I struggled with reading this book, and I’m struggling with writing a review for it too.  It wasn’t that I don’t love the love story; it was the rest of the book that fell flat to me.  There were several places where it felt like the plot had been going in one way, then the author decided to change direction and tried to force earlier details into the new narrative.  It made the experience of reading awkward.

I loved the glimpse of Kellie and Brian’s story we got in Hollywood Playboy and was so looking forward to this book.  Thankfully, their connection and relationship building was the high points of the novel, so I didn’t feel let down on it.  They were adorable together, and the care and affection they had for one another were evident from the beginning.  As much as I appreciated that things progressed slowly between them, I did some of the situations they were put in a little tedious and repetitive.

The suspense element of the book fell flat for me.  It often felt forgotten in favor of adding more scenes to cause tension between Brian and Kellie, which seemed a poor decision.  While I was able to figure out who the bad guy was pretty soon off, I felt like the payoff of how they figured out who was behind the stalking never happened.  Brian kept talking about how one element was going to be the key to discovering who was sending the items, but then we never found out why – or how – that item came into play.

If this book was just about Brian and Kellie, and their love story it would have been fantastic.  They were adorable together, and I believed in them.  When they were together and just being themselves, the story flowed nicely, and I felt completely invested in the book.  Kellie and Brian had terrific chemistry, and in a world as superficial as the one they lived in, it felt like it was built on something more substantial than their impossibly good looks.

At the beginning of chapter twenty-five, there is a considerable editing error.  I’m not sure what happened, I can only guess that a section got highlighted and deleted, but once sentence skips ahead to a completely different setting and situation.  There were also a handful of other editorial issues that need to be addressed.  I also found the name dropping, obsession with brand-names, and excessive descriptions of items tedious and unnecessary.

When her nose isn’t buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she’s in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four-inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It’s a good thing her characters do what she says because even her Labrador doesn’t listen to her…

Hollywood Playboy by Natasha Madison ~ Sarah A’s Review

Jessica

An entertainment journalist was the last thing I thought I would be doing.

I thought once I got my degree, I would be reporting on stories that made a difference, but now all I do is report on who broke up with who and who is dating who.

I was over it.

Then I got my next assignment.

He’s Hollywood’s bad boy.

He works hard, and he plays even harder.

He’s rude, he’s condescending, and he’s made it known he doesn’t want me on the tour.

With one month on the road with him, two things might happen

One, I may never work in this industry again.

Two, I may just be like everyone else and fall for Hollywood’s Playboy.

Hollywood Playboy was a mixed bag, for me. The parts that I loved I loved immensely. The parts that didn’t work for me really felt laggy. In the end, the good far outweighed the bad, and I enjoyed the overall story. Jessica and Tyler were an interesting, if unlikely, couple and I felt they were going to be able to weather life’s storms together.

Hollywood Playboy was kind of an enemies-to-lovers romance, though I never quite bought the enemies side of their relationship. It felt a little forced, and the reasoning behind their disdain didn’t quite ring true for me – at the very least it didn’t seem like they had any reason to hate each other beyond why any famous person and Hollywood reporter would hate one another. I kept waiting for a big reveal to explain their animosity to no avail. I was exceedingly happy when they finally dropped that façade and began to treat one another with respect and interest, that was MUCH easier for me to buy into.

My favorite part of Hollywood Playboy was the secrecy in which they developed their relationship. I think that keeping things between the two of them helped Jessica and Tyler learn to trust one another and keep things real in the midst of a world that is often manipulative and fake. When they were in the little cocoon of their relationship their chemistry and connection was intense and satisfying. I loved that Ms. Madison added scenes with Tyler’s parents and the ways they showed their love for one another, then mirrored it later in Tyler and Jessica’s relationship because it made it feel more powerful and real.

I struggled with the first third of this book really dragged. There was a lot of information that didn’t add to the story in any way, and I found myself getting increasingly annoyed with how superficial the characters all seemed to be. I attributed that to the excessive name brand usage and unnecessary descriptions of every. Single. Article. Of clothing, every character in the book was wearing. It got repetitive and felt very inelegant.
