Author: Barbie Bohrman

Genre: Contemporary romance

About The Best Man:

Veronica Webber is single again after being in a loveless marriage way past its expiration date. For the first time in a very long time, she feels free and after being burned so badly by love in the past, any thought of romance is the last thing on her mind.

In walks a man from her past, Trevor Allen, a tall, dark, and handsome womanizer who is usually all about the bottom line. For Trevor that bottom line has always been made up of the countless notches on his bedpost. But when he sees Veronica after so many years, he can’t help but be drawn to her and know her again… even if that means being friend-zoned from the start.

As this unlikely pair spends more and more time together, they quickly realize that there might be something between them that goes past “just friends.” But there’s just one tiny detail that makes this situation slightly more complicated… Trevor was Veronica’s ex-husband’s best man at their wedding nine years ago.

So when past mistakes and indiscretions come back to haunt them, will their happily ever after end before it even gets started?

Or will the best man win this time.

Patricia’s Review

The Best Man is a light and fun read with likeable characters, witty banter, and laughter inducing text messages. This friends-to-lovers tale, hailed as a romantic comedy, was charming and enjoyable.

There was an obvious chemistry between Veronica and Trevor despite their determination to keep the relationship in the friend-zone. Watching them fight the pull was frustrating but watching them succumb to the magnetism made it worthwhile in this slow-burning romance.

I don’t generally gravitate toward rom-coms but the promise of friends-to-lovers reeled me in. Bohrman did a great job of writing organic humor that did not read like some of the simulated rom-com’s I’ve encountered in the past. There was no eye-rolling or annoyance with fabricated comedy so kudos to the author.

I enjoyed this first installment of the Allen brothers series from Bohrman and I am looking forward to the next one slated to release August 2017.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I was minutes away from punching my little brother in the face for dragging me to this hipster bar tonight. I still could not understand why he thought he needed me to help him out. Because the two women he claimed required my presence to close the deal were clueless to my standing there for the last hour. They were all about my baby brother, Max, and how he was going to help them “break into the business.”

And if “break into the business,” meant for them to have access to a local cable channel television host for a show about New York nightlife that aired so randomly, you would have a better chance of finding Waldo on your television? Then, yes, these women were most definitely on their way to breaking into the business.

Max had a way of talking me into saying yes to his misadventures in the city. To his credit, they usually paid off for me. I would smile and charm my way into a lady’s sights for a couple of hours, and eventually into her pants. And I’d had my fair share of hook-ups. But even I had to admit it got a bit mind-numbing after a while.

I wasn’t going to lie to myself or to anyone else: in layman’s terms, I loved women. I would rather be balls deep in a woman’s pussy than have my own hand wrapped around my dick any day of the week. However, the tradeoff was becoming less appealing with age.

My brother was a low-level celebrity in the city. In my opinion, he wasn’t even on the D-list. Still, women flocked to him everywhere he went, as did some of the local social media bloggers. He was young, single, and rich. The trifecta. And it earned him the nickname of Max-A-Million from the page-six gossip types. He knew about the nickname and how people used him, and he didn’t care one single fuck about it. He did whatever he wanted with whomever he wanted whenever he wanted, and damn the consequences.

I taught him well.

However much I loved my baby brother, it did not dissipate my dislike of being in this bar or the countless others like it in the city. I much preferred a quiet, reasonably lit cocktail bar with a semi-decent corporate-type crowd. I could have a couple of drinks and then, if it was a good night, go home with a beautiful woman who loved my cock as much as I did. I smiled to myself remembering the redhead from a couple of weeks ago who had sucked my dick in the cab ride back to her apartment. The next morning, she swore that she had never done something like that before in her entire life.

And I swore that I would call her.

“Do you think Indiana Jones is hot?”

Without missing a beat, Julia answers with a question. “Are we talking before or after Ally McBeal cut off his balls and slapped an earring on his ass?”

My eyes fly open and I look at her. She’s still in complete and utter repose and doesn’t seem at all caught off guard by my question.

“What are you talking about?” I ask.

“You’re asking me if Harrison Ford is hot, yes?” I mumble a yes, and then she opens her eyes and calmly says, “Well, if we’re talking about before Ally got her hands on him, yes, he was so utterly hot it was almost disgusting. But if we’re talking about after she got her grubby little paws on him and ruined it for the rest of all womankind, then no, he’s as far away from hot as you could possibly get.”

I rack my brain for a second before saying, “Before. Yes, definitely before the whole Ally thing happened to him.”

“Well, then, you know my answer. Hot, superhot.” She closes her eyes again before quickly opening one of them to look at me.

“Why are you asking me this anyway?”

“No reason.”

Ugh, I answered way too fast. And by the severely wicked smile that is now growing on Julia’s face, I know she knows that I know something that she doesn’t and won’t let up until she does.

“You dirty little liar,” she says and pulls her legs off of the coffee table. “Tell me everything.”

“There’s nothing to tell.” I pretend to look at the watch that doesn’t exist on my wrist. “Oh, would you look at that, time to get Josie and go home.”

I stand up and call out to Josie, then remember that she has her earbuds in, so I walk toward the television room. But that’s enough time for Julia to start following me and peppering me with a series of questions. “Who is this Indiana Jones look-alike? Where did you meet him? Are you going out on a date with him?”

Ignoring her is not an option, so I stop abruptly, which makes Julia run right into my back. As casually as I can muster, I say, “It’s nothing and no, I am not going out with anyone. So there really isn’t anything to tell, I promise.”

ALP PatriciaReview Owl

Starting Over is a heartfelt story about finding the courage to let go of the past and live in the moment. Sweetness and comfort abound with likeable characters in this cute story with fun family dynamics.

I went into this book expecting a romance but what I got was chick lit with romantic undertones. Vanessa’s personal issues seemed to be at the forefront of the story while the budding relationship seemed like an afterthought. As a result, I never felt the chemistry between Vanessa and Cameron. Though I was disappointed in the lackluster romance, there were many things I enjoyed.

The family drama was far more interesting and watching it play out pulled on my heartstrings.  Josie was charming and she reminded me of my own daughter at times. Though she was only 12 years old, Josie was wise beyond her years. The relationship between Josie and Vanessa was easy and fun to watch and quite frankly not always easy to accomplish with tweens.

Vanessa was a bit frustrating at times. I wanted her to be stronger but I understood the hurt she carried really did a number on her confidence. I was delighted to see her find herself again by the end of the story. Cameron was sweet and incredibly patient throughout the story. I wanted more of him and more for him. While that did not happen in this book, I feel like he just might have a story that needs to be told.

Though I wanted more from this story, I did enjoy it overall. It can be enjoyed by those who enjoy stories about women working out their issues.

Excerpt

True love’s kiss . . .

It sounds so innocent and hopeful, and taken at face value it’s a chaste promise of romance and never ending, undying love brought on by a simple kiss between two people. However, when you think about, at least as much as I have, when exactly would you know with all the certainty in your heart that a kiss is the true love’s kiss?

Does it exist merely in fairy tales? Or, if the right man comes along, does his love for

you and all the passion in his heart somehow flow through that barely there brush of lips against yours, until your own heart is overflowing with an emotion that you’ve never felt before? And as a result of this

one little kiss, will you fall head over heels and madly in love with this person, forsaking all others for the rest of your life and vice versa?

The dreamer in me loves the allure of the fantasy. However, the realist in me has a hard time wrapping my head around the whole idea because, really? One kiss could have that much power? I highly doubt it.

 Excerpt

Turning into one of the far rooms of the gallery, which is almost like an alcove that only a few people can fit in at a time, I finally spot Alex.

Alone.

Just me and him in this tiny space.

He’s dressed impeccably, as usual, in a pinstripe suit and a light blue dress shirt that perfectly accentuates his eyes. He’s not wearing a tie again, but that’s good for me because I get to look at his throat while his Adam’s apple bobs up and down while he talks. I know I’m being ridiculous, but something as insignificant as that is so very sexy to me in a really hot guy.

“What are you doing in here all by yourself?” I ask him before bringing the glass to my lips to take another sip. “Are you hiding or something?”

He smiles and ever so smoothly brings his line of vision down my body and back up again, but not before lingering a moment too long on “the boys.”

I knew it! Alex is a tits man, and I feel so vindicated it’s not even funny. In my head I’m doing the Running Man to the tune of Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It” and giving myself a pat on the back.

“Why would I be hiding?” he asks.

“I don’t know, why would you be hiding?”

“Why do you care if I’m hiding or not?”

“Why do you answer every question with another question?”

Alex takes a step forward, and there he goes again crowding my personal space, but I’m standing my ground this time. He raises an eyebrow at my stance and says, “Maybe I like getting you all worked up.”

The double meaning in that is so not lost on me, and just like that, we went from zero to sixty in no time at all.

“Maybe?” I ask innocently while gazing up at him.

“Now look who’s answering with questions.”

His masculine chuckle resonates through me, making my toes curl while he takes the upper hand again. I seriously cannot keep up with this much longer. I’m either going to throw him against the wall and rub myself all over him like a slutty cat on a scratching post, or I’m going to douse myself with a bucket of ice-cold water.

“For your information, I’m not hiding . . . at least not from you,” he explains. “Just like the quiet sometimes.”

“Huh. Always figured you for the type that was into parties and shit.”

“That would imply you’re thinking about me,” he says without missing a beat.

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”

He takes a step forward and moves to my side to leave, but not before ducking his head closer so that I feel his warm breath fan across my ear. “That’s a good question. Are you ready for the answer?”

And then he’s gone, disappearing behind me back into the gallery’s exhibit, while I ponder what just happened, kind of pissed off that the son of a bitch just answered me with another goddamn question.

 Patricia’s Review

Playing it Safe is a fun and flirty read with likeable characters and witty banter that is sure to keep you engaged.

Julia has a tough exterior; but behind the facade is a woman lacking confidence in the wake of the broken heart left by her ex-boyfriend. His sudden reappearance has stirred up all those feelings of inadequacy and left her questioning her self-worth. Julia finds Alex extremely attractive and feels the shift that has transpired between them. Her flirting with Alex is harmless in her mind and Julia’s stubborn determination to keep Alex at arms-length only serves to encourage his advances.

Alex exudes confidence and control and is certainly not afraid to go after what he wants, especially when the pursued resists him ever so diligently. But Alex is determined to break down Julia’s attempts at playing it safe, and is not afraid to pull out all the stops to make it happen. Alex recognizes there is so much more to the magnetism between them if only Julia would succumb to the feelings that simmer just beneath the surface.

I was thrilled when Barbie announced she would be giving us Julia’s story and I LOVED every moment of this story. Alex’s pursuit of Julia was nothing short of entertaining and full of humorous exchanges, smoldering glances and steamy encounters. The witty banter was amusing, the chemistry between Alex and Julia was tangible, and the story was beautifully executed. I especially enjoyed the cameos from Sabrina and Tyler, the characters from Barbie’s debut novel, Promise Me, and I applaud Barbie on a job well done.

Excerpt

I stare at the phone as if it’s about to sprout wings and fly away at any moment.
“Don’t be such a chicken shit,” I mumble out loud to myself. Then I pick up the receiver and angrily start pressing buttons as if I have a personal vendetta against the phone.
Alex picks up on the second ring.
“Julia,” he says. His voice, deep and lush this early in the morning and a shiver runs through me remembering his words from yesterday: I’m going to make you come so many times, blah blah blah . . .
I’ve taken the liberty of just focusing on this piece of his threat because well, honestly, who the hell cares what else he said? It’s not important.
“Julia?” he asks.
“Yes?”
He laughs a delicious low rumble from his chest. Muted, but sexy as hell. “You called me. Is there something you wanted?” he asks.
The question is laced with possibilities. And for once, I’m not going to tuck my tail between my legs and run.
“Yes,” I say trying to contain the smile threatening the corners of my mouth. “I was wondering if you wanted to get together or something.”
“Are you asking me out on a date, Julia?”
“It’s not a date… technically.”
It’s soooo a date.
“It’s not?” he asks amused. “Then what would you call it?”
“Two friends who obviously are very attracted to each other and-“
“-Obviously,” he interrupts. “Go on.”
“As I was saying… two friends who are very attracted to each other and would like to get to know each other better.”
“A date,” he says.
“It’s not a date, Alex.”
“When would you like this not a date but very much so a date to happen?” he asks playfully.
I like playful Alex. Too much. But I don’t want to let that show while on the phone. I’d rather play it cool, safe, and slow. It’s also a bit of a torture trip for both of us, which in the long run makes the chase that much more exciting. I mean, who doesn’t love a good slow burn? I know I do.
“How does tomorrow after work sound for our very much not a date sound?” I ask. “Fox’s? Say around six o’clock?”
He’s smiling when he answers. “It’s a date. Shall I pick you up at your office?”
“I’ll meet you there.”
“Of course you will because it’s not a date, right?” he asks. “Just two friends who are very attracted to each other and want to get to know each other better?”
“You’re catching on,” I answer.
“I’m a fast learner, Julia,” he says with a light chuckle. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
