A Kiss to Tell by W Winters ~ RELEASE BOOST

I didn’t need anyone to tell me, I knew he was forbidden with a single glance.
He was a boy I should be afraid of and definitely a boy I should never want. No matter how much neither of those statements were true.

From the first time I saw him, Sebastian had a hard stare that pinned me in place.  And, years later, it hasn’t softened.

We lived on the same street, went to the same school, though he was a year ahead.  Even so close, he was untouchable.
He was bad news and I was the sad girl who didn’t belong.

One night changed everything.
We both had secrets.  We both saw the pain in each other’s eyes.
That gaze that gave me chills, turned to a lust-filled haze that heated every inch of me.
But that didn’t change who he was.  A man who would take everything from me.

A Kiss to Tell started out incredibly.  The story was fascinating, the characters sympathetic, and it fit into the world she’d already established in her Sinful Obsessions series. However, the end didn’t quite deliver the closure or open-ended cliffhanger I’ve come to expect from her.  I’m honestly not sure if Chloe and Sebastian’s story is meant to be complete or if I should be anticipating more from them in the future.

While I was reading A Kiss to Tell I was completely wrapped up in the story, I felt so bad for Chloe and all the things she’d suffered through in her short life; I was obsessed with Sebastian and his secrecy and his compulsion to protect Chloe.  After I finished the book, I was left a little bereft as to who the characters were outside of the intense situation they’d been living in.  I wish we’d seen them living in normalcy for just a little bit, so I would have had a better impression of who they were as people.

The plot of A Kiss to Tell was intense.  Between the flashbacks to Chloe and Sebastian’s earlier interactions and the events surrounding the night that changed Chloe’s life, Chloe’s mysterious dreams, and the sinister, yet too convenient, things happening in their town, the intrigue was high, and the questions were many.  A Kiss to Tell also gave us a glimpse of the town Carter (Merciless, Heartless) runs, and a younger, more innocent Carter, before he became the ruthless man we’ve come to know.

I wish the book had a more solid ending.  When I got to about 90%, I knew there wasn’t enough book left to wrap up all the loose ends, so I anticipated a cliffhanger. Instead, I got a half-finished book that felt rushed and incomplete.  I’m not sure if it was meant to feel that way or if the author was rushed to finish it but, at any rate, it was unsatisfying and a disservice to the strength of the rest of the story.

Experience all the feels in this unforgettable, second chance, standalone romance from #1 New York Times bestseller Lauren Blakely!

I didn’t break her heart, and she didn’t break mine — we broke each other’s.

I never stopped loving her, but time and distance played its cruel role in ripping us apart three years ago when she moved halfway around the world. Now after all those endless miles away, she’s returned . . . but I’m not the guy I was before.

Beautiful, kind, and loving, she’s the same — my hope. The only one who can make a day better, who can make me feel again with one kiss, one touch, one night.

There’s so much I have to put back in place now that I’m alone and on my own. Things I never wanted at the age of twenty-five. When I receive an unexpected letter that might hold the clues to everything I desperately need to understand about my family, I’m sure I have to follow it. But that means leaving her once more.

She says she’ll come with me, and having her by my side will unbreak my heart . . . or destroy it.

That’s the chance I have to take.

I read this book under the recommendation of someone I highly respect and I was blown away.  Unbreak My Heart wasn’t a particularly easy read.  There were a ton of difficult things that were tackled over the course of the story, and Lauren Blakely didn’t skirt around them, she faced them head-on and made her readers experience the raw pain and emotion her characters went through.

Unbreak My Heart ran me through the gamut of emotions.  Andrew’s journey was arduous and the depth and breadth of emotions he went through while figuring out how to heal – how to love and live again – was richly portrayed throughout the book.  Each new revelation, good and bad, brought on a new slew of feelings and Ms. Blakely did a fantastic job of representing the intensity of dealing with grief and trying to find answers that seem too big for one person to deal with.

I loved the outlet and support Holland was for Andrew.  He needed her strength and understanding to make it through some of the hardest moments of his life.  She also provided him a place to go when no one else wanted to talk about the things he’d lost, the things he had to deal with, the fact he no longer had the biggest part of his support system.  And Holland did all of that without letting him become too reliant on her; she made him stand on his own two feet while lending a helping hand when he most needed it.

Second-chance romances are one of my favorite tropes to read; Unbreak My Heart was that and more.  I especially loved that there was no hurtful breakup in Holland and Andrew’s past, there was no emotional baggage they had to overcome regarding their relationship.  Their history and connection were obvious and intense.  I also appreciated that their original coupling was a friends-to-lovers romance because it gave them another layer of foundation to build a future on.  Theirs was such a robust and fated connection; I could feel the love they had bleeding through the pages.

I’ve long heard great things about Lauren Blakely, but since rom-coms aren’t my thing I hadn’t read her.  When I found out this book was heavier and more tragic, I knew I had to take my chance, and I was not disappointed.  I loved her writing style, it felt unique yet still comfortable, almost as if the characters were relaying their story to a friend, rather than narrating their lives.  It was refreshing and fun.  I hope Ms. Blakely writes more novels outside of the rom-com genre, as this book shows she has a great talent for it.

~Andrew~

She inches her hand across the counter just a little bit closer, and that hand, I want to grab it and hold on. I glance at our fingers, so close all it would take is one of us giving an inch.

Give. Take. Come. Stay.

I can feel the warmth from her hand. One stretch for us to reconnect, so I wait. Wait for her to put her hands on my face and press her lips against mine and kiss me like it’s been killing her not to.

But I can’t wait.

I break first, saying her name in a lonely, desperate rasp. “Holland.”

“Andrew.” Her voice is a whisper.

“Go with me,” I blurt out.

She blinks. “What?”

I shake my head.

Leaving the kitchen, I stalk to the living room, pacing like I can sort out what to do if I get just a few feet away from her.

She’s right behind me, her hand on my arm. “Say it again.”

I swivel around, and with her blue eyes on mine, her body close, I break to pieces. With her, my heart beats too fast, my blood pumps too quickly. I have no will to tell her to stop being so near to me but not near enough to make everything better.

“Say what again?” I ask, as if I’ve forgotten.

“Ask me,” she presses.

And she wins. She fucking wins. “Go with me. Come with me.”

She squeezes my arm. “Is that what you want?’

I cup her cheeks. She gasps. I’ve shocked her. Let’s shock her some more.

Her lips part, and she whispers my name. “Andrew.”

It’s like the stars are glowing. Like the sky is blazing at night. “You know what I want.”

Fans of Hallmark movies and sweet stories of first love will adore Callie Henry’s new series!

High-schooler, Hannah, has always been self-conscious about her weight, so when hottie swimmer, Liam, pays her extra attention at her sister’s wedding, she has a hard time trusting his interest. Throughout the evening, Liam’s charm wins her over, until they’re falling hard for each other. But the next day, Hannah learns something that may ruin it all.

I love YA; I feel like young adult books often have a stronger voice on social issues and all the things we as adults are often scared to talk about. A Date for Hannah touched on a couple of those issues gracefully, and I was impressed by Kary Regnery’s – writing as Callie Henry – foray into YA. This was quite a short book, I don’t have a word count, but I’d venture to guess it’s novella length and was a fun way to lose myself for an hour or so.

A Date for Hannah was such a sweet YA romance, one that is appropriate for teenagers and sends a fantastic message to girls who live in a society where everyone is telling them boys only like skinny, modelesque figures. Hannah struggled with seeing herself as anything but ‘the fat girl,’ but there was an entire world of people who saw her beauty, appreciated her for her curves, and knew that what was actually important went beyond skin deep.

Hannah was guarded; life had taught her – in myriad ways – to be leery of people and love. It showed her that kids could be cruel, love isn’t always true, and adults sometimes project their issues onto innocent children. Liam, while he had every reason to be the same way, was much more open and vulnerable. He had precisely the demeanor and patience Hannah needed to learn to accept herself, flaws and all, and start dismantling the walls she’d built around herself. They were adorable together, and he was so good for and to her, while she had the kindness and compassion he needed to see he was more than a product of his worst choices. I loved the way they were together.

My only wish for this book is that it had been longer, dug a little deeper. I have a pretty high bar set for YA, and A Date for Hannah skimmed that bar with its fingertips but didn’t quite reach it. Had it delved a little deeper into Hannah’s body image issues, Liam’s past, and really captured the circumstances and fallout of those issues this book could have been a spectacular novel.

WHAT!? I.. GAH! I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself until Breathless comes out. That was quite the twist at the end of Heartless, and I was left with my heart in my throat. I have no idea what anything means or who is on what side or who I want to come out on top. I was so wrapped up in the intensity of this story; I didn’t even realize I was closing in on the end until there were no pages left to turn.

I’m gonna be really honest here; I’m still really unsure how I feel about Aria and Carter. I feel guilty for loving them together since their started relationship is completely out of a hostage situation. This series is so reminiscent of CJ Roberts’ Dark Duet, and my heart is just as torn about both couples. I love every second they’re together, to the point I almost forget the circumstances Aria is living under, then when Aria is alone my heart breaks for her, and all I want is for her to be able to flee. I’m so torn, so confused, so desperate for an easy answer but I don’t think there will ever be one. I am in knots over this book and I don’t anticipate them loosening for a long time.

Between the power exchange between Aria and Carter, the war, her feelings and anticipation of what is going to happen to her family, and the feelings they’re both starting to develop, the tension was sky-high in this novel. Every single interaction between all of the characters felt charged, ready to explode. There were so many things they all wanted needed to say, but couldn’t; it felt as if there was an entire second story being told in the undercurrent of body language and glances. It was intense and fascinating how Ms. Winters was able to convey that feeling so clearly without making it awkward and obvious.

Heartless was exceptional, from the moment it picked up right where Merciless had ended until it left me reeling with that shocking ending, there wasn’t a moment’s rest for the reader. Everything about the book was so heightened because the situation is so extreme, and Ms. Winters did an excellent job of keeping the anticipation ramped up to a fever point throughout the entirety of the book. It’s going to be a while before I’m going to be able to fully come to terms with everything that has happened to Aria and Carter and decide exactly how I feel about their twisted story.

Heartless is the second book in W. Winters’ Merciless Saga. These books are not standalones and must be read in order, with each book picking up right where the previous one ended. We were first introduced to the world of Merciless in Little Liar and Possessive, but those books do not need to be read for comprehension of this series. Heartless is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Aria and Carter.

Willow Winters continues to impress me with her highly artistic romantic suspense novels. I appreciate the flow of her work and how even the more aggressive, action-packed scenes have a certain grace and fluidity to them most suspense novels don’t. I find myself both desperate to find out how her books will end and not wanting them to be over because her prose is so beautiful I don’t want to leave her words.

“Hey, you know what? You didn’t let me finish my pitch before, when I asked you to go on a date with me.”

She sighed, her eyes losing a little brightness and her smile dimming as she turned away to look at the reception guests on the dance floor. He tilted his head to see her better, and though he didn’t know her well enough to read her expression with accuracy, he saw wariness as her eyebrows knitted together. But when she sucked her lower lip into her mouth, he perceived a little bit of longing too, which made him press his advantage.

“Didn’t you wonder how I knew all that Shakespeare stuff?” he asked.

“Yes, actually,” she said, looking surprised by his question. “Come to think of it, I did wonder, but then you distracted me.”

He grinned. “Good distraction, right?”

She rolled her eyes, but her lips tilted up a little, which made him happy. “You were saying?”

“The OSF is twenty minutes from my house. I worked there taking tickets over spring break last year. So, if you’d like to go with me sometime—as a date—I might even be able to take you backstage. I’m sure Julia would give us a tour of the Allen Elizabethan Theatre.”

“Julia?” said Hannah, raising an eyebrow.

He saw it in her eyes, the way she was mentally backing away from him at the mere mention of another woman. Is that how she saw all men? As players? As someone who’d hurt her and cheat on her if she let her guard down? He couldn’t help the way his feelings for her surged as he watched her—how much he wanted to be the person to prove to her that she could give her heart to someone who would keep it safe.

Julia is my Mom’s friend who works in group sales, is married, and has two kids.” He pulled Hannah’s hand behind his back, holding it hostage and drawing her closer until her chest pressed against his. “And to be clear? I wouldn’t ask you out if I was seeing someone else. I don’t do that. I’m not with anyone right now, Hannah … except you.”

She flinched, and her face went utterly blank, except for her eyes, which looked worried and uncomfortable.

“You’re not with me,” she said softly, loosening her hand from his grasp and stepping away from him.

“I didn’t mean—”

“I have to use the ladies’ room. I’ll find you in a little bit, okay?

She turned and started walking away, while he babbled incoherently at her back:

“Wait. Hannah! No. I didn’t…I just—I just meant…Crap!”

He stopped talking when she was out of sight.

Dang it, Liam! Why do you have to be so freaking intense?

Probably because it bothered him that she kept trying to friend-zone him when he didn’t feel friendly toward her and pretty much hadn’t from the moment he’d laid eyes on her.

There were some girls he met—especially the shallow, self-absorbed ones—who turned him off the moment he met them. Most of the popular girls at his high school thought he was trouble, and even after he’d straightened himself out, they didn’t give him a chance. Not really. They’d fool around with him at a party—there was never a shortage of popular girls who wanted to make out with a bad boy—but on Monday morning, they’d act like they were too drunk to remember kissing him. And it sort of sucked, because Liam Callahan was one of those guys who quietly longed for a girlfriend, even though his reputation had pegged him inaccurately as a player.

He wanted to date someone. He wanted to leave a party with her on Saturday night, and hold her hand when he walked into school on Monday morning. He wanted to be the first person she texted when she was happy or upset about something. He wanted to invite her over for dinner with his mom. He wanted to introduce her to his friends:

You guys, this is my girlfriend.

He’d imagined saying those words about a thousand times, but he’d never had the chance to say them, and it bothered him. A lot.

But tonight? Meeting Hannah? Somehow it felt like maybe what he wanted was actually, finally, possible.

When Hannah looked up at him with those huge, vulnerable, dark brown eyes, he felt hopeful.

“Damn it,” he growled softly, frustrated that he’d pushed her too hard.

Maybe he was being pushy, but he liked her, and for all he knew, she was driving back up to Brookings in the morning. He wanted her to say yes to a date—his heart needed to know that he’d see her again.

Willow started writing after having her little girl, Evie, December 2015. All during her pregnancy with Evie she continued to read and she only wanted to read romance. She was reading a book a day — sometimes two.

In January 2016 Willow was staying up late with Evie and just thinking of all these stories. They came to her constantly so she finally sat down and just started writing. She always wanted to do it so she figured, why not? Today Willow cannot be happier for making that decision!

The Surviving Trace by Calia Read ~ Sarah A’s Review

Will is my fiancé. The shy man I met years ago in college. The person I’m supposed to spend the rest of my life with.

This is the life I’ve always wanted until finding a picture of four men changes everything…

Etienne says he’s my husband and the year is 1912. He can’t stand the sight of me, but I don’t know why.

Oh, and he’s one of the men from the picture.

I’ve done the impossible and have become trapped in time and I know Etienne is my key to going home.

The more time I spend with Etienne, the further I fall for him, until I’m questioning which time I belong in and if the life I left behind is the one I truly desire.

All I know for certain is I need to survive time.

I need to survive love.

And I need to make it out on the other side alive.

I love Calia Read, I’ve read everything she’s published. When I saw the cover for this book, I was enamored; it’s so freaking beautiful. However, when I read the synopsis, I wasn’t sold. Time travel? Not my thing. So, I took a step back and thought about it for a minute, I knew Calia wouldn’t lead me astray, and I threw myself into this book full steam ahead; such a great decision. The Surviving Trace was wonderful and different than anything else I’ve ever read.

The world building in this novel was phenomenal. I felt as if I’d been plucked right out of my living room and dropped into early 2oth century Charleston. Calia Read did an amazing job of capturing the feeling of a world before our time and how it would feel to suddenly be transplanted to a world without all the modern conveniences we enjoy. I loved how intensely Serene initially rebelled against her new life and how she slowly became more comfortable in 1912 Charleston than she was in her own time.

Étienne had a certain je ne sais quoi. Even when he was hard-headed and obtuse, there was something about him that was intensely enchanting. Getting past his gruff exterior to the center of who he was: a wonderfully compassionate, understanding, sensitive man. He was the perfect foil to Serene’s hugely colorful and outspoken persona. When they were together the electricity between them was palpable, and their dynamic was so entertaining. I was obsessed with how they knew how to push each other to the brink, then back with a single look.

I was completely enraptured with The Surviving Trace from the first page. The plot was insane; it had to be for it to work as sublimely as it did. I particularly loved how this whole thing started with an old photograph found at a flea market. That something so seemingly inconsequential could forever change the world was everything. It made this story feel so much bigger than a book. From there Serene herself said it best, ‘Nothing is impossible, and everything is a lie.’ I never knew what to expect because this story was so wholly unlike anything I’ve ever read. It was an entirely new and unique reading experience for me, and I can’t wait for more of it.

My biggest wish for this would be a correction to the timeline in 1912. I’m not going to delineate the entire timeline here, because it would spoil certain parts of the book, but there are about 12 weeks (3 months) accounted for, yet only two months pass. In a book about time travel, the dates that we get are very important, so it was a little frustrating. There were also several editorial mistakes: misspelled words, typos, incorrect usage of apostrophes, that need some attention.

The Surviving Trace is the first book in Calia Read’s Surviving Time series. This is a continuous storyline, involving the same primary characters and the books will have to be read to understand their story. The Surviving Trace is written in first-person perspective; most chapters are narrated by Serene with a few in Étienne’s point-of-view.

I first discovered Calia Read several years ago, I’ve reread her Sloan Brothers series a few times, and her Fairfax series is one of the most well-written looks into mental health I’ve read. Figure Eight was literary perfection in the way it made me feel like I was losing my grip on reality just as surely as Selah was. Ms. Read is a master of placing me firmly in the middle of the worlds she’s built, to the point it feels like I have a hard time discerning my reality from the fiction she’s woven.

“You have questions,” I say flatly.

“If the roles were reversed, what would you do?”

I glance at him from the corner of my eye. “I’d be demanding answers to the thousands of questions running through my head.”

“Exactly.”

“So ask,” I say slowly. “But don’t stare. The people around us are doing enough of that.”

“Let me tell you a well-known fact about yourself, Mrs. Lacroix. You and I are hardly ever seen in public together, and the times we are, we barely look at each other.”

“Should I push away from you and tell you I hate you?” I ask innocently.

He snorts and, still staring straight ahead, the smallest of smirks graces his face. “It might make me feel better.”

A beat of silence passes by.

“I have a question.”

Étienne lifts a brow.

“When was the last time you were seen with… her?”

He goes silent for a few seconds. “Two months ago?”

“Good Lord. Why are you two even married?” I blurt before I can think twice. Almost immediately, I want to take the words back, but it isn’t as if Étienne cares.

He remains stoic as ever and shrugs a shoulder. “I ask myself that every day.”

His words spark a series of new questions. I have to remind myself I need to pace myself and not ask everything all at once.

“Also, it may benefit you to know that people might be starin’ because you’re walkin’ down the street in the middle of the day.”

My head whips in his direction. “Did your wife break one of her legs or something?”

Étienne gives a hearty laugh. It’s loud enough to earn the stares of people walking past us and powerful enough to make my heart speed up. God, when he smiles, it’s something else.

“No, not at all,” he eventually replies. “People of wealth don’t walk unless it’s necessary. They take cars or horse and buggy. In fact, you see the buggy across the street?”

I crane my neck and see a buggy with a pale face staring out the back window. After the woman inside sees me staring at her, she moves away from the window. “Yeah?”

“That’s Lailah, one of your dearest friends. She probably thinks you’re gravely ill and have no idea what you’re doing right now, walkin’ down the street. I’m sure she’ll make a call to the house to see if you’re all right.”

“I can’t wait,” I say, deadpan.

Étienne stares at me with his brows furrowed as if I’m a puzzle he’s painstakingly putting together and he can’t seem to find all the pieces. I clear my throat and look away. The way he’s watching at me is unnerving.

The two of us become silent again. Fine with me; my eyes are drawn to the window display to my right. I slow down and watch as two women walk into the general store. There are handwritten signs in the window, and I stop long enough to read them. Coffee is only fifteen cents a pound, and eggs? They’re fourteen cents for a dozen. Another sign promotes a new toothpaste. The most prominent sign is for Coca-Cola that says, “Relieves fatigue. Drink Coca-Cola.” In a smaller font beneath, it says it’s sold everywhere for only five cents.

Cupping my hands over my eyes, I press my forehead against the window pane and peer inside. I can’t help myself. A huge part of me wants to go inside, but if I did, I wouldn’t be content until I’d looked at each item. This is the second-best thing.

“Serene? Are you coming?”

I turn and see Étienne impatiently waiting a few steps ahead. Reluctantly, I look away from the display and walk toward him.

“What was so fascinating?”

“I was looking at the display.”

“You don’t have Coca-Cola in your time?” he asks.

“Oh, we do. Just not for five cents.”

“How much?”

My eyes slide to Étienne; he stares at me with open curiosity.

“I don’t know how much a single bottle is,” I confess. “I usually buy a twelve-pack, and that’s about four dollars?”

For once, it’s Étienne’s turn to look shocked. I smile because I recognize the hunger in his eyes. He has thousands of questions that demand answers.

He opens his mouth and idly looks to his left before he does a double-take and abruptly stops and gestures to the door next to him. “Here we are.”

We stop in front of a door with textured glass. Embossed on the spotless, large window are the words E.A.L. Corporation.

“Obviously you remember where I work from the last time you were here,” he remarks dryly.

I nod. “I thought your family owned a shipping company?”

“We do. Livingston works in the main office near the docks. I started my own company three years ago strictly for investments and real estate ventures.”

“Are you any good at what you do?” I challenge.

Would I typically be this blunt? No. But things between Étienne and me didn’t change overnight. I see the mistrust in his eyes. When he looks at me, he still sees his bitchy wife. And that’s okay, because I have a fiancé back home, waiting for me. Being polite is a pretense that neither one of us wants to use right now. Saying precisely what’s on my mind is a bit liberating.

“I like to think that I’m mildly successful at investing.”

I narrow my eyes at him. He’s being modest, and I don’t know why.

Étienne goes to open the door. I place my hand on his arm, stopping him in his tracks. He looks at my hand, then my face with curiously.

“Before we go in, I wanted to talk to you about something.” He says nothing, just stares at me with those whip-smart eyes. I take a deep breath and drop my hand to my side. “I can’t be like her all the time.”

“How so?”

“Oh, come on, you’re not blind. You saw how people were staring at us! It’s obvious that the two of you can’t stand the sight of each other.”

He reluctantly says, “Yes.”

“I know it’s probably in my best interest to keep up appearances, but I have no desire to go out of my way to be extra bitchy to you. I hope that means you won’t be a huge asshole to me.”

“Extra bitchy… has anyone told you that you have an amazing way with words?”

“I’m serious.”

His eyes rake me from head to toe in that ruthless, cut-throat way of his. “You understand that a decision like that will make people talk. Some might think we’re… happy.”

“Let them talk.” I shrug. “I want to go home. And I know you’re the key. Consider me your new shadow. Where you go, so do I.”

Étienne looks at me for a moment longer before he nods. “Very well. We shall be kind to each other from here on out.”

I hold out my hand. “Let’s shake on it.”

He stares at my hand warily before his hand curves around mine.

It would be cliché to say that the minute our hands connected, I became frozen in place or a shock of awareness rushed through me. But something did happen and it was none of those things. It started with a small twist in my gut that traveled up my body, grazed the delicate edges of my heart before it seized it all together. The feeling came out of nowhere. I look at our connected hands. His is large and calloused, swallowing mine whole. As tall as I am, dainty isn’t exactly the first word I’d use to describe myself, but that’s how I feel right now. I jerk my hand back.

Étienne’s hard and unyielding face makes it impossible to tell if he felt the same way. He clears his throat and wordlessly holds the door open for me.
