouldn’t love her.

Love is a war we never should have fought.

ALP SarahAReview Owl

War Poppy was painful to read.  It hurt me bone deep.  It was difficult and perhaps a little controversial, but beyond all of that, it felt very real.  Not everything gets tied up in a pretty, pink bow in real life.  Not everyone gets whole and healed because someone else hopes they will.  Life is messy, love is messy and all of it tends toward the painful.  War Poppy portrayed the truth of living in a very authentic way.

Not all wars are fought on battlefields, tons of the are fought within ourselves and others are battled in homes where the enemies take up residence within the souls of the people we love.  This was the case for Brandon and Poppy.  Watching them both battle an enemy they couldn’t control, one who was literally changing the core parts of who Brandon was, was gut-wrenching.  Even more so than seeing them struggle with the ghost of the person who was both his best friend and her husband, the person who they both loved and lost in the most tragic of ways.

The message in War Poppy, beyond the effects of war and that type of loss on a person, was poignant, it told of the consequences of making choices based on the wants and needs of another instead of looking out for your own.  It illustrated how damaging not considering your own well-being can be, no matter how altruistic your intentions.  It was devastating to watch the fall-out of those types of decisions.

War Poppy was wonderfully written.  I found it to be a wildly compelling story and a departure from most romances.  As painful as the story was, it was wonderfully refreshing to see something out of the normal romance tropes, I loved reading something that felt so true to life.  I was won over by the words, the writing, the reality of this book and will definitely be reading more books by LP Lovell and Stevie J. Cole.

GIVEAWAY & Release Blitz ~ Mists of the Serengeti by Leylah Attar

mists-release-day-banner

mistsoftheserengeti_ecoverOnce in Africa, I kissed a king…

“And just like that, in an old red barn at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, I discovered the elusive magic I had only ever glimpsed between the pages of great love stories. It fluttered around me like a newly born butterfly and settled in a corner of my heart. I held my breath, afraid to exhale for fear it would slip out, never to be found again.”

When a bomb explodes in a mall in East Africa, its aftershocks send two strangers on a collision course that neither one sees coming.

Jack Warden, a divorced coffee farmer in Tanzania, loses his only daughter. An ocean away, in the English countryside, Rodel Emerson loses her only sibling.

Two ordinary people, bound by a tragic afternoon, set out to achieve the extraordinary, as they make three stops to rescue three children across the vast plains of the Serengeti—children who are worth more dead than alive.

But even if they beat the odds, another challenge looms at the end of the line. Can they survive yet another loss—this time of a love that’s bound to slip through their fingers, like the mists that dissipate in the light of the sun?

“Sometimes you come across a rainbow story—one that spans your heart. You might not be able to grasp it or hold on to it, but you can never be sorry for the color and magic it brought.”

“You missed a spot,” I said, pointing out the smudges on the glass.

“They’re not smudges,” he said. “They’re Lily’s fingerprints. She was eating chocolate that day. When we got to the mall, my phone rang. She came around to my side and put her hand here. Like this…” He hovered his fingertips over the marks. “One, two, three, four, five. See? Five perfect little chocolate prints. I haven’t washed them since. Every time I look out of the window, I see Lily there, holding her palm to the glass, making faces at me.”

Whenever Jack spoke of Lily, his entire profile softened. In those moments, his innately captivating presence was like a flame, kindled from within. For a second, I was completely jealous, because I had never lived in someone’s heart like that. And I wanted to. I wanted to make someone, someday, glow like that when they thought of me.

As Jack put the hose away, I realized that it wasn’t true. I didn’t want someone, someday. I wanted now. Today. And I wanted it with Jack.

No matter how many reasons I gave myself not to, I was falling for Jack Warden, more and more, with each passing day.

I have so, so many thoughts and feelings about STAY.  I’m glad to have experienced it, devastated that it’s over, and exhausted from the experience. This book was deeply personal for me. Not because of Ash and Willow, it was Summer that reached into my soul. She was the embodiment of my baby sister. She too, burned bright and fast, spending her life searching for that illusive happiness. The bullet points of Summer’s life lined up so closely to Hannah’s it made me hurt for everyone involved. I could feel Willow’s pain because it was my own. I am always in awe of AL Jackson’s writing but this book just touched all of the darkest parts of my heart, mind, and soul like others have never done. I’m thankful she entrusted the world with this magical piece of art, I will long treasure the experience it was.

They say that each reader brings their own experiences into a book and for that reason, no one ever experiences the same story.  STAY exemplifies that adage, for me.  While others fell for Ash and Willow, my love for this book is rooted in a character who wasn’t present in many of the pages but without whom the book could not exist.  She was the most vibrant and wonderful part of the book, as far as I was concerned.  It was she, however, who colored every thought, every feeling, every moment of both Ash and Willow’s lives.  She was the constant pulling them together and tearing them apart.

There are certain books that slowly and deliberately steal pieces of your heart, it’s done so carefully you don’t know you’re completely in love with the words, the characters, the author until you’re finished and you have to leave those pages and move on.  This was STAY for me.  The dark parts of Ash that he kept hidden stole pieces.  The light and hope that was Willow stole more pieces.  Summer and her overwhelming sadness stole the rest.  I am completely, irrevocably in love with AL Jackson and this book.  I know I will spend the next days thinking of STAY and wishing I could go back and relive each moment in the pages like I’d never been through them before.

Release Blitz ~ A Harmless Little Plan by Meli Raine ~ Sarah A’s Review

rb-banner-plan

3-a-harmless-little-plan-ebook-coverTurns out there was a second video from that awful night four years ago. Mine wasn’t the only tape.

Too bad mine wasn’t the worst.

Drew can’t protect me no matter how hard he tries, but the roles are flipped now. I have to help him, but I’m not wired that way. Not anymore. That one night changed me more than anyone knows.

More than anyone could predict.

Three men think they’re above the law. They’re right.

But I’m willing to go beneath the law to make sure they never harm anyone else. Their threats don’t scare me.

When you have nothing left to lose because someone took it all away, you create the most dangerous creature imaginable.

Me.

Game over.

A Harmless Little Plan is the final book in this political thriller/romantic suspense trilogy by USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine.

ALP SarahAReview Owl

This series kept me on tenterhook for nearly its entirety.  I was just hoping for a little more resolution in this final book.

A Harmless Little Plan, especially the first 75% or so was everything I could have hoped for.  It was the ending that left me unfulfilled.  It just didn’t give me all of the answers I was looking for.  Yes, there were reasons we didn’t get some of the answers I wanted and I mostly accept that but there were other things that seemed glossed over.  Lines that were partially answered then left unresolved.  For me, it just didn’t fit with the rest of the series.

Up until that last 25% percent of the final book of this trilogy I was completely in awe of Meli Raine.  She seemed uninfluenced by what the romance community has come to expect from a romance novel.  It was only in that last small fraction that she seemed to cave to those whimsies.  I wish I could have got that same quality of storytelling to end the series.

Think about Drew, I tell myself. Remember his arms, how he smells. Look around the bathroom. There’s a can of shaving cream. A bar of used soap. A toothbrush holder with a crooked toothbrush hanging from it. The sink is messy, with small speckles on it. An electric razor is next to the shaving cream.

Huh. Wonder why he shaves both ways.

As I breathe my way to a relaxed state, I let myself indulge in imagining what it would have been like to become domestic with Drew. To come here and hang out. Spend the night. Slowly work our way toward a long-term relationship. Mom and Daddy would never put up with my living with him, but eventually, we’d get married.

My ring finger on my left-hand tingles at the thought.

Married.

Mrs. Andrew Foster.

Years ago, I had these fantasies. I lived a life before the attacks where I could be like any other woman, dreaming about the future. We even talked, tentatively, about what life would be like after Drew graduated from West Point.

We were just about there.

And then it was all taken from us.
