NEW RELEASE!! Waiting for Autumn by JA DeRouen ~ Sarah A’s Review

Sebastian

“Race me for it.”
Four simple words. Five desolate years.

Sebastian Kelly believes he isn’t worthy of redemption, of a chance to right his wrongs. But an unexpected trip home, the place he dreads most, calls in question everything he’s come to believe. And who knows, he may find exactly what he’s been waiting for.

Autumn

One broken promise. Two pink lines.

Autumn Norris knew in an instant her life would never be the same. Years have flown by in a flurry of sparkles and dress up, and Autumn has refused to let the anchor of regret pull her under.

Until she lays eyes on Sebastian, and the wave of why, where, and how could you flood her every thought.

Old hurt and new betrayal twist first love into a reluctant partnership, and theirs may be a bond even pigtails and butterfly kisses can’t mend. But the past five years have felt like a lifetime, and Seb is willing to wait as long as it takes.

Because the truth is, he’s always been waiting for Autumn.

When I started reading this book I knew I’d read the story before; I just couldn’t figure out where or how. After some searching, I figured out bones of the story was originally published in an anthology at the beginning of the year, and I had loved it, even wished that Autumn and Sebastian would get their own story and I was not disappointed by the full-length version of their story at all.

Second-chance romances are my kryptonite; I swear there is just something so special about two people who have been in love rediscovering and rebuilding their love to be stronger than before and Ms. DeRouen delivered a beautiful love story for Autumn and Sebastian in both the past and the present. Their time apart and all that transpired to make it happen broke my heart, but it was so wonderful to see them come to terms with and overcome all of it.

I loved Autumn and Sebastian in their novella in the Begin Again anthology, and they were even better once I got to read their story in its entirety. Their love was so vibrant and true, even when they weren’t sure they could be together again, I knew what they had together was strong enough to prevail over all the sins of their pasts. Honestly, I think I could have kept reading about these two long after the novel ended; there was just something so magical and real about their relationship and how their story was told.

Waiting for Autumn is a standalone novel, with a tiny tie-in to JA DeRouen’s Over series, if you haven’t read the series, you’d never notice it. If you have read the series, it’s a lovely little glimpse at characters we’ve come to know and love. I would certainly love to see another book set in this world; I really think Autumn’s brother deserves his own story. Waiting for Autumn is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Autumn and Sebastian.

Man, I have a love-hate relationship with novellas. I love having a story that can be read in less than an hour, but all too often I find myself needing more. It’s like a sampler platter, so, so good, but there are always items you didn’t get enough of. The Begin Again anthology had a lot of that going on since it is predicated on new beginnings. In full disclosure, I didn’t read all of the stories in this book before writing this review.

Breaking Point
Autumn Grey

This is one of the stories I needed more of. I loved how Mason and Asher’s story was starting, and I hope that Ms. Grey finds the time and desire to write their story to a happily ever after. She did a wonderful job of whetting my whistle as far as these two were concerned, but I need more to feel satisfied.

Mason pulled at my heartstrings, so much. He’d been through so much, lost so much; it was hard to not feel heartsick for him. Especially when part of what he’d lost was right there, every day, enforcing that missing part of his life. Asher was more of a mystery, and I would love to get more of his backstory. From the little we did find out about his past, it seemed like he had a lot to recover from, too.

I loved Asher and Mason when they were together. The addition of Asher’s twin, Addison, added just enough levity to the story to keep it fun. I hope, eventually, we’re treated to the rest of Mason and Asher’s story, as I imagine those two are going to have quite a ride to get to a place where they can be completely whole and happy.

Waiting for Autumn
JA DeRouen

This story broke my heart. It really brought to mind how easily one small choice, something a person does all the time can irrevocably change lives. It also highlighted how easy it is to put the blame for those poor decisions in the wrong place, whether it’s on yourself or on a scapegoat because it’s easier than accepting what actually happened.

Sebastian was wonderful; I loved that he took a horrific situation and – with a little support from kind-hearted people – pulled himself from the depths of his own personal hell and found success. He also showed strength not many people his age have, especially those who’ve experienced the losses he had. He won me over with little effort, and I loved seeing him overcome the circumstances thrust upon him by others.

I sincerely hope JA DeRouen gives Sebastian and Autumn a full-length novel. I would love to see them work out all the history they have and learn to love and trust one another fully again. It would also be wonderful to see more of Brady, as he proved himself to be a wonderful character in the little time he was in the book.

I honestly don’t have the appropriate vocabulary to talk about this book.  And I can not talk about it without including its mate, Low Over High.  The two books are so seamlessly and fantastically entwined if I hadn’t just finished both I could not begin to tell you where one ended and the next began.  This duet also flows perfectly from the Over series, from which it is based.

God.  Marlo and Ever.  Each couple in this series had more than their fair share of hurdles to overcome but this couple.  These people.  They hit me hardest.  Their story was the one that I could relate to most readily.  Their pain was more familiar to me than the others was.  While I hadn’t been in all the places both of them had, there were traumas I had experienced and demons I have watched people close to me fight.  To witness two people, fight all those horrific things when they were so young tore my heart and soul to pieces.

I am in awe of how sublime the Marlo and Ever’s story was.  I was completely taken aback by the ways that Marlo grew and dealt with the injustices she had been dealt.  I was even more impressed by how awe-inspiring Ever’s journey through neglect, loss, drugs, and recovery was.  The anguish he had suffered at the hands of his parents, his ‘friend’, and himself could have easily been insurmountable but that marvelous, devastated boy managed to find the strength within him to overcome and soar to amazing heights.

As much as I loved the catharsis that was the reunion of Ever and Low, it was equally devastating.  There were moments I wanted to hate Marlo for the ways she tried to push and hurt Ever, since it was from a place of protecting herself it was hard.  Watching them both lay all of their scars out for one another, seeing them begin heal each other from those mortal wounds, I felt it all down in the deepest edges of my soul.  It was heart-wrenching and beautiful.

Until five days ago, JA DeRouen was completely new to me.  I’d never opened a single page of her books.  Now, I’ve read them all.  As soon as I figured out this duet was a continuation of her Over series I knew I had to read them first.  And good lord, am I glad I did.  This entire series was wonderful, the premise, the characters, all of it.  For me, the best part was seeing how greatly JA DeRouen had grown as an author.  From Hope Over Fear to Ever Over After there was an amazing amount of growth as an author.  While Hope was an amazing story and well told, it didn’t hold a candle to the story-telling that was in Ever.  I am so happy that I was able to see how she honed her skills and improved her craft in these books.  I can only hope that she continues to grow and evolve in the same way.  I will also wish and beg for her to continue writing in this world she’s created.  There are so many more stories I want to see, particularly Jeb’s, that guy needs a break.

ALP Excerpt Owl

Her Jeep is in the driveway. A soft top, fire engine red, Jeep Wrangler. Blood red is more like it. We’re talking about Marlo, after all. How fitting. One hundred, no, a thousand, vehicles lined up in a row, and that’s exactly what I’d pick for her. Lots has changed, but some things stand the test of time.

Low … my Low, is on the other side of that door, curled up in bed, her usual sass kept in check by sweet, sweet dreams. I imagine what it would be like to come home to her. Her eyes closed, lashes like butterfly wings resting on her flushed cheeks—an uninhibited smile playing on her naked lips. She’s got nothing on but a white tank top and panties … the elastic edging of the black silk denting deliciously into her flesh.  She’s curled in the fetal position, that fabulous ass rounded and waiting for me to palm it, hard nipples pushing into stretched, white cotton.

Damn. Damn.

I shift in my seat, pushing my palm into my lap, mentally chanting to myself to calm the hell down. Nothing like an active imagination and an ill-timed boner to make me really feel like a stalker.

I swipe the card off the dashboard, my rebuttal to Marlo’s note of warning, and fold out of the car. I look both ways as I cross the street, not for cars, but for nosy neighbors who may call the cops or wrestle the possible robber to the ground. Part of me wishes something would happen. I hope Marlo has people who look out for her.

A bigger part of me wishes she’d hear me coming and meet me on the porch for an epic showdown … in the previously mentioned tank and panties, if I had my way.

The need to see her, to run my eyes over every piece of her and remind myself she’s more than a memory, is staggering. There were times when I wasn’t sure. She feels like a lifetime ago … another time … when I was a different person. That’s partly true.

Back then, even in the deep haze of it all, I could feel my love for Low trying to claw its way out, begging to break free. But the cancer growing inside me, that extreme sense of loss, strangled everything else. In the end, I let the fog envelop me and opted for numb.

God, I was an idiot.

I’ll never make that mistake again. Never.

I wedge my note into the seam of the door and place a palm to the paned glass. I clench my eyes shut and rest my forehead on the door, only for a moment. As much as I want to curl my fingers into a fist and knock, it has to be her. I need her to come to me.

And when she does, I’ll be ready.
