ScrollerQuote1RED

Haven’t heard of the Love Like We Do series yet? It’s a coming-of-age, coming-out story of two 16-year-old boys. Don’t go labeling it right off the bat, though. This series isn’t simply for teens, and it isn’t only for LGBT readers. These books are for everyone. They’re about confidence, self-awareness, acceptance, truth, misconceptions, bigotry, friendship, family, and–most importantly–love.

ScrollerQuote1ORANGE

Trey Holland has been friends with Max Rosser and Callen McNare for years. While Trey and Callen both date girls from their private school, Max always has known he was different; and last year at his public school, his teammates began suspecting he was, too. Even though Trey has always been the common link between Max and Callen, he’s unaware that something more has been happening between his two best friends. When the news finally comes out, all of their relationships are tested.

ScrollerQuote1YELLOW

After their secret is exposed one night, Callen disappears. Max confides in his oldest brother that he suspects Callen ran away, unwilling or unable to accept the fact that he’s gay. Jon Scott, Max’s brother, helps to guide him through the most crucial time of his young life: coming out to their mother, to his father, and to his best friend of eight years. It has also become Jon’s responsibility to ensure Max’s safety in an environment that’s still unwilling to fully accept Max for who he is.

ScrollerQuote1GREEN

With the help of his brothers and friends, Max learns that he is much stronger than he once thought he was. Love Like We Do (Side A) is the first of two books in this series. This novel tells the story from Trey and Jon’s points of view–the outsider’s perspective.

ScrollerQuote1BLUE

Tomorrow, Love Like We Do (Side B) will be released. It will give you Max and Callen’s side of the story. The frustration of their hidden relationship burns steadily at the beginning. Once separated, the boys understand how their past way of doing things won’t work in the future. Callen watches from a distance, admiring the courage that Max displays in dealing with the fallout back home. He wonders if he has the backbone to stand up to his parents and the confidence needed to move forward with a relationship with Max.

ALP Synopsis

In her first year of college at Yale, challenging courses and new friends provide a much-needed distraction for Livvy Holland. Beyond the tears–for the most part– she won’t allow the lingering anger she harbors toward her ex-boyfriend to consume her.

Even after taking steps to conceal her identity, Livvy is still very recognizable and popular among her new classmates. She takes advantage of her situation and accepts dates with multiple guys, trying to piece together an image of ‘her type of guy’ that differs from all the good qualities Jon Scott once possessed.

An unexpected letter arrives on Livvy’s 18th birthday, shifting her focus and forcing her to reevaluate all the relationships in her life. She now knows the identity of her biological father, and struggles to make sense of the news alone. Fortunately, she won’t have to.

Just as Livvy’s life begins to normalize, one of her professors provides her with the creative opportunity of a lifetime. Trusting in the bonds she’s made with everyone she loves, she believes she can have everything she wants and makes the decision that allows her to be true to herself.

She was chosen for a reason. Chosen to be a gifted artist that–with a few strokes of a paintbrush–could touch people emotionally; profoundly. Chosen by her parents so they had a place to share their boundless love and devotion. Chosen by her friend so he could return the encouragement, inspiration and affection she’d shown him for so many years.

Livvy Holland will never again take her position in life for granted. She wears the name with humility and respect. She is Choisie.

alp-excerpt

When I reach the lobby, it’s not Finn that’s waiting for me. “James,” I say, recognizing Granna’s husband. I hadn’t seen him in months, and it wasn’t often that I spent any time with him socially. He traveled a lot, and wasn’t around very much. Granna’s independence helped make that marriage a success. I was starting to think that’s how Jon and I would have been, now that I’ve gotten some perspective. “Are you here to see me?”

“I am,” he says kindly. “First of all, happy birthday.”

“Thanks. Um, did you want to come up?”

It would be awkward to have him in the loft, but it was Donna’s before she left it to me. Maybe he heard about the renovations.

“No, I just needed to bring you this.”

He hands me an envelope. The stationery is soft, and feels more like fabric than paper. I recognize Donna’s handwriting immediately. Olivia Sophia Holland. Personal and confidential.

“What’s this?”

“This was part of her will, Livvy. She asked that I hand-deliver it to you on your eighteenth birthday.” It still surprises me how meticulously she had made her will, as if she knew she wouldn’t be around. My mother had reminded me that Granna had learned early on that life was brief, and could be over any day with no warning.

“Do you know what it is?”

“A card, I guess,” he says. “But she requested that you be alone when you read it.”

I look at him curiously. “That’s an odd request, isn’t it?”

“I thought the same thing. But I don’t question her.”

“Of course not,” I say with a wistful smile. “I still miss her every day.”

“I do, too. She loved you so much.”

“She loved you, too,” I tell him. He nods, looking sad. “Thank you for bringing this by. I can’t wait to read it.”

“Have a good birthday, Livvy. It’s good to see you.”

We hug one another before he turns to leave the building.

“That was a surprise,” Francisco says.

“Yeah. Hey, I was actually expecting someone else, so–”

“You don’t have to come down every time, you know? We have a master key that takes us to your floor. I can accompany someone up, if you’d like.”

“That would be great. Thank you. I guess I’ve got some reading to do.” I untuck the flap as I get back on

the elevator. When it doesn’t respond to the press of the H button, I remember to insert my key.

The note is handwritten, and dated a month before Granna died.

“My dearest Livvy,

“I’ve struggled with how to best deliver this news to you. I’d thought about telling you in person, but

ultimately I decided this is a private matter that you and you alone should face.”

When she wrote this, she had no way of knowing she’d be gone a month later.

“I have not told your parents, and I don’t want to play a part in your decision unless you specifically ask me to.”

ALP P's Review

Livvy is the emotional and heartwarming conclusion to the Choisie Series.

Have you ever felt so strongly about something that you were left unable to articulate? That is how I feel about these characters and this story. My words won’t do justice to describe the amount of love I carry in my heart for this series. It would be like trying to count the stars in the sky – simply immeasurable.

Reflecting upon the journey brings a smile to my face.

Livvy has become a confident and mature young woman, a far cry from the sometimes petulant and bratty teenager we saw early on in this series. While there is still a gaping hole in her heart left in Jon’s absence, she makes a concerted effort to move forward with her life and seek happiness once again. Her time at Yale provides her a much needed distraction from missing Jon and an opportunity to spread her wings. Livvy has endured, accomplished and overcome so much in the years that have spanned between Contessa and Livvy. I watched a young girl become a woman and I feel a sense of pride in a motherly sort of way. But I also watched a friend grow up, become an accomplished artist, fall in love and pave her own way.

Jon is the same confident young man and wise beyond his years. He is still madly in love with Livvy, but recognizes that she needs to find herself. So Jon keeps his distance to give Livvy her space, using school and work to distract him from the longing to be with the one person who both inspires and challenges him. While I was frustrated with Jon at times throughout the journey, I know his heart was always in the right place. He has matured into a charming man that is driven to be successful in both life and love.

As I sit here days after finishing Livvy, my heart is full and yet I am sad for the journey to end. This book is the perfect conclusion to Livvy and Jon’s love story and the chance to experience first love again has been full of memorable moments and extraordinary characters. I will cherish my time with Livvy and Jon and am looking forward to where Lori takes us next.

Book: Dear Jon (Choisie Series #3)

Author: Lori L. Otto

Released: August 2014

ALP Synopsis

A summer with his family in Utah is all Jon Scott needs to pull himself together. It’s time to focus on his mom’s sobriety and the continuing education of his two younger brothers, Will and Max. For once, things seem to be on track with that part of his life. For the first time, he sees real hope for his family.

This family time is a much-needed distraction from the relationship he walked away from in Manhattan. Livvy Holland, the girl he’s loved since they were children, has let him down for the last time. He doesn’t want to waste his time dwelling on the fight they had, or the shocking incident that happened the next day, after her graduation. It’s something he’ll never forget, or forgive.

Things never go as Jon plans, though. Despite her actions and a distance of two thousand miles, Livvy has every intention of keeping Jon’s attention throughout the summer with a series of 30 letters: three a week for every week he’s gone. He doesn’t have to read them; there are times when he simply doesn’t want to. He has plenty of things keeping him busy: a job that requires long hours, family friends that come over for parties, brothers that ask too many questions, and a girl that’s very unlike anyone Jon’s dated before.

But there’s something about Livvy Holland that keeps drawing him back to her. Reading the letters will either break the ties, or eventually reunite them. His brain wants one thing; his heart wants another.

By the end of the summer, Jon will return to Manhattan. He’s come to terms with his past. He has a bright future. Back at Columbia, though, he must accept choices Livvy has made without him that will change his present plans.

ALP Excerpt

“I want you to make love to me.” My voice cracks when I say it.

“Why?” he challenges me. Why? What kind of a question is that?

“Because I love you.”

“You wear my ring because you love me. You devote every Saturday night to me because you love me. You answer my calls every day because you love me. Why do you want me?”

“I don’t… I don’t think I understand.”

“Here’s what I want. I want to trail my fingers down the length of your naked body and feel the excitement they leave in their wake.”

I look around quickly, grateful that he’s not speaking too loudly.

“I want to smell the perfume you wear as I nip at your earlobe and whisper things to you I’m too afraid to say when I’m not inebriated by your very presence.”

I can’t believe he’s saying these things to me right here, in the light of day, as if he’s telling me about his classes or what color shoes he decided to wear today.

“I want to hear you pronounce my name with such desperation, supplicating me for more – deeper, slower – like you can’t get enough of me even though you’re holding me so tightly you leave marks on my skin that take days to disappear and underscore the words forever inscribed on my shoulder blade–”

“I’m sorry–” He interrupts my interruption with a surprising kiss, his hand supporting my neck as his mouth moves hard and fast against mine. I gasp when he pulls away, and my eyes are enraptured by the fervency of his gaze.

“I’m not,” he whispers, then shakes his head. “I want the taste of you…” He pauses and nods just so, making sure I fully understand what he’s implying. “…on my lips.”

“Jon!” I nearly shriek, taken aback by his brazenness and indelicate suggestion. Oddly enough, though, I’ve never been more attracted to him than I am in this moment. He laughs at my response.

“And I want to make you blush, just like that.” He touches his thumb to the warm skin of my face. “To see the glow of tamarisk in your cheeks when you’re coming down. There’s not a prettier color in nature.”

I can say nothing, do nothing, except stare at him with my mouth agape.

“And do you want to know why I want these things?”

It takes me a moment to realize he’s asked me a question, that he’s waiting for my answer. “Because you want me to be happy?”

“No.” Now both of his thumbs rub my temples as he stares lustfully at me, through me. My pulse is raging, and I can hear it in my ears and feel it coursing beneath my skin. “Because I’m a selfish man, and every one of those things rouses me and makes me want to take you in ways I never have — ways your virtuous mind has probably never even imagined. You engage me and provoke me and you drive me to the brink of insanity, and just when I think I’m gone, you save me, Olivia. A brush of your hand. A kiss. A whisper.”

ALP P's Review

This is by far one of the best alternate point of view books I have ever read. Not only did we get to be inside Jon Scott’s head, we got to see the transformation in Livvy through her poignant letters. This was not just a rehashing of the story told previously, but rather it was two separate stories of two lives that are completely intertwined.

As I reminisced with Jon through the words of Livvy’s letters, I had my own emotional experience that ranged from happy to sad and everything in between. At times, I was frustrated with Jon’s indifference. He was so consumed by the hurt of Livvy’s actions that he stubbornly refused to see what Livvy was trying to accomplish with her words. But I empathized with his anger towards her careless behavior and I admired his resolve to walk away.

I was so pleased to see Livvy mature and finally make some decisions with her own wellbeing in mind. I was also pleased to see Jon realize that his life will not be complete without Livvy. I just hope that their growth and maturity will eventually lead them back to one another. For now, they are where they need to be…apart…and learning how to live.

I am so anxious for the conclusion of Livvy’s story and yet I don’t want it to end. It’s been such a wonderful story and this book made me fall so much more in love with these characters. I am so invested in these characters, I don’t ever want their story to end.

Patricia’s Reviews

Contessa 5 STAR Review

It’s not often that I identify with a character in the books I read. That suits me just fine. In not identifying with the characters, I am able to successfully escape to that happy place that reading so often takes me. But this story really hit home for me. It was unique that I found myself not only identifying with Emi, as a mother, but I also found myself identifying with Livvy, the bratty teenager on a rebellious streak. This story was an experience like no other for me and I enjoyed every emotional and frustrating moment of Livvy’s journey.

At times, I wanted to smack some sense into Livvy for her rude and obnoxious behavior. I don’t doubt that her struggles with acceptance and feeling misunderstood were mostly attributable to her teenage mindset. After all, teenagers generally reach that point where they believe they know everything. But her rebellion ran so much deeper than just being a teenager. Her fascination with all things Nate was so intense that it bordered on obsession and blinded her to the pure and unwavering love that Jack showered her with daily.

My teenage self was cheering Livvy on as she began to experience some of what life had to offer. She had been fairly sheltered from the world under the loving care of Emi and Jack and it was fun to read about some of her experiences. Granted, she made some poor choices, but part of growing up involves making choices and living with the consequences of those choices. Watching her experience how a crush became so much more was beautiful and warmed my heart. Young love is so naïve and unassuming and I adored watching Livvy and Jon’s relationship develop.

The mother in me was torn much like Emi was at times. It’s difficult to find a balance between being a friend and being a mother to a teenage daughter. You want to give motherly advice but you want it to come across friendly in the hopes that they will heed your suggestions. You want to give them wings to fly but still keep them safe at home. It’s a difficult thing to let your daughter grow up and the older they get, the more challenging it becomes. Boundaries are often muddled and chaos sometimes ensues, much like what transpired with Livvy and Emi. As I read, I found myself wondering how I would have handled the situation had it been me and my teenage daughter. I admired Emi for her gentle and caring ways even when Livvy was being difficult and deceitful.

My heart hurt for Jack. He was so patient and kind with Livvy in spite of her hateful words and atrocious behavior. I loved Jack before, but I am infinitely more in love with him now for all that he endured and how he dealt with all things Livvy. His love was absolute and evident in all he did even though she was too blinded by her own notions to see what was right in front of her.

Woven into Livvy’s story was the rich history of Emi, Jack & Nate. I found myself teary eyed at times when the story would elude to or mention events from the Lost and Found Series. I especially loved getting to spend time with Emi and Jack as parents. This story was frustrating at times much like my own relationship with my daughter. But it was worth every frustrating moment when I wanted to reach into the book and slap some sense into Livvy or those moments when I wanted to be there to laugh with her and hug her.

Olivia 5 STAR Review

Olivia “Livvy” Holland is growing up, making some rather grown up choices all while learning lessons about life, family, friendship, love and herself. While her high profile life may be full of perks, Livvy would like nothing more than to live under the radar in her comfortable world with her doting boyfriend, Jon Scott. When events outside her control threaten her world, Livvy is forced to stop and evaluate what she wants for herself, independent of all the influences looming over her.

I loved watching Livvy grow up and seeing her turn into a young woman. I was frustrated with her at times, but that’s the mom in me. I cheered for Livvy much like I cheer for my own daughter and that heightened my connection to this story and these characters. I want so many things for Livvy but above all I want her to find herself and become accomplished in whatever will make her happy…truly happy.

I positively adore Jon, even if I was a little upset with his behavior a few times…again the mom in me. I also loved watching him grow into such a beautiful and thoughtful young man. His love for Livvy is unwavering even when things are uncertain in their worlds. Jon is absolutely the kind of boy I hope falls in love with my daughter one day.

This story gave me warm fuzzy feelings and tugged on my heart for reasons that hit close to home. The mom in me tried to sit back and take Livvy’s choices in stride, but I found myself chiding her more than once. The teenager in me remembered what it was like to be young, in love and seeing things through rose colored teenage eyes. I found myself cheering her on and raising my eyebrows at her simultaneously…if that is even possible. This is such a beautiful story about coming of age and I am excited to see what is next for Olivia Holland.

“There was true depth to the story and the characters that moved me and emotionally gutted me. I was so taken by Nate and Emi’s love for each other. It’s the kind of love that few have and many desire but never get to experience.” – Megan, Reading Books Like a Boss

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Independent and sensitive, idealistic and hopeful, Emi Hennigan lives her life with optimism and an open mind.  Between sharing a tiny Manhattan apartment with her fun-loving roommate and spending most of her free time with her heart-breaker friend, Emi’s seen enough failed relationships to know what to avoid in her quest to find her true love.  Not only that, but a single moment from her past lingers in her mind, setting high expectations for every man she dates.

Emi’s best friend, artist and hopeless romantic Nate Wilson, has been her closest companion all of their adult lives.  After swearing off love with Emi in a silly high school pact, Nate has been seeing other women in hopes of finding one that evokes stronger feelings than the ones he’s been harboring for Emi since he was a teen.  Over the span of a year, boundaries are crossed, feelings are confessed, and their unique friendship begins to blossom into something more.

Through Nate’s eyes, an atypical romance unfolds, disrupting the comfortable safe haven their friendship has provided.  With a promising future ahead of them both, fate intervenes to bring two soul mates together.

Not Today, But Someday (prequel)
Nate Wilson knows he wants Emi Hennigan from the moment he sees her. Emi knows she needs Nate after one night together. A life-long friendship is born, and a pact is made to ensure that nothing will come between them.
Lost and Found (book one)
After swearing off love with Emi in a silly high school pact, Nate has been seeing other women in hopes of finding one that evokes stronger feelings than the ones he’s been harboring for Emi since he was a teen.  Over the span of a year, boundaries are crossed, feelings are confessed, and their unique friendship begins to blossom into something more. With a promising future ahead of them both, fate intervenes to bring two soul mates together.
Time Stands Still (book two)
No man could compete with Nate, Emi thought, until one night – one evening, one party, one journey, one second alters her course completely. That night, her brother’s best friend, Jack Holland, comes back into her life with a mission.  In a year’s time, he slowly finds a comfortable place in Emi’s life, but only time will tell if it’s right for Emi – and enough for him.
Never Look Back (book three)
To say Emi’s life over the past two years has had its share of peaks and valleys is an understatement – and her friends and family would agree. In the conclusion to Emi Lost & Found, Jack guides Emi through a year of self-discovery, and teaches her that faith in true love – and in soul mates – can yield happiness from even the darkest of places.
Plus two bonus short stories!
