Synopsis

The Lie AMAZONTheir love led to a lie.

Their truth led to the end.

Scottish enigma Brigs McGregor is crawling out from the ashes. After losing his wife and son in a car accident – and, subsequently, his job – he’s finally moving forward with his life, securing a prestigious teaching position at the University of London and starting a new chapter in the city. Slowly, but surely, he’s pushing past the guilt and putting his tragic past behind him.

Until he sees her.

Natasha Trudeau once loved a man so much she thought she’d die without him. It took years of moving on to forget him, and now that she’s in London, she’s ready to start over again.

Until she sees him.

Because some loves are too dangerous to ever rekindle.

And some loves are too powerful to ignore.

Can you ever have a second chance at a love that ruined you?

Excerpt

Without even thinking, I end up in Natasha’s neighborhood, on her street. I pull the car over and stare at her building. I can drive off. I can go blow off some steam with Lachlan. I can drive and scream and wish to god that things were different.

But I don’t want to do it alone.

I get out of the car and head to her flat.

I knock on her door, wondering if she’s even in, if she might still be sleeping. It’s still early on a Saturday and we don’t see each other on the weekends without it being work related, such as seeing a classic film at the cinema. I hadn’t planned to talk to her until Monday, her last week of work as my research assistant before going back to London.

My heart pinches at that thought.

She’s leaving me.

What the hell am I doing?

But then the door opens slowly and she’s staring at me with wide eyes, her hair piled on top of her head in a messy bun, a fluffy robe around her body.

“Sorry,” I say quickly, immediately feeling bad. “Did I wake you up?”

She yawns. “Kind of, but I should be getting up anyway. What’s, um, up?”

I rub my lips together. “I…I wanted to know if you wanted to go for a drive?”

“Where?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. Far away. But not too far. I have to be back by twelve-thirty for Hamish.”

“What time is it now?”

“Eight-thirty.”

She rolls her eyes. “And you were wondering if you woke me up. I should still be sleeping for at least another two hours.”

I nod, embarrassed at my enthusiasm. I’m being inappropriate. “I should go.”

I turn around, but she reaches out and grabs my arm, holding tight. “No, don’t,” she says. “I want to go with you. Just give me five minutes, okay?”

I turn to look at her and she’s flashing me a persuasive smile.

“I’ll be in the car,” I tell her.

Somehow she’s true to her word. In five minutes she’s jogging down the steps of her building, dressed in jeans and a tank top that shows off the tawny warmth of her summer tan. She hasn’t touched her hair at all; it’s still up in that bedhead bun, and there isn’t a bit of makeup on her. She doesn’t need it. She looks joyful. She looks absolutely beautiful.

“You’re fast,” I tell her as she slips into the passenger seat.

She giddily drums her hands across the dash and beams at me. “I’m fast when I want to be. I love this car. Where are we going again? Oh right, somewhere far away. Can we get coffee first? I’m dying.”

I can’t help but grin at her as I turn the key. The car starts on the first turn. She’s my good luck charm. “You don’t seem like you need coffee.”

“I always need coffee,” she says emphatically. “You know this. So where to?”

“I honestly don’t know. You pick.”

“Do you have a map?”

“Of Scotland?”

“Yeah.”

I nod at the glove compartment. “In there.”

She opens it and it falls open with a clunk. She takes out an old faded road map and starts looking it over.

“Anything strike your eye?”

“I’m looking for Loch Ness.”

“That’s too far.”

“Okay, is there like another lake with a swamp monster?”

“Nearly all the lochs are in the Highlands.”

Arrrrrrrrrr in the Highlands,” she says playfully, imitating my accent.

“Okay, maybe no coffee for you.”

“Don’t be cruel, Professor Blue Eyes.” She goes back to studying the map but the mention of my nickname makes a small fire build inside me. And not one of anger.

She points on the map. “Here. Balmoral.”

“That’s where the Queen lives.”

“I know. I want to say hello.”

“It’s a two-hour drive,” I point out.

“Well, then we better get cracking,” she says. “The Queen is expecting us.”

She’s definitely full of spirit today. It seems to latch onto me and I ingest it like a tonic. She’s erasing all the humiliation and pain from the morning.

We head out of the city, taking the A-90 to the M-90 and speed north. After we get her some coffee and we share a couple of sausage rolls for breakfast, I warn her that we literally will see the estate and have to head back. But she doesn’t mind.

And honestly, neither do I. I crank the old radio on the car to pick up an oldies station playing a special on Otis Redding. The day is warm and gorgeous, and even though we’re going fast, our windows are down, enjoying the wind and the sun on our skin.

About an hour into our drive, Natasha turns to me and says, “Tell me the truth. Why did you come to get me this morning?”

“Was it that unusual?” I ask without looking at her.

“Yes,” she says. “The last time you came to my house without me knowing…”

“Back then I was following up on an email. I wanted to know if you were all right,” I tell her before she can tell me anything else about that night.

“And now I want to know if you’re all right,” she says gently.

I glance at her. There’s a softness in her eyes that undoes me. I grip the wheel hard, conscious of my every movement and how they might appear to her. A good man, after the night she kissed me, the night I kissed her right back, would have never been alone with her again.

But I’m not a good man.

I’m a man who is slowly but surely falling in the wrong direction.

thelieteaser1Whitney’s 4.5 Star Review

Since meeting Bram in The Play, I have been dying to get my greedy hands on Professor McGregor!  With his tragic but mysterious past, there was no doubt Karina Halle was going to weave a story of heartbreak that hopefully would leave us smiling at the end.

I feel like I should address the elephant in the room (err, book) as much as I can without providing spoilers.  The aspect of cheating in books is a hot topic and one that I know often receives criticism.  I, myself, am sometimes reluctant to read books with known cheating.  I also know this book has received some early haters based solely because of the way our two main characters meet.

So I will leave it at this:  Karina doesn’t hide how Bram and Natasha originally fall in love nor does she (or the characters) excuse their behavior.  It’s handled in a classy way and probably not as bad as you might be cooking up in your imagination.  Both of these characters have really good self control.  Which honestly, you put me in a room with Professor Blue Eyes and I’d be toast.  Whew… he’s hot.  But back to the whole cheating thing.  It happens, it’s not as bad as you think but what does happen is essential to the story and to the development of both of these characters.  Their guilt, their shame, their self loathing is all a direct result of their past.

The Lie really gets into the nitty gritty of human emotion.  There are no perfect characters, no princes or princesses to woo the reader.  What we get are two very damaged and yes, flawed, individuals who are lucky enough to meet their soul mate.  Natasha and Bram both change quite a bit as they let go of their past and learn to find happiness again.  And of course, it’s not an easy road.  I think this can definitely be described as a forbidden romance.

Karina is one of my go to authors.  She does an excellent job of overall story development.  Her characters, the mood, the setting all fit together and it works for me time and time again.  So if you’re a fan of the other books in this series, please give this a chance.  It’s not all light and fluffy, unicorns and rainbows but it’s very real.  Even after a few uncomfortable moments, I am so glad I read this and would recommend it to anyone.

the play tour banner
 ALP Synopsis1

A troubled Scottish rugby player who doesn’t play by the rules.
A vivacious man-eater who’s given up on love.
When it comes to Lachlan and Kayla, opposites don’t just attract – they explode.

Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her thirties and saw her best friends Stephanie and Nicola settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla to be the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the backburner.

That is until she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram’s cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. Lachlan is her sexual fantasy come to life – tall, tatted, and built like a Mack truck. With a steely gaze and successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, he’s the kind of man that makes her want to throw her vow right out the window. But Lachlan’s quiet and intense demeanor makes him a hard man to get to know, let alone get close to.

It isn’t until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes there is so much more to this brooding macho man than what meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can’t stay in America forever. Now, Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again.
Sometimes love is a game that just needs to be played.

Whitney’s 4.5 Star Review

When you’re already crying during the prologue, you know you’re in for another great book!

Lachlan’s past broke my heart.  He’s very guarded and once you learn what his life was like, it’s no wonder.  His trust is hard to earn and he has had no interest in even a physical relationship with any women he’s met in quite a while.

Kayla, the crazy friend we got to know in the previous two books of this series, has sworn off men in order to get her life on the right track.  But being around Lachlan makes her rethink her no hook-up rule.

As she realizes there is more to Lachlan than his sexy exterior, Kayla knows she doesn’t just want a no strings attached quickie… she wants Lachlan.  All of him.

The build up to their relationship is pretty slow and then BAM, they are all in.  But Kayla hesitates to move to Scotland and put all her trust in the first man she’s loved in a long time.  Lachlan realizes he is not as over his past as he though and it may destroy his chance with Kayla.

This may be my favorite book of this series.  Lachlan and Kayla are fantastic characters and I loved the message about pet adoption/animal welfare. The story flows well and other than a few places where it got a bit slow, I was able to keep turning the pages pretty quickly.

You don’t have to read the other books in this series to enjoy The Play but I definitely recommend it!

From the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of Where Sea Meets Sky comes a new adult novel about a young woman who becomes a nanny in Capri and falls for her charges’ bad-boy brother.

When I’m traveling, I feel like the secret to my life, to myself, to really becoming, is one step ahead. It’s in the next destination, the next town I get lost in, the next stranger I talk to. It’s always next but never here . . .

After six months of backpacking and soul-searching across the world, Amber MacLean is flat broke. There are worse places for a twentysomething to be stuck than the Amalfi Coast, but the only way she can earn enough money for a plane ticket home to California is to teach English to two of the brattiest children she has ever met.

It doesn’t help that the children are under the care of their brooding older brother, ex-motorcycle racer Desiderio Larosa. Darkly handsome and oh-so-mysterious, the young master of the crumbling villa tests Amber’s patience and will at every turn—not to mention her hormones.

When her position turns into a full-time nanny gig, Amber grows dangerously closer to the enigmatic recluse. But can she give up the certainty of home for someone whose closely guarded heart feels a world apart from her own?

Racing the Sun is a heartwarming tale that will capture your heart with its poignant love story and captivate your senses with its stunning scenery. Karina Halle provides the ultimate escape from reality with eloquently described scenes and charming characters you can’t help but love.

I enjoyed Amber and Derio immensely. They were likeable characters with vulnerabilities that gave them depth. Amber was carefree and adventurous while Derio was isolated and hardened by the circumstances of his life. Their chemistry was undeniable and the passion was overwhelming when they finally succumbed to the magnetism.

Racing the Sun spoke to my heart and I was completely enthralled with this story. Though heartbreaking at times, I was utterly content in the end. I have added Capri to my bucket list of places to visit before I die and I have Karina to thank for that addition. The experience was unforgettable and Racing the Sun has been added to my list of favorite reads of 2015.

Whitney’s Six Star Review

Everything about Racing the Sun was a breath of fresh air for me.  From the first pages, Amber’s search for freedom captivated me.  She is a great heroine- fun and honest with hints of vulnerability that keep her real.

Broke and travelling alone throughout Europe, she doesn’t even have enough money to buy a plane ticket back home.  She has two months left on her travel visa in Italy and realizes she needs to find a job fast.  Asking her overbearing parents for more money isn’t an option.

Amber quickly realizes the ‘easy’ job teaching English to two Italian children will be anything but easy.  The kids are brats but even worse… their older brother and guardian is a brooding jerk.  Shutting himself off from the world and pretty much all social contact, Derio, is off limits for Amber.  He’s completely sexy and completely untouchable.

More time spent at their home reveals the painful past for the entire family and Amber’s big heart can’t help but want to make their lives easier.  She and Derio become closer and their attraction grows.  But with a two month time limit, how much should Amber really invest in their relationship?

This book is only told from Amber’s POV but it was also easy for me to connect with Derio.  We learn pretty quickly what his ‘issues’ are and then his motives, his behaviors make sense.  He’s a guy with a lot of old wounds and Amber makes him feel alive again.  The way their relationship grows is beautiful.  They are perfect for each other in every way… at least initially.  I wanted to shake the mess out of him a few times but Derio is just… whoa.  Sexy with a few of those broken, bad boy qualities that make women’s panties drop.

This book might actually be my favorite of the series and it’s truly a stand alone.  You don’t need to read Love, In English or Where Sea Meets Sky to understand everything and the other characters do not make appearances in this book though they are very, very briefly mentioned.  Karina paints a beautiful picture of Italy.  So much so that I could feel the sun shining on my face and almost hear the waters of the sea.  In the previous book, some of the travelling and descriptions took over the storyline but that is not the case with Racing the Sun.  The setting is important to the book and really sets the tone but in no way takes away from the emotion and development of this amazing love story.

This will be one of my top reads for the year and I encourage everyone to give it a try!

EXCERPT

When reality starts to fade in a bit, I find myself being walked to the door of my apartment building, my arms draped over both Kayla and Steph. We go up the stairs and now I’m standing in front of my door, wobbling back and forth, trying my hardest to look as sober as possible.
Steph goes to knock on the door but it’s already open. I guess we are being loud, giggling, in the hallway.
Bram looks at the three of us and my God is he a sight for sore eyes.
“We brought her home,” Steph says, motioning with her hand for Bram to get out of the way, “your shift is over.”
“No,” I tell them as they shuffle me inside. “He can stay.”
I know the three of them are exchanging a look over my head.
“I’ll make sure she goes to bed,” Bram explains. “No funny business, I swear.”
“Pinky swear?” Steph says and I turn to see her holding out her pinky to him. “You know I don’t break those.”
Ugh, Steph and her damn pinky swears. She wouldn’t even be married to Linden if it weren’t for one.
But Bram does a pinky swear with her.
“No funny business,” Steph warns him.
“Good thing I’m not funny!” I yell as I flop down on the couch. The room is beginning to spin.
“Nic, that was, like, five minutes ago,” Steph says. She reaches over the couch and pats my head. “Do you want us to undress you because Bram’s not allowed.”
“No one undresses me but me!” I yell, throwing my fist up into the air.
“Have fun with her,” Steph says to Bram. “And remember, she’s untouchable. Don’t make me make your brother punch you in the junk or something.”
Bram makes a scoffing noise. “Last time he tried to do that, I got him back good. You just ask him what happened on January 16th, 2005 and why he’ll never eat pudding again.”
“I mean it,” Steph threatens and I hear her and Kayla leave and the door closing.
I close my eyes too. Drift away for a moment. The spinning has stopped and there’s a beautifully cool breeze wafting over my skin.
“I’m not supposed to touch you,” Bram’s gruff voice says and when I open my eyes, he’s crouched in front of me, a lock of dark hair over his forehead. His face is shadowy in the dark, the only light now being from my bedroom behind him.
“That’s okay,” I mumble into the couch. “You can touch me. I say it’s fine.”
“How about I bring you something to sleep in? Do you have a favorite nightshirt? I always see you in that top that your nipples try and poke right through.”
“No, not the nipple shirt.”
He goes to get up. With a lazy hand, I grip his shirt. “Don’t leave. I’m fine here.”
“I can’t imagine you being comfortable.”
“I’m drunk. Everything is comfortable. Except I wish I had a cheeseburger. I would eat it and use it as a pillow. Or maybe use it as a pillow and then eat it.”
“I see.”
I raise my brow at him. “You just want to go through my underwear.”
“Oh, I’ve already gone through your underwear.”
“Lies.”
“I wore them on my head and danced around your apartment.”
“Did you really?” I ask, totally serious.
“Come on,” he says grabbing my forearms. “If you want to sleep in your clothes, that’s fine. But I’m bringing you to your own bed and taking off your shoes.”
“Can you brush my teeth too? I need clean teeth.” I let him pull me to my feet and I pitch to the left, heading right for the coffee table. But I’m in his arms, his capable arms, and he’s holding me to him.
“You have capable arms.”
“You have an exquisite arse,” he responds and half leads me, half drags me out of the living area and into the bedroom.
“I like the way you say arse,” I say with a giggle, exaggerating his accent. “I like the way you say everything.”
“I’m glad, because I foresee a lot of arse talk in the future.”
“Yeah, yeah.” I try and swat him away. “All talk and no arse pinching.”

 Whitney’s Four Star Review

The Offer is a sexy and emotional spin-off of The Pact, featuring Bram (Linden’s brother) and Nicola (Stephanie’s friend) as the main characters.  Nicola is a single mom and hesitant to trust any man after her past with her child’s father.  Bram is a wealthy playboy and the last person Nicola sees herself dating.  Bram’s relentless pursuit and charm wear her down and they embark on a relationship that surprises them both by becoming serious.
A dual POV helps us connect well with both characters.  This is especially helpful for Bram because, well, he’s kind of an ass.  At least he is until we get to know him better.  I quickly warmed up to him though and the dirty talking Scot won both my heart as well as Nicola’s.
Stephanie and Linden make several appearances as well as many other characters mentioned in The Pact.  Karina’s writing flows well and she does a great job writing dialogue.  I think Nicola’s daughter was actually my favorite characters.  She’s a total sweetheart and I found myself chuckling a lot when she was around.
I’m not sure why but something kept me from connecting fully with these characters and the story which is what kept this from being a five star read.  I can’t really point to anything in particular but I remain a huge Karina fan.  Anyone who enjoyed The Pact will like this book as well and I recommend this series to anyone wanting a sexy contemporary read!

A new adult novel that perfectly captures the existential angst of your early twenties with raw wit, fresh insight, and true feeling from a critically adored USA TODAY bestselling author.

Joshua Miles has spent his early twenties spinning his wheels. Working dead-end jobs and living at home has left him exhausted and uninspired, with little energy to pursue his passion for graphic art. Until he meets Gemma Henare, a vivacious out-of-towner from New Zealand. What begins as a one-night stand soon becomes a turning point for Josh. He can’t get Gemma out of his head, even after she has left for home, and finds himself throwing caution to the wind for the first time in his life. It’s not long before Josh is headed to New Zealand with only a backpack, some cash, and Gemma’s name to go on. But when he finally tracks her down, he finds his adventure is only just beginning. Equally infatuated, Gemma leads him on a whirlwind tour across the beautiful country, opening Josh up to life, lust, love, and all the messy heartache in between. Because, when love drags you somewhere, it might never let go—even when you know you have to say goodbye.

Whitney’s Five Star Review

Didn’t think anyone could top Mateo? Well, Joshua is going to give him a run for his money!

I fell for the brief glimpses of the misguided and seemingly unfocused Joshua in Love, In English/Spanish. Now he has his turn at a HEA but like Karina always does, your heart will be put through the wringer to get there.

Joshua meets Gemma right before she is due to go home to New Zealand. They share one incredible night together that leaves Joshua questioning everything. He realizes he needs more focus, more direction but what better way to start off than by taking a little trip to ‘discover himself’? He sets off to New Zealand, hoping but not convinced he will ever see Gemma again.

It doesn’t take long for them to find each other and the sparks fly even as Gemma is now dating someone else. *queue my first desire to throw my kindle*

We get an alternating POV story with two characters who are so clearly perfect for each other but at the same time really need to discover who they are on their own before they can handle a relationship. There are bumps along the way, of course. Gemma is actually more directionless with her life than Josh and sometimes I just wanted to kind of smack the girl. I loved her, don’t get me wrong but I am very glad we got her POV so we could understand why she does some of the things she does.

Beautifully written, this book will want to make you pack up and go to New Zealand from all of the amazingly descriptive locations. Karina’s attention to detail will make you feel like you are on vacation! Albeit one that’s a bit frustrating while Josh and Gemma get their lives together. So yes, there is a decent amount of angst in this book. But it’s well balanced with lighter moments and a few very hot sexy moments.

I highly recommend this book and although it would be nice if you’ve read Love, In English first you really don’t have to. This can stand alone. Five amazing stars!
