GIVEAWAY!! Dignity by Jay Crownover ~ Excerpt & Sarah A’s Review

Looks can be deceiving.

I knew that most people took one look at the ink and the impossibly big and strong body it covered and decided I was a brawler…a bruiser…a beast. However, I was hardwired to be a thinker, not a fighter.

I should have chosen to use my brain and talents to be one of the good guys, a hero, a man with dignity and worth.

I turned my back on dignity and sold my soul to the highest bidder, deciding to dance with the devil, instead.

I couldn’t figure out how to help myself, so there was zero chance I knew how to save someone else.

That someone else was Noe Lee. She was the unkempt, unruly thief who was just as smart as I was and twice as street savvy. She was annoyingly adorable beneath the dirt and grime, and she was in trouble. In way over her head, I told myself it wasn’t my job to keep her from drowning. In the Point, it was sink or swim, and I wasn’t the designated lifeguard on duty.

I shut the door in her face, but now she’s gone…vanished…disappeared without a trace. It took less than a second for me to realize that I wanted her back.

When a woman comes along that melts all the frozen, hard things you’re made of; you’ll do anything you have to, to bring her home.

What you see is not always what you get…and with a man like me, what you get is more than anyone ever bargained for.

I wish I had taken the time to refresh myself and read Honor before taking on Dignity.  It wasn’t that I was able to pick up the book and understand exactly what was going on, it was that there were small details that were referred back to that I couldn’t recall.  Dignity can be read as a stand-alone, should you want to, but I would recommend being up to date on all of the Welcome to the Point and Breaking Point novels, as there are recurring characters in all of the novels.

I am consistently impressed by the way Jay Crownover approaches potentially sensitive subjects.  The way she juxtaposed the corrupt officials against the inherent goodness of the people who genuinely love The Point – even when they were not wholly lawful – was compelling.  It was also handled in a way that made it feel like even in the darkest, most hopeless situations have a solution.

Snowden Stark and Noe (pronounced ‘NO’) Lee were fascinating together.  I loved the way they pushed each other, both intellectually – there is a reason they say the brain is the most important sex organ – and emotionally.  The tragic circumstances they’d both experienced in relation to their families may have been vastly different, but they both dealt with it similarly.  Watching them begin to peel back the layers of the things they’d long buried within themselves, in order to develop something more significant than either of them had ever hoped for, was engrossing.

The plot of Dignity was intense and enthralling.  I appreciate how Jay Crownover relates her characters to one another and uses their past pains and traumas to their current struggles.  It’s also amazing how she allows those experiences to inform how they relate to the people they encounter and help them to recover from their own pain.  Watching Now and Stark battle against the worst humanity has to offer while also battling their own demons made me happy, for them and for the people who were unable to fight for themselves.

Jay Crownover has been a go-to author for me for a long time.  Each of her characters feels fresh, while still having an inherent strength that feels uniquely Jay.  She can take the darkest corners of the earth, the most unlikable characters and turn them into places and people that speak to your heart in soul in a way you never see coming.  Dignity was utterly in keeping with her style; it’s all hard edges and interesting dynamics.  I can not wait to see what Ms. Crownover has in store for us in the next book in this series, Respect, due out summer 2018.

I was dragging ass when I took the stairs up to Booker’s unit. Typically, I could run up the three flights and not even get winded, but I was running on fumes and the last traces of adrenaline. My brain was fuzzy, and my normally sharp thoughts felt scattered and unruly. The past and the present were at war in my mind, and the battle for which one made me feel worse was raging.

I made my way through the quiet loft listening for any sound that would indicate Noe was up and moving around. When I got closer to the bedroom, I heard the shower running and swear words chasing the steam out of the open door. It was going to be painful for a while when the water sluiced over her wounds. The thought had me squeezing my eyes closed and clenching my hands into fists. Just because tough things didn’t break didn’t mean they couldn’t be damaged, dented, and scratched. The fact Noe was currently suffering so much wear and tear because of me scraped across my skin and dug into my belly like sharp knives.

I was turning to walk out of the room so she could finish in peace when the running water went silent and her swearing ramped up a notch. I heard her banging around in the bathroom and then she yelled, “Booker, I need a towel! I’m dripping all over your floor.”

I opened my mouth to tell her Booker was gone and that I would go find her one. I didn’t need her poking through his stuff and running across a submachine gun or a rocket launcher. My brain was ping-ponging between annoyance that she’d called for Booker instead of me and the unrelenting image of her, naked, wet, and dripping onto the tile. I wasn’t a guy prone to fantasy, but damn if I didn’t get all kinds of caught up in the thought of her pretty olive skin glistening with moisture from head to toe. I needed to get away from her. I needed space so I could find a way to wrap armor back around all the soft parts of me she exposed.

I was shaking my head to marshal my thoughts back in order when I heard her swear again. Suddenly, like I conjured her out of a dream, Noe was standing in the pocket doorway of the bathroom wearing nothing more than a scowl of irritation and shimmery, shiny water droplets. Her midnight-colored eyebrows shot up to her hairline, and a bright pink flush stained the top of her chest and crawled up her neck into her face. She didn’t lift her hands to cover herself. She stood as still as I was, not moving at all under my furious and hungry gaze.

I wanted to be polite and look away. I told myself it was rude to stare and that the last thing she needed was some guy she barely knew gawking at her like she was a priceless work of art on a museum wall. I berated myself for this invasion of privacy but none of the lecturing or preaching did any good. The only way I could have torn my eyes off that petite frame, with it’s perfectly perky breasts and slightly rounded hips, was if someone slapped them out of my head. I couldn’t blink. I was scared to breathe. I felt like if I moved at all she would bolt like a startled deer, and I needed another second, another minute, another hour, to memorize every single part of her.

She was small, but all the parts added up to perfection. Seeing her like this, stripped bare with nothing to hide behind, I couldn’t believe I’d ever been stupid enough think she was a boy. Everything about her was delicate, feminine, and soft. The hollow of her neck, the elegant curve of her shoulders, the flare of her hips and the fullness of her ass. Her legs weren’t long, but they were toned and shapely. She was the very definition of good things coming in small packages and all I wanted to do was wrap her up and put her on a shelf that was too high and too hard to reach for anyone but me.

Choking on possession and a surge of lust unlike anything I’d ever felt, I belatedly turned my back on her and muttered thickly, “I used all the towels in there last night when I cleaned you up. I’ll go find where Booker keeps the extras.”

She moved. I felt it. The current that ran between us pulsed and throbbed with something hot. I heard her bare feet on the carpet and it took every ounce of willpower I possessed to keep my feet planted and my back turned. She was naked in a room with a very big bed and I was a man who never had such a visceral reaction to anyone…ever. If I had a switch, Noe Lee was the only person who had ever come along and flipped it. I was the actual definition of turned on when I had been off for most of my life.

NOW LIVE!! Imperfect Love Kindle World by Kendall Ryan & Guests

Not Her – Julia Bright

Jason Delany Baxter-Scott…the fifth. What a terrible name to have to live up to. There is no question in his mind that he’ll never live up to his parents’ expectations. Baxter, as he is known to his friends, is trying, but when his fiancée dumps him, he has less than an hour to find someone to stand in to meet his demanding mother and father. He knew Heather in college, and she recently sent a note, saying she’d moved to New York. It was a dick move, but he invited her for drinks, only to introduce her to his parents as his fiancée.

Heather is still the same free-spirited woman who challenged him to be his own man in California. She’s nothing like the women his parents’ think he should marry, and that makes her forbidden fruit. He admires her for standing up for herself and never backing down. She’s got spunk and a whole lot more that turns him on and leaves him wanting.

Heather Burke doesn’t put up with BS. She’s worked hard to develop a clothing line that sells in her own high-end boutiques. Her style may be quirky, but she’s business savvy and worldly. When Baxter contacts her, she’s in for a drink or two, but when she arrives, and his parents think she’s the fiancée, the night is turned on its end. Baxter told her story after story about how horrible his parents were so she can’t abandon him, but going along in this ruse may just be the end of her.

Back in California, she lost her heart to Baxter, and this fake fiancée stuff may just take her mind too. When he’s not bowing to his parents’ pressure, Baxter is a decent guy, someone she could see herself with for the rest of her life. She just has to convince Baxter he doesn’t need their approval to be a good man.

When the stakes get high, they both are challenged. Can Heather walk away from Baxter, or will she stay and teach him to fight for himself?

Liar By Stephanie St. Klaire

Fake it until you make it. That was the mantra Cori Dash chanted as she chased a big city dream. The more you tell people you’re on top of the world, the more they believe it – just like they believed the embellished image she sold them with her knock off designer facade. It wasn’t lying if the truth stood somewhere in the middle – and she didn’t get caught.

Dominic Blackthorne owned half of that big city…and a reputation. Rather than dispel rumors or show the world the real Nick, he let his own fake image run free. Until Cori Dash – the only person who told him exactly how it was, even if it stung.

When Cori is faced with her ex-fiance, now engaged to her ex-best friend, it’s game on. In her boldest move yet, she concocts her biggest lie to date by introducing the first handsome stranger that walks by as her new fiancé. Happy to play the part, Nick is already planning the fake wedding of her dreams.

You know what they say about lying – the truth always comes out – and it hurts. Especially when Cori finds out she isn’t the biggest Liar in this game, and she’s been out played.

Operation Girl Next Door by Casey Hagen

Trevor Myers knows how to make it big in the business world: a charming smile, connections, and balls-to-the-wall fearlessness. The master of all three, a partnership with his firm is all but in the bag. That is, until his boss dangles it over him, and three coworkers, like a prize on a game show. Trevor will do whatever it takes to lock in what is rightfully his, even if it means calling in a doozy of a favor from his best friend.

Piper Bradley is on the precipice of making a career-altering decision to expand her dancewear line. Agonizing over the decision, Piper decides to take a trip to clear her head, only to have her brother hamper her plans when he calls her to return a favor for his best friend…Trevor Myers. Owing Trevor for escorting her to her senior prom years earlier, she reluctantly agrees to play his girlfriend for the weekend.

Trevor expects a grownup version of the shy girl toting a sketchpad, not this drop-dead, gorgeous woman who leaves him tongue tied.

Piper decides it’s time to exorcise her long-simmering feelings, once and for all.

Trevor fights the battle waged between his playboy lifestyle and the elemental pull of the girl next door.

Pillow Talk – Brittany Holland

They say you can’t buy love.

Falling for him was never part of the arrangement.

Neither was sharing his bed.

But I did both.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Mira Gibson

American heartthrob and notorious bad boy, Zach Canning has gone and made the error of all Hollywood errors. No, it wasn’t sticking his foot in his mouth during an interview again, banging an almost underage fan, or even disappearing on another cocaine-and-booze addled bender. It was far, far worse, and now his TV show renewal contract hinges upon his ability to convince his fan base, the Christian Network, and America at large that he’s just as wholesome as his #Blessed character.

Jesus Christ, how?

When Zach’s publicist approaches her with the most unbelievable proposition—to dispel rumors surrounding the famous actor one sexy date at a time—Abby is more than intrigued. She’s been a fan of his show and has watched religiously… admittedly, a guilty pleasure.

What other guilty pleasures could he give her???

But the secret contract she’s presented with not only states she must pose as his girlfriend in the public eye while the paparazzi follow their every move. She must also elope with Zach in two weeks! Non-negotiable, legally binding, with a corresponding gag-order in place and no guarantee of true love…

Can she go through with it? Will she choose a thrill ride instead of love? What if she could have both with the same man?

Stained glass artist Callie Davis is in desperate need of a vacation. Burnt out and on the edge of a nervous breakdown, she’s fleeing the pressures of her career and is taking refuge on Massachusetts’ tiny Carter Island. Callie yearns for long, lazy days and pretty walks on the beach—blessed solitude and an escape from the complications of her life. Then she bumps into gorgeous Nate Carter and everything changes.

Sheriff Nathan Carter couldn’t be happier now that the height of the summer season has finally come and gone. After four endless months, tourists have packed their bags and headed for the mainland. The quiet days of autumn are about to befall the town—the way Nate and his fellow Sandersonians like it best.

But nothing ends up quite the way Nate expects when he meets the beautiful blonde with the big blue eyes. Callie’s pretty smiles hide secrets—deep, dark mysteries that could cost them both their lives if they continue digging into the past and cross a killer’s path.

They started walking again, and a wave rushed up, washing over their feet.

Callie gasped and stepped farther away. “Oh, my God, that’s cold.”

Like ice water, but Nate shrugged. “It’s not so bad.”

She looked at him as if he were crazy. “It’s freezing.”

“It usually is for most mainlanders—blood’s too thin.”

She stopped in her tracks and pushed her sunglasses onto her head, rewarding him with a look at her big baby blues. “Are you suggesting that mainlanders are wimps?”

“I’m not trying to hurt your feelings or anything…” He shrugged again, struggling not to smile. “But you’re the one who can’t get your feet wet.”

She splashed her foot in the surf as the next wave started receding.

He chuckled, thrilled that Callie seemed willing to play. “That’s not showing me much.”

She walked closer to the water, adding both feet this time.

He came up next to her and took her hand, pulling her toward the actual Atlantic. “In up to your knees for three good waves.”

She hesitated.

He sent her a wry smile. “See? Wimp.”

She grinned. “All right. Three good waves.”

“You’re on.” He walked out with her, clenching his jaw against the bone-numbing cold, fighting the urge to swear.

She gasped, then squealed as the first wave rushed past their calves.

“We’ll count that as one,” he yelled over the pounding water, still walking farther out with her. “And here comes the next.” He braced himself, gripping her hand tighter as the current came in with a powerful rush and nailed them thigh-level.

Callie screamed as she laughed and made a move to head to shore.

He laughed too, pulling her back and bringing her closer to him. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“It’s too cold,” she screeched.

“I don’t think so, mainlander.” He hooked his arm around her midsection and held her in front of him as the next wave came in and sent a steamroll of water crashing into their waists.

She screamed again, gripping his forearm as if her life depended on it, and threw her head back on a long peel of laughter.

He let loose his own deep belly laugh, loving the way she sounded—that he could smell her flowery shampoo as she rested her body against his. That they were having fun.

“Nate,” she fought to say. “Let’s get out of here.”

He took her hand and they ran as best they could toward shore.

She stumbled as they made their way to the ankle-deep water. “Cramp. My toes are cramping.”

He moved to take her weight and carried her more than walked with her to the loose, warm sand free from the surf. “Bend your foot forward until it passes,” he said, slightly out of breath.

She did as he told her.

“Better?”

She nodded her head as her teeth chattered and goosebumps puckered her skin.

“Works every time.”

“Your toes cramp too?”

“Hell, yeah. That water’s like an ice bath. I never go in without a wetsuit.”

Her eyes went huge as she gaped at him. “What are you talking about? What happened to your thick, native Sandersonian blood?”

He chuckled, enjoying the gorgeous woman who’d forgotten she was shy. “My blood’s probably right on par with yours. I just wanted to get you out there.”

She laughed and swatted at him. “That’s a dirty trick.”

“Maybe.” It concerned him a little that her lips were turning a light shade of blue. He rubbed his hands up and down her soft, smooth arms. “Come up to the house. I’ll get you a towel and you can warm up by the fire and have a beer.”

She looked over her shoulder toward the noise and small crowd of people. “That sounds fun, but I should probably head home.”

He struggled with a wave of disappointment. “Are you sure?”

She nodded, holding his gaze as they stood inches apart. “Maybe next time.”

“Next time,” he repeated, knowing the moment they’d shared was over. He gave her a final rub and stepped back. “It’s a couple miles to the cottage. You’re good to get there?”

“Yeah. Definitely.” She bounced gently from foot to foot in her attempt to keep warm. “Thanks for the walk. I can now say I’ve partaken in my very own version of a polar plunge.”

He grinned. “I think you have to jump in during the winter for it to count as a polar plunge.”

A look of horror filled her eyes. “That’s never happening.”

He chuckled.

She smiled again. “Thanks, Nate.”

He nodded. “I’m sure I’ll see you around town.”

“Okay.” She walked backward for a few steps, waved, then turned and ran. She swooped down for her shoes and headed toward one of the bike racks several hundred feet in the distance.

He started back to the house in no hurry to get there, even though his shorts were soggy and he was freezing his ass off. His teeth started chattering and he smiled. As far as he was concerned, every minute with Callie was worth his current discomfort now.

Because in the end…

Revenge is sweeter than love.

I was almost completely blown away by Bedroom Hymns.  I loved every second of what I read, I just   The intense taboo was done quite well.  However, I did feel there were several storylines that were started and never fleshed out.

Bedroom Hymns passed all boundaries of polite society.  Morgan Reeves set the tone of the book from the first sentence and continued to build one that darkness throughout the entirety of the book.  Even the lighter moments, the scenes where love and understanding were the pinnacle, were shrouded in immorality.  There nary a scene that wasn’t full of wickedness and foreboding.

The character development in this book was a little lacking, for me.  Beyond knowing Sophia’s immediate motivations, it was hard to tell what drove any of the characters.  Perhaps that mystery was what Ms. Reeves was going for in this novel, something more plot than character driven, but I prefer to have a better understanding of the characters about whom I’m reading.  When I was finished I realized that I had no idea how any of the characters would have reacted outside of the intense situation they lived in during the book.

While I completely understood that this book and everything in it was designed to be secretive and full of misdirection, some of the storylines felt either unnecessary or unfinished.  I wish that I had more closure regarding most of the secondary storylines in part two.  I can appreciate what was included for how it was used to manipulate the antagonist, yet I’d have loved to have seen those threads used more effectively.  I felt as if huge parts of Sophia’s persona were forgotten entirely and discarded by the time we reached the end of the book.

Overall, I was quite impressed with Morgan Reeves writing.  She drew me into this world thoroughly and made me care about characters I knew quite little about.  This story had the potential to blow me away completely, yet ultimately left me somewhat unsatisfied.  Had the character development been a little deeper and those few storylines that seemed to have been forgotten fleshed out this could have easily been one of the best taboo books I’ve read in ages.

NOW LIVE!! Show Me the Way by AL Jackson ~ Sarah A’s Review

The first sexy, captivating, stand-alone novel in the brand-new FIGHT FOR ME series from NYT & USA Today Bestselling Author A.L. Jackson . . .

Rex Gunner. As bitter as he is beautiful.

The owner of the largest construction company in Gingham Lakes has been burned one too many times. His wife leaving him to raise their daughter was the last blow this single dad could take. The only woman he’ll let into his heart is his little girl.

Rynna Dayne. As vulnerable as she is tempting.

She ran from Gingham Lakes when she was seventeen. She swore to herself she would never return. Then her grandmother passed away and left her the deed to the diner that she once loved.

When Rex meets his new neighbor, he knows he’s in trouble.

She’s gorgeous and sweet and everything he can’t trust.

Until she becomes the one thing he can’t resist.

One kiss sends them tumbling toward ecstasy.

But in a town this size, pasts are bound to collide. Caught in a web of lies, betrayal, and disloyalty, Rex must make a choice.

Will he hide behind his walls or will he take the chance . . .

Show Me the Way was a mixed bag, for me.  There were moments that were wonderful and deeply moving, but there were also things I really struggled with.  It took some time for me to become truly invested in Rex and Rynna’s story and a big part of the credit for my concern for them is due to Frankie.  Who doesn’t love a spitfire of a little girl?

It took me a minute to connect with these characters.  They both played everything so close to the vest, in terms of their pasts and the parts of them that had been damaged, that it was hard to understand exactly what their motivations were for their actions.  Once they finally started to peel back the layers and expose themselves to one another I found them both much more relatable and likable.  The one character who was immediately lovable was Frankie Leigh, that girl was something else and seeing her find her joy and a whole family was worth any of the other things that happened in the book.

The plot of this book was many-faceted and beautifully layered.  There were some things that were predictable, but the way they were uncovered was interesting.  I loved all of the scenes with little Frankie Leigh, she just stole every inch of the spotlight when she was included.  It was obvious from nearly the beginning the three of them were something amazing and whole when they were all together.

My wish for this book was that there weren’t so many dropped pronouns.  I know this is a signature move for AL Jackson, almost all her heroes drop pronouns, but I feel like it’s becoming overdone.  I’ve never spoken to anyone who drops pronouns as often as these characters do, so to have every male character do it feels strange.

I usually love AL Jackson’s writing, and for the most part, I feel the same about the writing in Show Me the Way.  Rynna’s chapters, in particular, were spectacular.  Rex’s chapters were a harder pill for me to swallow.  While they were very much in AL Jackson’s style for male voice, it’s starting to feel like all those male voices are carbon copies of each other.

NOW LIVE!! The Choices I’ve Made by JL Berg

Death is easy.

Surviving it? That’s the hard part.

Dr. Jake Jameson knows this all too well. Losing his mother at the age of eighteen, he walks away from his small hometown and the painful memories it holds, vowing to never return again.

Twelve years later, he finds himself driving back down the coast of North Carolina. When his father leaves him a small medical practice, he has no choice but to heed the call until he can find someone else to take it off his hands.

But coming back home means facing everything he left behind, including the one woman who might make it impossible to leave again.

Molly McIntyre has spent her entire life in one town. Taking over her parents’ small inn, she’s settled into a quiet, happy life. But all of that comes to an abrupt halt when Jake shows up at her door in need of a place to stay.

Molly loathes everything about this man, but she can’t find it in her heart to refuse his request.

After over a decade, these former lovers quickly discover what once burned brightly between them has only grown in their time apart. Soon they must decide if the choices they’ve made have led them back to each other for a second chance or one final goodbye.

The Choices I’ve Made is available in Kindle Unlimited

I’m a California native, who lives in the South – Virginia to be exact. I still prefer sushi to fried chicken, avocados to okra, and I absolutely loathe humidity. I do love watching the seasons change though. My husband and I have been here for over a decade, and I still get giddy like a school girl every time it snows. It’s magical!

I’m married to my high school sweetheart, and we’ve been blessed with two beautiful daughters and two rescue pups I like to call my “coworkers”. I’m obsessed with chocolate, minions, anything Harry Potter and I love to watch re-runs of Friends and Gilmore Girls!

Wicked Ruin by SL Jennings is LIVE NOW!!

They say you’re never truly ready for Death until it’s staring you down, its cold, bony fingers outstretched and scratching against your fragile mortality.
I thought I was ready the day my own mother tried to kill me. Perhaps I was ready the moment I was born.
But as I peer into the chilling void of Death, breath shallow and heartbeat sluggish, I know that it can’t end like this. I was made for a purpose.
And that purpose is Legion.
Now that we’re fighting the battle of our lives, a war that could eliminate mankind, I see that purpose as clear as the whorls of dark ink etched in his skin.
Realms are colliding. Alliances are forming. And my heart is being torn in two.
I know the code the Se7en live by.
Kill one to save a million.
But maybe it’s not me who was meant to die.
Maybe it’s the man I thought I could save…the man who once saved me.
The man I was created to kill.
