For as many heartbreaking moments in this book, there were five times as many beautifully touching instances to make up for them. Each Devney Perry book I read is sublime, and I would be hard-pressed to tell which my favorite was as they each have touched me deeply in their own ways. Timid delivered everything I’ve come to expect from Ms. Perry and more.

After reading Tattered, I knew Willa and Jackson’s story was going to be phenomenal, and it delivered more than I could have ever anticipated. They were such polar opposites in almost every way I was expecting a highly angsty story – and we did get moments of that – but I was so happy that Timid focused more on building up their relationship and Willa and Jackson coming into their own. Their connection was so strong from the first moments they spent alone together; there was never any doubt in my mind they belonged to one another.

Willa surprised me, especially after what we’d seen of her in Tattered, she’d been so insecure and quiet I wasn’t sure if it was a result of her surroundings or the whole of her personality. Watching her evolve from that shy, nervous girl to the person she was by the end of Timid was sublime. She’d shown flashes of who she could be in the beginning, but once she fully came into her own.

Jackson had called to me in Tattered since we learned parts of his story through Thea I knew whatever he projected to the world was to hide the broken boy who lived inside him. Willa saw that and knew he was more than anyone gave him credit for, then helped him to discover the man she already knew she was. His growth arc in this book was phenomenal, and he proved himself to be everything Willa thought he was and everything she deserved.

Timid is the second book in Devney Perry’s Lark Cove series. These books are interconnected standalones and can be read independently. The timelines crossed over a little, and if you’re reading the entire series, Tattered should be read first. Timid is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Willa and Jackson.

Devney Perry has yet to let me down with her books. They all pack an emotional punch and deliver sweeping love stories with fascinating characters and great growth arcs. Her writing is always spot-on and consuming. I love how she takes popular romance tropes and puts her own spin on them to make them feel entirely new and unique.

I scooched my chair in toward the table, trying to put a little more space between Jackson and me, but he wasn’t having it.

He put both hands on the back of my chair, then leaned in close. “Hi, Willa.”

“Uh . . . hi.” I shivered at the heat from his chest on my bare shoulders.

Why was he standing so close? My parents were right there. Our table was one of four tall, square ones in the center of the room and there was plenty of space between tables.

Plenty. P-L-E-N-T-Y.

But was Jackson using any of that plentiful space?

No sirree. He stayed pressed against the back of my chair, like there were only three inches of usable space behind him, not three feet.

My skin prickled he was so close. I tried to nudge my chair forward again but it barely moved. Sweat beaded on my temples and I pulled in a shaking breath.

Jackson’s woodsy, rich scent was everywhere. It overpowered the stale beer, pizza and peanuts, and I inhaled a deep breath, unable to resist.

Sexy Hot Forest. That’s what they’d call his cologne.

Freakin’-A, man. Devney Perry knows how to deliver a fantastic story. Tattered had me in knots, completely obsessed with finishing the book, while never wanting it to end. While it may not have surpassed The Birthday List as my favorite book by her, it comes in a close second. Thea and Logan’s story was sublime and just completely sated a need in my heart for a therapeutic romance I didn’t know was there.

Tattered hit on a some of my favorite tropes, rich-poor, surprise-child, family-by-love-not-blood, and did it beautifully. I can’t express how masterfully Ms. Perry constructed this story and made several moving parts, not all harmonious, work together and create such a poignant tale of love and healing. Thea’s story, in particular, ripped my heart to pieces, but in true Devney Perry style, she knit those pieces back together and made my simultaneously more compassionate and more resilient.

Thea was everything. She may have come from less than nothing, but her strength, her drive, her fierce love and protection for those she loved made her worth more than anyone she encountered – maybe not Hazel, that woman was amazing, too. I loved that she never allowed anything to come before her and her daughter’s needs and happiness. She knew herself well enough and had fought hard enough in her life, to know loving herself was the key to making all the other parts of her life work. She was phenomenal.

Logan surprised me. From the beginning of the story, he was completely different than I had expected, better. Even when he was being obtuse and planning a life he hadn’t consulted Thea about, there was still something charming and compassionate about his choices. I appreciated that he was able to identify when he’d done something wrong and took steps to rectify those poor choices. Most of all, I loved how completely devoted he was to Charlie (their daughter) as soon as he found out about her.

Tattered is the first book in Devney Perry’s Lark Cove series. These books are interconnected standalones and will not need to be read in order for continuity, but honestly, if you read Devney Perry’s work, you’re going to want to read them all. Tattered is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Thea and Logan.

Devney Perry is proving herself to be the master of emotionally charged, put-my-heart-through-a-blender stories. She has an impeccable style that lends well to the type of powerful storylines and can deliver wonderful healing arcs for her characters with ease. Every time I pick up one of her books I am more impressed with how gifted a wordsmith she is, and I’m in awe of her skill.

He stared at me for a long moment. “You’re sure she’s mine?”

“She’s yours.”

“Then that’s good enough.”

“I—really?” I blinked. He didn’t want to verify paternity? He just . . . trusted me?

He nodded. “Really.”

“I swear, I tried to find you, Logan. On my life, I swear it. But the hotel wouldn’t give me your name no matter how much I begged. And you paid cash for your drinks and never mentioned your last name. I tried, but I just . . . didn’t know where to start.”

“It’s not your fault. I believe you.”

The sincerity in his voice made my throat burn. Goddamn it. I was going to cry.

I’d worked so hard not to cry today. I’d fought to keep my emotions in check and my head from spinning out of control. But this was going to make me break.

I wanted so badly for Logan to believe that I hadn’t kept Charlie from him intentionally. The fact that a man like him would trust someone like me without proof meant more than he’d ever know.

“Thank you,” I choked out past the lump in my throat.

“So, um, is Charlie inside with your husband? Or boyfriend?”

The urge to cry disappeared and I barked out a laugh. “Smooth.”

He chuckled. “It’s been a long day for me. Give me a break, will you? This morning I was in New York, then I came to Montana for a business meeting and discovered a daughter. I’m off my game.”

Thea and I had agreed on just one night. One incredible night. The next morning, we’d walked away from each other with no strings attached. She’d gone back to her life. I’d gone back to my hectic work and social schedule, just glad that I’d had the chance to meet her.

What I hadn’t expected was for Thea to pop into my thoughts so often after that night. I’d think of her smile whenever I was at a hotel bar. I’d think of her laugh when I was at a boring fundraiser. I’d think of her whenever I saw a woman with long, sleek dark hair.

After months of her on my mind, I’d finally given in. I’d gone back to the bar to see her one more time.

Except she’d been gone.

With my child.

I’d waited too long.

“Yes!” My arms shot in the air. I punched the air a couple of times before clapping and shouting, “Way to go, Charlie! Nice save!”

I was so damn proud. I hoped she could hear me yelling. Her success felt better than any I’d ever had personally, and I’d known her for just a couple days.

Parental pride was incredible.

And I wasn’t alone in my feelings. When I stopped cheering for my daughter, I looked to my side to see that Thea had gotten off the blanket and was cheering too. Her smile was beaming, brighter than any I’d seen before.

“Couldn’t stay seated?” I nudged her elbow with mine.

“Quiet, gorgeous.”

Gorgeous.

I’d been given nicknames in the past by women. My girlfriend in high school had called me Lo-Lo. Emmeline used to call me darling. Alice had annoyed the fuck out of me by whispering stud in my ear. I hadn’t really liked any of them, not even Emmeline’s.

But Thea’s gorgeous was hot as hell.

Mostly because she said it with that smile.

She could call me an asshole or a douchebag with that smile and I wouldn’t care.

The Birthday List by Devney Perry ~ Sarah A’s Review

Happily married to her college sweetheart, Poppy lived a blessed life with the husband of her dreams. Then everything changed. She is no longer a wife. She is no longer the envy of her single friends. Now, people look at her with pity as they whisper a single word behind her back.

Widow.

Years after her husband’s tragic death, years of pain and sorrow and wishing for the life she’ll never get back, Poppy decides to finish Jamie’s birthday list. She’ll do the things he wanted to most. Because maybe, just maybe, if she can complete his list, she can start to live again.

Poppy expects going through the birthday list will be hard. She expects it to hurt. But what she doesn’t expect is Cole. Could the man who delivered the news of her husband’s death and shattered her heart be the one to help her put it back together again?

Amazon US | B&N | iBooks | Kobo

Forgive me if this review is incoherent or blabbers on, I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning reading it and am operating on very little sleep. Totally worth it, though. Poppy’s story started in the most heartbreaking way possible, I can’t even begin to imagine living without my husband, but her journey to healing and accepting the past for what it was was heartwarming and full of all kinds of wonderful love.

The Birthday List is a standalone novel; there are no cameos from previous novels. I would LOVE to see more books set in this world, three characters, in particular, called to me, but the story was complete as is and left no questions regarding Poppy and Cole unanswered. The novel is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Poppy and Cole.

I hate when reviews say this is a book you have to experience for yourself because it feels like a copout, but it’s so true for this novel. I will never be able to convey all the emotions and the intensity of learning to love again after such a great loss properly. Poppy’s chapters, in particular, felt so raw, like she was an exposed nerve and she had no idea what was going to tip her to the point she could no longer control her responses. I loved how Devney Perry showed her healing through those unexpected triggers and reactions, and how Poppy learned how and why she was finally moving forward.

Cole was perfection; seriously, if I were ever to end up in the same situation as Poppy, I could only hope to meet someone as kind, patient, and understanding as he was. From the moment he appeared in the dojo I knew he was wonderful, he had a gentleness not a lot of romance heroes have. His tender nature was exactly what Poppy needed and, instead of making him feel less manly compared to his alpha-male counterparts, made his masculinity even more pronounced as he didn’t have to be hard and demanding to demonstrate how strong and steady his love was.

This is where I would usually tell you my wishes for this book, however, I wouldn’t change a thing. So, I’m going to tell you one of the things I had anticipated but was thankful didn’t come to fruition instead. I was worried about having to recap Poppy and Jamie’s relationship and fall in love with him, only for him to die and have to move on to a new guy. Thankfully, with only a few anecdotes we got to know enough about his and Poppy’s relationship without going into too many details about their love story. It saved my heart a little pain and suffering.

Devney Perry won me over with her Jamison Valley series and more firmly cemented herself on my list of heartstring-playing authors with this book. I love her style and how effortlessly she’s able to embody each characters’ voice, making their chapters feel separate and unique. I hope she decides to write more books in this world, but if she doesn’t, I’ll happily read anything else she writes.

Turning to the door, I smiled, ready to greet my late-evening customer, but faltered as the door closed behind him.

Cole Goodman was walking my way.

My belly dipped as I took him in. His aviator sunglasses were perched on top of his chocolate-brown hair. A black polo stretched across his broad shoulders and pulled tight across his muscled arms. His pale-blue jeans molded to his Herculean thighs before draping down to his black, square-toed boots. The leather belt on Cole’s trim waist held both a shining badge and a holstered gun.

Cole smiled and locked his light-green eyes on mine as he crossed the room.

His straight, white teeth made my breath hitch—something that had happened last night more times than I wanted to admit.

Molly, who had turned around from her seat to greet our customer, spun around so her back was to Cole. Her cheeks flushed as she whispered, “Wow.”

Wow was right.

Cole Goodman was—simply put—gorgeous.

He could give a woman a speeding ticket and get a thank-you in return. He inspired women to attempt push-ups in a karate class just for the chance to watch him sweat through his gi. Cole made grown women blush like teenagers and giggle in corners, like those girls at the dojo last night.

“I hear you’re saying yes to everything today?” I chased a bite of macaroni with some water.

She nodded, smiling again as she chewed.

“A guy could take advantage of that.”

Her chewing stopped and her blue eyes snapped to mine.

“Me, for example. I could use this to get exactly what I want.”

I didn’t miss the way her eyes flared, and damn, it was sexy. If things were farther along—if this were a year from now and we were in a different place—I could have used this game to have her moaning yes all night long. But we weren’t there, and I wasn’t a complete asshole.

But I did love to tease.

“Poppy,” I whispered, leaning closer.

Her breaths were shallow as she waited.

“Will you bring me both the mixed berry and the apple pie?”

She blinked twice, then a hand flew over her mouth—still full of salad—covering it as she laughed. “Yes.”

I grinned, sitting back in my chair and digging into my food. “Maybe you can tell me more about this list too? It seems like every time I see you you’re on to something new.”

Her hand fell. “You really want to know?”

“I really want to know.”
