Release Day Blitz ~ Broken Girl by Gretchen de la O

BG_FBCover [523437]

BrokenGirl_FrontCover_LoRes [523442]My name is ROSE NEWTON, and I sell my body on the streets of San Francisco. I’m what you call society’s dirty little secret. On the outside, I’m in control, the woman who makes her own rules and gives nothing away for free. Inside, I’m broken and numb. Torn and shattered by my past, my life is nothing more than the lost fragments of what’s left of me.

SHANE WEST represents everything that’s foreign to me. He’s brave, kind, funny, gorgeous and persistent. When fate brings us face to face, an undeniable attraction blazes between us. He becomes the constant I’ve never had and the only man I’ll ever trust.

There is nothing simple about falling in love when you’re keeping a secret like mine.

I was honored to be able to have an early copy of Broken Girl entrusted to me by Gretchen de la O; it was truly a privilege.

Broken Girl was a very unique book.  By just read the synopsis you may think that you know how it is all going to end, maybe even think it’s a familiar trope.  I assure you, you’re mistaken.  I went into this book believing I knew exactly what I was getting myself into; I didn’t.  It was so much more than I could have anticipated.  More than I could have asked for.

The characters: Shane, Rose, Sybil, and Kean, were all brilliantly written.  Broken Girl is written in dual POV, and both Shane and Rose had very distinct voices.  Too often only the perspective from which we are witnessing the story changes, however, Gretchen de la O was able to encompass fully the feelings of the characters in the words and phrasing she used for each character; this is nothing compared to the deep intensity of each character’s personality.  I felt completely immersed in each of their lives and was left with the desire to know more about each and every one of them.  To delve into each past, to know every facet of their beings.  For me, having that desire to know more than could possibly be fit in the pages of a novel is the sign of a well-written character.

Gretchen de la O starts this book running. The initial scene is so dark, so intense; it sets the tone for the rest of it.  I was impressed that she never let up with that level of intensity.  Even in the lighter moments there is an undercurrent that is waiting to pull you straight back into the darkness.  It is a rare thing for me to not figure out the twists in a book, and I was positive I saw the direction Broken Girl was heading.  I was so wrong; the book took turns I never saw coming.  It kept me on my toes and was a completely exhilarating ride.

Ms. de la O did a remarkable job with this novel.  There is a level of passion written into the pages that is completely palpable.  She was so loyal to each character and the intricacies of their personalities it was a breath of fresh air.  There were plenty of time where she could have taken the easy route and made this a flowery love story, but she kept on the dark and twisting road that was true to her characters, and I am a little bit in love with her for doing that.

I was really good at acting. I learned early on, a prostitute couldn’t sell her body without the ability to turn on the dramatics. There was something to be said about hooking up every couple of weeks with the same trick and making it seem new. It was my job to make them think what they did to me was the most mind-blowing sex I’d ever experienced and, well, I was pretty damn good at my job.

I had to be stronger than any simple desire to feel worthy of something beyond numb. I knew what was going to happen when I’d truly let him in; things were gonna get complicated, fast. Shuffling my feelings around in my mind for Shane was as fucked up as being beaten simply because I was born. Nothing in this world had convinced me that if I slid that thin blade of emotion against my flesh I’d feel whole again. No love, no desire would ever be worthy of that searing pain.

I pulled my legs up under my ass and curled up on the couch. Tears I hadn’t let go of since I sold my heart to the loveless fuck who took my soul and crushed it, fell fast and swirled from my chin before they soaked into the front of my camisole. I cried. My eyes burned with the sting of every time I thought about all the mindless, sick fucks who stole pieces of my life and never returned them. My controlled aching whimpers turned into uncontrollable belly deep howls as my entire life busted from the vault in my heart.

I didn’t stop crying, not even when my voice was gone and my throat begged me to feel the burn of tequila. And even though I lived through the horrors of alcoholism with my parents, it didn’t keep me from knocking back the entire bottle of that golden poison. I welcomed the warm burn against the back of my throat as the scorching pressure pushed at my lungs and the tequila blazed down into my stomach in waves of gut rotting satisfaction, finally I felt something before I had become ragingly numb.

Time is bending my trust, breaking me before he brushes the back of his fingers against my lips. His touch startles me at first, but tracing his fingers on the outside curve of my lower lip soothes me.

“What if I can’t trust?” I ask in a hushed whisper.

“You can,” he answers, dragging his fingers along the outline of my jaw and down across my collarbone.

“What if it’s not in me?” I ask, still blindfolded and feet tangle in the sheet.

“You have everything you’ll ever need, right here.” he answers rubbing the tips of his fingers in circles between my breasts. My heart reaches for his touch as it leaps and crashes against my chest.

“You don’t understand, Mister, I need to have a sense of control.”

“Rosebud, control is an illusion, it’s a decision to trust a certain outcome. All you have to do is trust me and you’ll have all the control you need.”

I want his words to soothe me, and his calm, direct voice to caress the strength within me cowering at letting go of my scars. I want to trust him. I crave to taste the freedom he wants to give me. I want him to save me from a future tucked under cracked sidewalks, cold gutters and from ever having to fuck another man for a penance. I try and convince myself that he wants to keep me off the streets.
