Small Town Siren by Lexi Blake ~ Sarah A’s Review

Re-released in a second edition with a prologue and three new chapters.

A woman trying to find her place in the world…

Abby left her hometown twenty years before under a cloud of scandal. She’s raised a daughter, forged a new life for herself, and is ready for the next phase when she meets the handsome cowboys.

One small town that’s ready to explode…

They’re a dream come true—Jack is the sexy Dom, and Sam the playful lover. It’s everything she’s ever fantasized about. There’s only one problem. She’s still not welcome in Willow Fork, and someone is willing to kill to keep her away.

I don’t usually gravitate toward erotica – and make no mistake; this book definitely fits that criteria – but I enjoyed every second of the reading experience of Small Town Siren.  When I’d first picked up the book I had assumed it was going to be more story heavy, especially after reading the prologue, and it did have a lot of story, but it was heavier on the sex.

Small Town Siren is the first book in Lexi Blake’s Texas Sirens series.  It was previously published under the pen name Sophie Oak.  This version has been re-edited, and a prologue and three new chapters were added.  Small Town Siren is told in third person POV from various characters.

Despite the fact I always love menages, I rarely read them.  I was highly impressed with this threesome from Lexi Blake.  Each of the characters was unique and fascinating; all three offered distinct, important roles in their relationship.  I appreciated how Lexi Blake illustrated that it took all three of them to develop a complete unit.   If any of the three weren’t involved, their dynamic wouldn’t survive and thrive.

While this book was far heavier on sex than I usually like, the storyline was still captivating.  I appreciated the added facet of having scenes from the antagonist of the book.  I wish we would have found out more about what was going on with the mental state of that character, but seeing their thoughts and desire to destroy the heroine (and heroes, if necessary) kept the story interesting.

I wish Ms. Blake would have delved into Jack and Sam’s respective pasts more.  I’m hoping that we’ll get to see more of what they’d experienced as children in the next installment of this series.  I also would have loved to see more of the courtship phase of their relationship, even if Abby wasn’t privy to the fact they were dating.  The innocence of the whole situation appealed to me so greatly; it would have been nice to see it first hand, rather than quickly rehashed in a couple of paragraphs.

Before this year (2017) I hadn’t read any Lexi Blake books.  I am glad she came up on my radar because I have enjoyed each of the books of hers I’ve read this year and have added several to my TBR and library.  She is definitely a guilty pleasure author, for me.  Her writing is captivating, and she layers intrigue and erotica fabulously.  I can not wait to get my hands on the next book in this series, Siren in the City, and will be keeping an eye out for future releases from Ms. Blake.

The door to the women’s room slammed open. Abby practically jumped, ready to beg whoever was walking through to give her some privacy. Jack filled the doorway with his presence.

“You can’t come in here, Jack.” She smoothed down her uniform and swept back her hair, trying to retain as much dignity as she could.

“Why not, darlin’? I am going to admit that I’m not a man who tends to let things like social conventions keep me out of a place I really want to be in.” Jack walked right up to her. The man really wasn’t big on personal space.

Sam walked in and closed the door. He leaned with his back against it. One boot rested negligently against the painted pink door.

“Sam, tell him he can’t come into the women’s room.”

“You’re the one who chose the venue for this particular conversation, Abigail.” There was nothing vaguely resembling a joke in Jack’s voice now. Abby looked to Sam for help.

Sam shook his head. He was grinning like an idiot. “Hell no, honey. You’re gonna have to learn that when Jack gets that hard edge to his voice, he means business. Besides, I’m happy with the way things went. Thank you, baby. You made this so much easier. Jack was talking about dating you and treating you like a lady. That was gonna take forever. It’s much simpler this way.”

“What’s simpler?” Abby was unable to keep the trepidation out of her voice.

“Taking you home, taking you to bed, and showing you where you belong,” Sam replied with a wink.

“Where do I belong?” Abby couldn’t take her eyes off Jack. There was a simple smile on his face that held a wealth of arrogance. He’d been serious. He really had been playing the gentleman. Abby got the feeling she was about to get a full dose of Jack Barnes, and damned if she wasn’t looking forward to it.

“Always between me and Sam.” Jack reached out and put his hands on her shoulders, his expression intense. “Tell me you don’t want us, Abby, and I’ll walk away right now. I won’t bother you again.”

“Don’t give her ultimatums.” Sam sounded a bit desperate. “I thought we’d give her a taste before we forced her to make a decision. Baby, why don’t you let us play around a little? I promise you’ll want us.”

She looked up into Jack’s forest-green eyes. They were very serious as he stared at her. His hand came up to cup her face. He forced her to look at him and Abby felt his will. It should scare the crap out of her, but she found it amazingly sexy. This was a man who would always keep his promises, no matter what it cost him.

“She already wants us.” Jack brushed his thumb across her mouth. It was all she could do to not open her mouth and suck his thumb in. “She just needs to admit it. Can you tell me you haven’t spent the last few weeks thinking about this? Thinking about you and me and Sam coming together in bed?”

“No,” she said. Jack’s eyes flared, and she felt compelled to continue. “I have thought about it, but I’m scared.”

The time for honesty was here. She could run, and they would probably accept her decision. She could give in and enjoy the sex and walk away. Or she could ask for what she wanted. She could be brave and tell them what she needed and what she was scared of. If she did that and it all fell apart, then she would have to forgive herself. She’d learned that one of the great joys of maturing was learning how to forgive herself.

“What are you scared of?” A deep crease appeared in Sam’s forehead. He walked up to her and leaned forward. “Honey, we want to take care of you. We don’t want to hurt you.”

She felt tears pricking at the edge of her eyes. Everything in her was screaming for that to be true. She wanted them. She craved them.

“You could be lying to me. You could want to make me look bad.” She could hear her teenaged self in the statement. She felt every bit as vulnerable as she had then. The last month she’d spent with these two disparately different men had been one of the best of her life. Every evening they’d spent together over the last month had made her want them more. More than once, she’d fantasized about them sweeping into the diner and carrying her away. Lately, when things went wrong, her first thought was to call Jack. Now that her fantasy seemed to be coming true, she didn’t trust fate.

Jack’s hands came out and soothingly rubbed the back of her neck. He hadn’t stopped touching her once. “Sweetheart, why would you say something like that? Why would we want to make you look bad?”

“Because the Echols family wants me out of town.” Her heart soared when she saw the complete confusion on their faces. They couldn’t make that up.

“Are you talking about that crazy old biddy who runs the church socials?” Jack seemed to struggle to place a name with a face. “She always looks at me funny.”

“Ruby. That’s her name.” Sam frowned. “She’s real unpleasant to me. Why would we do anything for her? For that matter, why would she care that you’re in town?”

Hope swelled inside her. They really weren’t gay, and they really weren’t working for Ruby Echols. If that was true, then she had to assume they wanted her. It suddenly didn’t matter that they were in a bathroom in a public place. She couldn’t wait to feel their mouths pressed to hers. It wasn’t forever. The universe didn’t work that way, but she could have this moment. She could have a few weeks with them.

“It doesn’t matter. Kiss me.”

“Which one?” Sam asked.

Abby continued to smile, looking from gorgeous man to gorgeous man. “It doesn’t matter, but one of you should kiss me.”

Jack’s eyes never left her face. “Sam, take care of that door. We wouldn’t want anyone walking in.”

Sam cursed and bemoaned his fate, but he walked back and took his previous position.

Jack took Abby’s face in both his hands. “I’m completely crazy about you, Abigail Moore.” He leaned over and finally, after what seemed to Abby like a lifetime of wanting, pressed his mouth to hers.

Abby felt helpless against the onslaught of desire that rocketed through her as Jack took her mouth. He plundered it, his tongue gently forcing its way in and dancing strongly around hers. She held on to his lean waist for dear life as he slanted over her mouth again and again. He poured his will into her and everything inside her responded. She felt that kiss in her pussy and already she was slick and warm. Jack’s hands reached up and pulled at the band that held up her hair. He set it free and pulled back to look at the mane of auburn locks he’d unleashed.

“You’re so fucking gorgeous,” Jack breathed almost reverently as he stroked her hair. In that moment, with Jack’s green eyes looking at her like she was some goddess he was worshipping, Abby felt gorgeous.

“Why don’t we take this home, people?” Sam’s voice was tight. Abby looked back at Sam, and his blue eyes were dark with passion.

He wanted to go home so he could join in. He wanted to have his turn. The thought should have turned her off, but all it did was get her hotter.

Jack’s lips turned up in a lazy smile. “You’ll have to forgive Sam, darlin’. He’s always so impatient. Always has been.” Jack suddenly lifted her up and set her on the counter. He looked back at his friend with great affection. “Do you have any idea how many times I’ve told him that anticipation is the best part?”

Jack’s hands pushed up the skirt of her uniform.

“Anticipation is damn frustrating, Jack. And I’ve been anticipating for weeks,” Sam complained.

This is the first book I’ve read by Lexi Blake.  This is book 14 in her Masters and Mercenaries series, these are truly interconnected stand-alones, as I feel like the story I read was complete.  I did have tons of questions about the other people in the book and I’m sure that having their stories would have enriched this story for me but it didn’t take anything away from it.  Love Another Day drew me in so much that I’ll definitely be adding all of the others to my TBR so I can be completely ensconced in this world by the time the next book is released.

While I truly enjoyed the plot of this novel, it was a little heavy on the sex, for me.  I know most other romance readers love that aspect but I can always do without it.  The good thing about the sex in this novel was that it always seemed to be moving Steph and Brody forward as a couple.  Those are the only kinds of sex scenes that I appreciate in a book.  The fact that the book wasn’t full of gratuitous sex made up for the amount, as far as I’m concerned.

Love Another Day was an intriguing and engrossing story.  The unknowns as far as Brody and Steph’s relationship, as well as the threat against Steph’s life, kept me from putting the book down for any longer than I absolutely had to.  I needed to know what was going to happen next.  I loved the way Ms. Blake gave just enough information to keep me interested without revealing so much that the mystery of the book was lost.  I appreciated the little glimpses of each of their pasts, but truly wish they both would have been more fully explored.  I think a good chunk of Steph’s story was probably explored in a previous novel, but I assume the fallout from that event wasn’t included there either.  The story wasn’t lacking, I just feel fleshing out those back stories would have made the experience of the novel more robust.

Brody was, by far, my favorite of the two main characters.  While at the beginning he was a bit of a dick, his reasoning for doing what he did was more fleshed out; therefore, it was far easier to understand.  Steph’s motivations, for most of the book, seemed rooted in her past.  While the major instigating event was explained there seemed to be a lot of pain and damage she had been through that was never fully explained.  I think having that information would have made her both more likable and understandable.

Lexi Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries world was rich and complex.  The interwoven nature of her characters made me want to know more, learn more about this reality she’s created.  It takes a talented hand to write a book that can be easily understood without prior knowledge of the series while adding enough information about the previously constructed relationships to make a reader want to delve into in wholeheartedly; Ms. Blake did this well and I commend her talent and commitment to her craft because of that.

The door slammed and she suddenly found herself with her back against it. Brody crowded in, taking up all the space and staring down at her. His body brushed hers and she found both her wrists captured in one of his. He dragged them over her head, forcing her chest to come out, breasts skimming along his body. “I shouldn’t do this.”

Tough chick was winning. Steph let her take over. It was surely better than the desperate girl who lived inside her. She kept asking for love and affection and getting swatted away. This was the next best thing, possibly the only thing she would ever get. “Then don’t. Let me go and I won’t bother you again.”

“No, you’ll go find Ezra Fain and bother him,” Brody said on a growl.

“Somehow, I don’t think he’ll find me a bother.” She’d barely spoken two words to the man, but she wasn’t going to admit it. It was better to let Brody think she wasn’t a love-starved girl.

“He won’t fucking find you anything at all. If you’re determined to not sleep alone tonight, you can damn well do it with me.” His mouth came down on hers and every inch of her skin came alive. His kiss was overwhelming, hungry. There was no slow meshing of mouths. He took her, his tongue surging inside and dominating her own. He let go of her hands and started to explore her body. His hands were on her hips when he came up for air. “I’m leaving in the morning. I’m going back to London and I can’t come back.”

She’d known that would probably be his answer. She’d known he wouldn’t want to stay and she couldn’t leave.

“One night. That’s all I want.” It was all she could have. It had been foolish to think it could be any different.

His mouth came down on hers again and she let herself get swept away. One night and her life would go back to normal. One night and then she would be alone again. His hands started to roam over her and she tried to forget all the reasons why this was a bad idea.

He stepped back, his entire body set in hard lines. He strode over to the bed and sat down. “Take off the gown. It’s pretty, but I want to see you.”

She hesitated, all her insecurities coming to the forefront. Somehow, she’d thought he would simply take her. “Let me get the lights.”

He was back in her space again, his hand wrapping around her wrist. “I didn’t say turn off the lights. I said take off the gown. How am I going to see you if you turn off the lights?”

“Brody,” she began.

He was having none of it. “You got on your knees in front of me and you said you knew what you were offering me. The first thing you were offering me was obedience. The second was your body. You’re giving me neither right now.”

His voice had gone midnight dark and something about the tone made her soften. He was right. She did know what she’d offered him and now she was trying to have it all her way.

There was nothing wrong with her body. It was feminine and she was healthy. What was she afraid of? “All right.”

He let go of her wrist and sat back down, looking like a damn king waiting on his concubine’s performance. For all his “I’m nothing but a grunt” talk, the man could be incredibly arrogant, and damn if she didn’t find it sexy as hell.

Something about that voice let her know that everything was going to be fine. He was past the point of rejection. He was in and that meant he would play her Dom for the night. He would take care of her. She was as safe with him in the bedroom as she’d been in the field.

At least she was safe for the night. In the morning she would be in a world of hurt, but she wasn’t thinking past tonight.

Case forced himself to stop. He pulled away from the drugging kisses she was giving him. He couldn’t go down that path. If he was going to take her, it would be on his terms and that meant he wasn’t going to play the idiot. He wasn’t going to ask for more than she could give him. He wasn’t going to pretend this was some grand love. She wasn’t Charlotte and he wasn’t Ian. They didn’t get that forever thing.

But they could have this.

“What’s wrong?” She looked up at him and then started to pull away.

He wasn’t going to let that happen. He turned her around so his front nestled her back. “Nothing’s wrong. I want to feel you. Do you have any idea how long I’ve waited to touch you, Mia? How often I’ve thought about this?” His hands were on her waist and he brought them up slowly. “I want to memorize every inch of your skin and do you how I’m going to do it?”

She leaned back into him. “You’re going to touch me.”

He loved how breathless she was. No other woman ever responded as honestly to him as she did. He could trust her body even if he didn’t trust the rest of her. Oh, she wouldn’t mean to hurt him. He actually believed that, but she would choose her world. She would choose her family over him. He could keep her for a little while.

“What am I going to touch you with, princess?” He moved slowly, letting his hands find the warm skin under her shirt.

“Your hands.” Her head fell back against his chest. Without heels on she didn’t quite reach his shoulders. “I want your hands everywhere, Case. They feel so good.”

“I will touch you everywhere, but that’s not all I’ll do.” He was right under her breasts. This was one of the things D/s had taught him. Sex required discipline. Patience. Control. He wanted to shove her on that bed and force his dick inside her, but that wouldn’t make it good for her. This methodical arousal of every inch of her body would make her ready for him, would make her scream for him.

Might make her stay with him for a while.

He flattened one palm on the curve of her belly, the other touching the band of her bra. There was zero reason to hide how hard he was. He let his cock rub against her backside. “I’m going to put my hands on you. I’ll touch your breasts and cup that hot ass of yours and I will let my fingers explore how hot and wet your pussy gets for me.”

“You’re killing me, Case.” She squirmed a little as though trying to get him to move.

He held her tight, his mouth against her ear. “Don’t. We haven’t talked about punishments so I’m not going to stop and spank that sweet ass, but now you’ve been warned. This is my time. It’s my time to explore your body and get you hot. I’ll give you time later, but for now you’ll let me enjoy how you feel under my hands.”

“D/s sucks,” she said with a shaky laugh.

He ran the tip of his tongue along her ear, enjoying the way she shivered. “No it doesn’t. It makes us take things slow and really get to know each other’s bodies and responses. It makes thoughtful lovers. I want to be your lover, Mia. Do you understand what I mean by that? I don’t want to be your boyfriend. I want to be your Dom. It’s different. A boyfriend can take you or leave you. A Dom is responsible for you. It means something deeper to me.”

“I’ve had boyfriends and not one of them made me feel the way you do,” she admitted. “Please don’t stop. I’ve waited so long for this.”
He could smell her shampoo and the soap she used. He leaned down and ran his nose along the graceful column of her throat. “When I’m done touching you, I’m going to taste you.” He ran his tongue from her collarbone back up to her ear. “I’m going to lick you and we’ll see how you like a little bite.”

He nipped at her ear, just a little sharp bite that made her jump in his arms. She groaned, but it wasn’t one that told him she was in pain.

“I think I like it, Case,” she replied, her breath shaky. “The training course alone taught me that.”

He growled. “I don’t like the thought of someone else training you.”

Her body shook with her husky chuckle. “Javier and I were just friends. Promise. I liked the flogger he owned more than him. I liked the sting. I thought I could maybe survive a thud, but I got so hot when he hit me with the stinger. I wasn’t thinking about him though. I always thought of you. It was never him holding that son of a bitch and making me beg for more.”

Fuck, she could talk dirty, too and that did something for him. “I didn’t bring a flogger with me. I should have been more optimistic, but I think you’ll find I can still take care of you. I’ll find all kinds of things to torture you with, princess. But first I’m going touch everything that just became mine.”
