NOW LIVE!! Show Me the Way by AL Jackson ~ Sarah A’s Review

The first sexy, captivating, stand-alone novel in the brand-new FIGHT FOR ME series from NYT & USA Today Bestselling Author A.L. Jackson . . .

Rex Gunner. As bitter as he is beautiful.

The owner of the largest construction company in Gingham Lakes has been burned one too many times. His wife leaving him to raise their daughter was the last blow this single dad could take. The only woman he’ll let into his heart is his little girl.

Rynna Dayne. As vulnerable as she is tempting.

She ran from Gingham Lakes when she was seventeen. She swore to herself she would never return. Then her grandmother passed away and left her the deed to the diner that she once loved.

When Rex meets his new neighbor, he knows he’s in trouble.

She’s gorgeous and sweet and everything he can’t trust.

Until she becomes the one thing he can’t resist.

One kiss sends them tumbling toward ecstasy.

But in a town this size, pasts are bound to collide. Caught in a web of lies, betrayal, and disloyalty, Rex must make a choice.

Will he hide behind his walls or will he take the chance . . .

Show Me the Way was a mixed bag, for me.  There were moments that were wonderful and deeply moving, but there were also things I really struggled with.  It took some time for me to become truly invested in Rex and Rynna’s story and a big part of the credit for my concern for them is due to Frankie.  Who doesn’t love a spitfire of a little girl?

It took me a minute to connect with these characters.  They both played everything so close to the vest, in terms of their pasts and the parts of them that had been damaged, that it was hard to understand exactly what their motivations were for their actions.  Once they finally started to peel back the layers and expose themselves to one another I found them both much more relatable and likable.  The one character who was immediately lovable was Frankie Leigh, that girl was something else and seeing her find her joy and a whole family was worth any of the other things that happened in the book.

The plot of this book was many-faceted and beautifully layered.  There were some things that were predictable, but the way they were uncovered was interesting.  I loved all of the scenes with little Frankie Leigh, she just stole every inch of the spotlight when she was included.  It was obvious from nearly the beginning the three of them were something amazing and whole when they were all together.

My wish for this book was that there weren’t so many dropped pronouns.  I know this is a signature move for AL Jackson, almost all her heroes drop pronouns, but I feel like it’s becoming overdone.  I’ve never spoken to anyone who drops pronouns as often as these characters do, so to have every male character do it feels strange.

I usually love AL Jackson’s writing, and for the most part, I feel the same about the writing in Show Me the Way.  Rynna’s chapters, in particular, were spectacular.  Rex’s chapters were a harder pill for me to swallow.  While they were very much in AL Jackson’s style for male voice, it’s starting to feel like all those male voices are carbon copies of each other.

Tension roiled between us. That tether pulled taut. Drawing us closer. I swallowed around it and reached for the latch. He was quick to open his door, jumping out and rounding to my side before I had time to step out of his massive truck. He helped me down, and his hand scorched where he aided me by holding on to my elbow.

“Let me walk you to the door. Last thing I need to be worried about is you here by yourself and some asshole taking advantage of you.”

He quirked this belly-flopping grin that pierced me like an arrow. “Unless of course that asshole is me.”

He barely angled his head to the side. There was something so endearing and self-deprecating about it. Everything about him right then was at odds with the surly, bear of a man I’d met weeks ago, the man exposing himself, layer by layer.

I lifted my chin, both in strength and vulnerability, tossing all the uncertainties and questions out into the open. “Should I be afraid?”

“Yeah, you should be.” His response was hard, but there was no missing the fact his irritation was aimed at himself. He set his palm on the small of my back, helping me through the gravel drive in my heels, an inch behind as we ascended the porch steps.

We crossed the planks. That tension wound higher with each step until we were nothing but needy pants at my door. Slowly, I turned around to face him.

His presence sent a ripple of energy vibrating across the floorboards, the overwhelming sight of him the owner of my breath.

He stood beneath the faint glow of the hurricane lamp that hung outside the door. A sculpture of sinewy muscle and raw strength, forged through years of obvious physical labor. Every inch of him was rugged, from those roughened, callused hands to the crinkles set deep at the edges of his eyes.

The man was a carving of pure, daunting beauty.

“What exactly am I supposed to be afraid of, Rex?” My brow twisted, and my voice quieted with the admission. “Because when I’m around you, the last thing I feel is afraid.”

“I fuck everything up, Rynna, and the only thing I’ve got to offer you is my mess. I can’t do this.”

Restraint rumbled in his chest, the sound so deep I felt it shake the ground beneath my feet.

I gently cupped one side of his rugged face. “I’m not afraid.”

It was a promise.

An appeal.

“You should be,” he grated. “Warned you, my shit doesn’t ever end well.”

“Maybe that’s a chance I’m willing to take.”

He groaned and he planted his hands high above my head. The man panted above me, torn, desperate, his nose just brushing mine. “God damn it, Rynna. God damn it.”

I felt the moment he broke. When the thread pulled too tight and this mesmerizing man snapped. His mouth descended on mine.

Overpowering.

Overwhelming.

Dizzying.

Lips and tongue and nips of teeth.

And those hands. They were on my face. My neck. My waist. Somehow, I managed to hold on to him and spin away as I fumbled with the lock. He pressed against my backside, his cock against my bottom, and his mouth leaving a trail of fire at the side of my neck. We stumbled into the darkness of my house, breaking apart as I turned to face him.

The only light trickled down from the lamp I’d left on upstairs.

Slowly, he clicked the door shut behind him. We stood there, two feet away from each other, staring.

Chests heaving.

Before we collided.

A tangle of tongues and bodies.

The man frantic, trying to touch me everywhere.

“What am I doing? Fuck, what am I doing?” he muttered incoherently, kissing me deeper. Madder. Wilder.

I pushed up on my toes and tore my mouth from his so I could kiss down the strong column of his throat. His head thudded back against the door, his entire body pressing against it as if he needed it to keep him standing.

He grated my name, and I kept kissing at his throat while I worked free the button on his jeans, hands shaking.

Every reservation spun out of control.

Out of reach.

It was only spurred further when the defined muscles of his abdomen jumped and twitched beneath my touch, when he mumbled, “You’re killing me, Rynna. Fucking killing me.”

Desire rippled from him in heady waves.

And I felt so brave and bold, my kisses brazen as I nipped at the hollow of his throat.

Before I could consider it—the ramifications and the repercussions and the distinct threat to my heart—I dropped to my knees.

I refused to think of anything but setting him free.

Hoping he’d find a little of that freedom in me.

Release Blitz ~ Stand by AL Jackson ~ Sarah A’s Review

Zachary Kennedy has never been known as a fighter, but he’ll never regret fighting for her…
I’m Zee Kennedy.
Quiet. Reserved. Predictable.
When my brother died, everyone thought I was just the good guy who stepped up to take his place in the band.
No one knew what I was hiding. The one thing I’ve been fighting for.
For seven years, I’ve never lost focus.
Not until one chance encounter with Alexis Kensington.
Now she’s become my greatest temptation.
I knew better than to touch her, but now that I’ve had a taste, I can’t get enough.
Her kiss becomes my air. Her body my salvation.
She needed a savior and somehow she became mine.
Taking her was a betrayal. But keeping her means risking everything.
One look at Alexis Kensington, and I know she’s worth the fight.
Will my past continue to keep me down or will I finally find the strength to pull myself up and Stand.

I feel like I’ve been reading AL Jackson’s Bleeding Stars series forever, yet it’s nowhere near enough time to spend with the boys of Sunder.  Other than Austin’s story, there was no other boy I was more eager to get to spend time with than Zee; he had been such an enigma throughout the entire series I knew his story would be destructive in the best way.

While Zee had always been an important and vital part of the band throughout the Bleeding Stars books, any other knowledge of him was severely limited.  Beyond knowing he had taken his brother’s place in the band and that his loyalty was as fierce as it comes, Zee was an unknown.  His secrets formed a cloud of protection around him which never let anyone, bandmates included, close enough to penetrate.  Getting a glimpse behind the shroud he’d so carefully constructed made my heart break for the boy.  Living with the weight and pain of the past had no doubt crushed Zee to the point he couldn’t see there was more for him than the secrets and lies he so faithfully carried alone.

When all those secrets and his carefully constructed life was threatened by one of the single most wonderful and terrifying things he’d experienced, Zee knew his life wouldn’t, couldn’t be the same.  Watching Zee grapple with the devastation of the secrets of his past being laid bare and having his last tie to his brother potentially being torn away should he make a single misstep, was painful.  He deserved so much more than the life he’d been living, more than keeping the most important part of his life a secret from those people who mattered most to him.

The unraveling of the past and present and each of the secrets that Zee held was masterful.  I loved how AL Jackson was able to bring her story full circle and weave those final moments of Mark’s life and what happened between them into a bright new beginning for Zee.  It was beautiful to see how Alexis played such a vital role in Zee rediscovering his own life, rather than continuing to live the half-life he’d been living in order to keep everyone else happy.  Alexis’s entrance in to Zee’s life, while spine-chilling, was one of the most impactful things a person could experience.  I’m very glad AL Jackson wrote it the way she did, because I’m not sure that a less intense experience would have been enough to knock Zee’s world off balance enough for him to see he needed more than he was allowing himself.

While I am sad to be saying goodbye to this world and the boys of Sunder, I am glad AL Jackson sent them off the way she did.  I loved getting to check in with all of them one final time and see they’d found all the love and happiness they needed and deserved.  These boys and their families will always hold a special place in my heart and I am thankful to Ms. Jackson for bringing their stories to life and sharing their souls with the world.

His voice was low. The word might have been a question had it not glided across my skin like familiarity and warmth.

“Alexis.”

I barely nodded, my response a whisper as my heart fluttered and sped.
“Alexis.”
His gaze dipped for a moment, tracing me head to toe. As if he needed reassurance I was here. Something about it felt so intimate and private, as if maybe when he’d chipped away that piece of my soul he somehow knew he held it, too.
“I hope it’s okay I’m here,” he said, forcing my attention back to his eyes.
A lump grew heavy in my throat and I swallowed around it, nodding as I tried to find my voice.
“Of course it’s okay.”
Maybe I should have been hearing warning bells. A thousand caution flags tossed in the air and raining down around me. Because there was something about this brilliant boy that screamed trouble and mayhem. Undoubtedly, this man wore his own beautiful brand of destruction.
And I was the fool who always seemed to run straight for it. Diving right into the middle of it without having the first clue what was waiting for me.
“I’m Zachary Kennedy. Friends call me Zee,” he said, shifting on his feet as if he were wondering what he was doing here.
I could feel the pull of the soft smile at the side of my mouth.
“I know who you are.”
“Is that so?” he asked. Something about it rang with a tease.
I nodded.
Of course I did.
He was the drummer for one of the biggest rock bands in the world.
And I realized that probably put both of us at a disadvantage. No doubt he had women throwing themselves at him any time he walked off a stage or into a room. Wanting a taste of fame or maybe a name to drop, salivating over this boy simply for who he was.
It didn’t help he had to be the most gorgeous man I’d ever seen.
But this was different. The staggering need I felt to know him more. Not the boy pinned to Pinterest boards labeling him a sexy, tattooed bad boy. Not the boy splashed across the tabloids with their speculations and judgement.
The real man.
This man made up of flesh and bone. The man who rushed into an alley in the middle of the night to defend a complete stranger. The man who’d tenderly rocked me in his arms while I’d felt the controlled rage radiating from his body.
The one who now stood in my doorway, spinning my mind with how he could both look so powerful and vulnerable.
My insides shook, and I took a step back and widened my door.
“Would you like to come in?”
A smile crept to his mouth that would be my complete undoing, this tug of full, soft lips framed by his beard. He tilted his head to the side.
“You’re awful brave to be inviting a complete stranger into your house.”
I lifted my chin and met his gaze.
“A complete stranger who put his life on the line. A stranger who stood between me and a gun. You could have died, and I very well might have if it wasn’t for you. Trust comes in a lot of forms, and I’m pretty sure you’ve already earned mine.”

I have so, so many thoughts and feelings about STAY.  I’m glad to have experienced it, devastated that it’s over, and exhausted from the experience. This book was deeply personal for me. Not because of Ash and Willow, it was Summer that reached into my soul. She was the embodiment of my baby sister. She too, burned bright and fast, spending her life searching for that illusive happiness. The bullet points of Summer’s life lined up so closely to Hannah’s it made me hurt for everyone involved. I could feel Willow’s pain because it was my own. I am always in awe of AL Jackson’s writing but this book just touched all of the darkest parts of my heart, mind, and soul like others have never done. I’m thankful she entrusted the world with this magical piece of art, I will long treasure the experience it was.

They say that each reader brings their own experiences into a book and for that reason, no one ever experiences the same story.  STAY exemplifies that adage, for me.  While others fell for Ash and Willow, my love for this book is rooted in a character who wasn’t present in many of the pages but without whom the book could not exist.  She was the most vibrant and wonderful part of the book, as far as I was concerned.  It was she, however, who colored every thought, every feeling, every moment of both Ash and Willow’s lives.  She was the constant pulling them together and tearing them apart.

There are certain books that slowly and deliberately steal pieces of your heart, it’s done so carefully you don’t know you’re completely in love with the words, the characters, the author until you’re finished and you have to leave those pages and move on.  This was STAY for me.  The dark parts of Ash that he kept hidden stole pieces.  The light and hope that was Willow stole more pieces.  Summer and her overwhelming sadness stole the rest.  I am completely, irrevocably in love with AL Jackson and this book.  I know I will spend the next days thinking of STAY and wishing I could go back and relive each moment in the pages like I’d never been through them before.

His hands slid across the slope of my cheeks. He gripped me there and let his forehead drop to mine as he panted for a breath. “Pretend with me, Peaches. Pretend with me.”

Confusion distorted my already clouded judgment, and I clung tighter to his wrists to keep from falling to the floor. “What?”

“Pretend with me. Pretend that everything that article said was true. Pretend that you’re mine and I’m yours. That you tamed the ultimate bad boy. Let’s show up at your reunion and show that bastard exactly what he lost. What he’s missing out on. Let him know he’s the loser at his own game.”

He swept his tongue over his swollen lips. “And after two months, when you finish this job, when you leave your mark on my house with your amazing talent, you can publicly break up with the world’s most notorious rock star. Because you and me both know he doesn’t come close to bein’ good enough for you. Let’s go. Let’s show Bates and that bitch they can both go fuck themselves.”

He squeezed his eyes closed and nearly begged it. “Pretend with me.”

What if you hurt me?

What if I fall in love with you?

What if I want you to stay?

All my reservations howled and roared.

All I’d ever wanted was to be loved.

This man was offering me a counterfeit version of that.

“That won’t change the fact those pictures are a lie.” The words were tight when I forced them from between my lips.

“So it’ll be our lie. Ours. I want to try. Let me try to put some of those broken pieces back together again. Make you remember who you are. Shake you out from that battered shell so you’ll be ready when that guy comes looking for you.”

The last of those reservations screamed.

What if I want him to be you?

His lips touched mine.

Soft. Sweet. Fire.

“Please,” he said.

“Okay.”

Her lips parted, and her expression churned in confusion.

Lust. Need. Want. Fear.

All of them played out across her delicate features.

I shouldn’t have. I knew I shouldn’t. But there was nothing I could do to stop myself.

Always, always in the moment.

That was me.

I pressed her harder against the wall, my straining cock eager against her jean-clad pussy.

Desperate for friction.

Anxious for relief.

Everything sparked, and I could have sworn the room spun, the ground shifting below our feet.

She gasped out in surprise, eyes so damned wide. Her nails pricked where they dug into the flesh of my shoulders.

Hanging on.

What was this girl doing to me?

I leaned down, my mouth close to her ear. My voice came on a rough murmur. “Do you want me?”

Blog Tour & Giveaway ~ Wait by AL Jackson ~ Sarah A.’s Review

ALJackson-WaitBookCover5x8_BW_HIGHFrom NYT & USA Today bestselling author comes a new Bleeding Stars stand-alone novel…

She is his strength and he is her weakness. And this time, he won’t let her go.

Edie Evans is gorgeous.

Sexy.

Kind.

She’s also the definition of off-limits.

But that didn’t stop me from sneaking into her room to comfort her at night.

But guys like me? We destroy everything, so it should have been no surprise when I destroyed us, too.

The night I sent her running, I thought I’d never see her again.

Until I saw her standing like a vision in the crowd.

Austin Stone is dangerous.

Alluring.

Tempting.

He broke my heart and I refused to give him the chance to do it again.

It’s been years since I’ve seen him, and now I can’t do anything but stare at the gorgeous, tattooed man playing onstage. I should run. I know I should. But like a fool, I run straight back to him.

Our desire is overpowering.
Our need unrelenting.

She is my hope.
He is my weakness.

We should have known a passion this intense would burn us right into the ground.

Austin Stone’s story has been one of my most highly anticipated books, since the moment I read about him in A Stone in the Sea.  That poor, broken boy in the hoodie pulled on my heartstrings.  His pain was incredibly a siren’s call, leading me to a story that would surely destroy me.  I got that, and more, in Wait.

Austin and Edie each had pasts that made my soul ache for them.  Things that had happened to them when they were so young, it was no wonder they lived the way they did.  Each finding a way to protect themselves from any sort of real connection.  Both knowing the only way they’d ever be whole was in the arms of the other.  Their story was heartbreaking, destroying, healing.

The characters in this book were so well developed; it felt as they’d been plucked from their lives and forced into the pages of a book.  From their speech patterns to the way they held themselves each character was unique, there was no cut and paste formula going on in this book.  Told in dual perspective, Wait is from the POVs of Austin and Edie, and each of their chapters had an individual voice.  There was something rough around the edges about the way Austin’s chapters were written, while Edie’s were sweet, reserved, wholly her.  It was a masterful bit of characterization.

Wait wasn’t as high on the present action as the previous books in this series have been.  It more than made up for it in the way the past was presented, and how those moments were weaved into their impact on the current state of the relationships between Austin, Edie, and their friends and family.  The way AL Jackson made the mistakes, the pain, and the damage of the past color every second of Austin and Edie’s present was powerful.

The very best part of this book, however, was the growth arc the characters completed.  I was absolutely blown away with how much Austin and Edie learned from each other.  From the mistakes, they’d made in the past.  From the damage of holding on to their pain.  The final chapter of this book was incredibly powerful.  It was a soul-shaking moment.  It was perfection.

AL Jackson never disappoints.  Never.  Especially not with this book.  Her writing draws me in in a way I can’t properly explain.  There’s a pull to the characters, a connection to them, that not many authors can capture.  When she writes it’s more than a story, she uses her words to capture the very essence of what it feels to be in someone else’s soul.  There’s nothing quite like it.

“Shit,” I hissed, bracing myself against the spray of the icy shards pelting from the shower head.

I sucked in a breath, released it between clenched teeth, and forced myself fully under it.

Head dropped and chest heaving as rivers of ice-cold water slicked down my shoulders and back.

But it did nothing to lessen the need. Gave me no sanity or pacification.

Because all I could think about was the girl on the other side of the door.

My girl.

In my bed.

Wearing just her panties and my shirt.

An angel I wanted to dirty.

I always had.

Love was messy like that.

All of my restraint scattered. I gripped my cock. Squeezed the base. My mouth dropped open at the pressure of my hand against my rigid length.

A fool thinking it might be enough.

Shit.

God, I was a bastard, but there was nothing I could do before I was giving in, leaning forward and bracketing my forearm above my head to hold my weight.

Water pounded down on my head and back while I pounded my fist against my dick.

Trying to keep silent when all I wanted was to moan, teeth digging into my bottom lip as I pictured the girl spread out for me.

My breaths were coming short.

Panted and hard.

I gave into imagining the sounds she would make when I finally got to bury myself in her body.

A soft, soft gasp.

I slowed, trying to convince myself that throaty sound was all in my mind.

Just another part of this fantasy.

Until I heard the small thump against the wall.

Shit.

I mashed my eyes closed, like it might hide me.

Conceal the depravity of my actions after I’d just been comforting her hours before.

Heart thrashing, I turned and moved far enough to peek out the small section where the fabric shower curtain hadn’t been drawn fully closed.

It was just a little sliver that left me exposed.

But it was enough. When I peered out, I was looking right at my girl pressed up against the wall.

She stared right back at me.

And I wanted to be horrified, my mind scrambling to conjure every weak apology I could summon. Ready to fucking grovel to keep her from turning and running once again.

Because that’s exactly what I expected her to do.

But her expression…her expression clutched me in the center of the chest and sent what little brain function I had left stampeding south.

Red, lush lips were parted, her hand pressed to her hollow of her throat, pupils dilated so big that her hooded, cerulean eyes appeared black. Needy breaths were coming at me from that sweet mouth like a goddamned freight train.

Desire swelled in the confines of the too-tight room.

Alive.

She pressed deeper into the wall as if it might support her weakened knees. Head rocked back. Thighs squeezing together.

Motherfuck.

My hand shot to the shower wall to steady myself. “Warning you, Edie, you need to get out of here. Right now.”

Where Lightning Strikes is the stand-alone, third book in AL Jackson’s Bleeding Stars series.  It can be read without first reading Stone in the Sea and Drowning to Breathe, but there will be a few moments, ones involving other characters, from which the backstory will be missing.  If you want a full understanding of the group dynamics reading those books is a must.  Plus, it’s AL Jackson, you won’t be disappointed.

Lyrik and Tamar’s strained dynamic had piqued my interest in the first two books; I was sure there was a shared past keeping them tied in such a battle.  I was quite interested in finding out what could have possibly stirred such animosity and intensity between the two.  I was quite surprised to find that I was completely off course in all of my assumptions.  Pleasantly so, but taken aback, nonetheless.

Both Lyrik and Tamar were profoundly damaged.  Hearts broken beyond repair, souls crushed into oblivion, both hiding behind carefully constructed façades.  The pain they both wore as armor seemed to be calling for the other; only someone else with unbearable scars can understand what it is like to live with them.   I was undeniably moved to watch Tamar and Lyrik carefully traverse the minefield of the others pain.  Thoughtfully and meticulously doing whatever they could to relieve one another of the burden of their pasts; even when they were resistant to the help being given.

Where Lightning Strikes was a poignant story of redemption and rising above the chains of the past.  Letting each reader feel the weight of the choices made, right or wrong, and experience the hurt one small decision can bear across the landscape of the future.  It was also a window into how much one person can grow and change when they are faced with the person they are meant to be with.  I’m infatuated with Lyrik and Tamar’s story, with the nuances of their love, with the devastation they were able to rise above.

AL Jackson has long been one of the best wordsmiths I know, and she did not disappoint with this story.  Her ability to knock the breath straight out of my lungs is amazing.  It keeps me coming back, time and again, for that soul-deep hurt and healing I love to feel when I get lost in a book.

My smile faded when I looked back again to where he lingered near the door. My head drifted to the side to take him in as his expression shifted through a thousand emotions.

Regret. Sorrow. Lust.

And a longing that nearly brought me to my knees.

Desire trembled through my body.

I wanted to crawl inside him.

To discover every secret.

Even though I got the crushing feeling knowing him would be the end of me.

Cautiously, he edged forward.

Tall.

Beautiful.

Strong.

The air filled up with him. So thick I wasn’t sure I could breathe.

Gently he wound his fingers through my hair. Not so gently he tugged my head back and pinned me with that stare. Slowly he dipped down, my stomach in a thousand blissful knots as he left a dizzying trail of kisses down my neck.

Soft, silken lips.

Little flicks of tongue.

Tingles spread in a wildfire of sensation.

Then his voice was at my ear. Whispering belief. “Blue.”

Blue. Blue. Blue.

She was so scared and unsure and innocently brave. Because she wanted all the things I’d learned the hard way the world didn’t have to give. But she wanted me to fight for them anyway.

Callused fingertips trailed down my sides, and I trembled when they edged under the hem of my shirt. Skin to skin.

“Is this okay?” he asked, his voice like gravel.

My answer scraped from my throat. “Yes.”

Lyrik pulled my tee over my head, slow but sure.

A cool rush of air sent a rush of chills skating free across the flames. My chest heaved as Lyrik stared down at me in my jeans and bra. Eating me up with that irresistible intensity.

I knew my eyes were wild as I looked up at him. My pulse hammered and my spirit thrashed.

“Blue,” he murmured again as he went down onto his knees. He peeked up at me every few seconds as he worked the bandage free from my side. My belly shook as he peeled the bandage away and exposed the statement that had been etched into my side over my ribs, from my hip bone to just under my arm pit on the left side. And I knew the area needed to be cleaned. But somehow right then, I didn’t care.

I just wanted him to see.

The four simple letters were written in a big, scrolling font, and swirls and flowers extended from the first and last letters.

Rise.

Lightly, he drummed his fingertips over the design, not quite touching the raw skin.

His unyielding gaze latched onto mine. “I think you already have.”
