One Small Thing by Erin Watt ~ Sarah A’s Review

Beth’s life hasn’t been the same since her sister died. Her parents try to lock her down, believing they can keep her safe by monitoring her every move. When Beth sneaks out to a party one night and meets the new guy in town, Chase, she’s thrilled to make a secret friend. It seems a small thing, just for her.

Only Beth doesn’t know how big her secret really is…

Fresh out of juvie and determined to start his life over, Chase has demons to face and much to atone for, including his part in the night Beth’s sister died. Beth, who has more reason than anyone to despise him, is willing to give him a second chance. A forbidden romance is the last thing either of them planned for senior year, but the more time they spend together, the deeper their feelings get.

Now Beth has a choice to make—follow the rules, or risk tearing everything apart…again.

Up until the last maybe ten pages of One Small Thing I was prepared to write an amazing review on how redemptive and healing this book was.  I was completely involved in Beth and Chase’s story of love, forgiveness, and trust.  However, the end was so dissatisfying and abrupt; it ruined much of the joy I had while reading the rest of the story.

Beth won me over from the off; she seemed to be so alone despite being surrounded by people who cared for her.  She was angry and sad and had been so isolated by the way her loved ones were protecting her.  When she started acting out, I was 100% there for it.  I was pretty impressed by how she’s handled herself, as I’m not sure I’d be able to rein my anger in as well as she did in the same situation.  I also appreciated how much she grew and realized other people’s opinions weren’t as important as what she knew to be true.

I wanted to not like Chase, much for the same reasons as Beth wanted, but it was impossible.  He was so much more than his past, what the general public thought about him, and what he gave himself credit for.  Chase broke my heart with the way he continued to punish himself for something he’d never intended to happen.  Once he finally began to accept the connection he felt with Beth, I nearly sighed in relief because I could feel the weight of the world begin to shift slightly off his shoulders.

One Small Thing was a poignant story of those precarious years immediately before adulthood, that time when you need to be your own person yet are still firmly under the control of the adults in your life.  It’s a story of looking deeper than the surface, beyond the preconceived notions, to the heart of a person and believing in them because of the goodness found there.  It was a story about learning to compromise without sacrificing your needs and when to stand-up against the things you can not abide.  I was impressed with how much this story had to say about the human condition and how fallible even the most cautious and concerned people can be.

I do have one major wish for this book, and that would be the lackluster ending.  For the entirety of the novel we had a huge workup to a fabulous – if somewhat predictable – climax, then we had no real resolution to any of it.  There was an awkward aside in the final chapter I think was supposed to satisfy my need for healing and closure, but it just felt like an afterthought.  To me, it seemed like the authors weren’t sure how to balance the essential healing the characters deserved with the poignancy of the rest of the story and decided the synopsized ending was the best option.  I just know the greatness of the rest of the book was lost in those last few unsatisfying pages.

Erin Watt has been hit or miss for me.  Most of their earlier books are so beautiful, so consuming, I wasn’t able to refrain myself from absorbing every word at an alarming rate. However, their later pieces seem to be missing the magic they’d captured in those first several stories.  I had really thought One Small Thing had recaptured that enchantment, but it didn’t quite make it there.  I only hope to see them return to their roots and deliver more of those captivating stories that won me over, to begin with.

Erin Watt is the brainchild of two bestselling authors linked together through their love of great books and an addiction to writing. They share one creative imagination. Their greatest love (after their families and pets, of course)? Coming up with fun–and sometimes crazy–ideas. Their greatest fear? Breaking up.

The Wright One by KA Linde ~ Sarah A’s Review

A new sexy contemporary romance duet from USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde…

Secrets swarm all around.
My world is crumbling under the strain.
I don’t know if we can survive this.
My heart is in the Wright place.
But is his?

The Wright One is the last book in the Wright Love Duet that began in The Wright Love. Find out if Sutton and David survive their world of secrets in the conclusion to the Wright Love duet!

Amazon US | B&N | iBooks | Kobo | GooglePlay | Amazon UK

My heart broke for David at the end of The Wright Love.  Yes, I knew he’d crossed some serious trust boundaries by withholding the bombshell dropped by Penn, but I could understand his reticence to tell anyone the truth of his past.  I loved getting to know more about him throughout the course of The Wright One.

As heartwrenching as Sutton’s story was in the Wright Love, David’s was just as traumatic for completely different reasons.  The light that was shed on his estrangement from his family, how truly alone he was in the world, was something I couldn’t begin to fathom.  He may have made some incredibly poor choices in keeping secrets, but it was all done in the name of protecting his heart.

Sutton, once again, amazed me with her strength.  Of course, she had her moments of weakness – after everything she’d been through she deserved to be allowed to be completely broken sometimes – but she always pulled herself back together and fought.  For herself. For her son. For her family. For David.

Despite many moments of insecurity, The Wright One was a sweet romance story.  Sutton and David had more than a few things to work through, and sometimes those pitfalls seemed like they were too deep to emerge from, but they battled for what they wanted, what they needed.  As they slowly but surely worked on themselves and their relationship, it was wonderful to see their broken pieces start to find a new way to fit together.

The Wright One is the second book in KA Linde’s Wright Love Duet.  These books are both about Sutton and David and can not be read independently of the other.  The Wright Love series is part of the Wright series world, though those books do not need to be read to understand The Wright Love Duet.  The Wright One is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Sutton and David.

KA Linde did a phenomenal job of wrapping up this duet.   There was enough conflict to keep it interesting, enough romance to keep me swooning, and enough healing to keep me invested in Sutton and David’s happiness.  I was also impressed with how well she set up stories for some secondary characters, and I can’t wait to see how they play out.

Could he be the Wright love?

“You getting on the bull?” Linc asks.
I look at Rhett, unsure who his buddy is talking to. I point to myself. “Me?”
“Yeah.” Linc laughs. “Cheryl is pretty easy. She won’t hurt you too bad.”
“Who is Cheryl?”
“The mechanical bull,” Linc answers, pointing to the opposite side of the bar.
Sure enough, there’s a large doorway, leading into another room.
“If you’re getting on, I suggest you do it before you eat your dinner.”
“She’s not getting on,” Rhett says, stealing a bite of my cake.
I had no intention of getting on Cheryl, but the way Rhett brushed it off makes me want to.
“You don’t think I can handle it?”
Rhett’s eyebrows lift. “I didn’t say that.”
“You were thinking it.”
“Uh-oh,” Linc mumbles.
“That’s not what I was thinking.”
“You dismissed the idea awful quickly.”
I smile as Rhett studies me, daring him to tell me I can’t do it.
“Fine.” Dropping his fork on the plate, he leans back in his seat. “Do it.”
“I will.” I take another bite of cheesecake and set Rhett’s fork on the opposite side of the table, where he can’t reach it.
“Hey, I want another bite.”
“Sorry, I don’t share my cake with people who don’t believe in my riding abilities.”
“Oh, I believe in your riding abilities, sweetheart,” he says, his voice dropping low.
My cheeks heat, and Linc shows Rhett a knowing smile.
“Move.” I scoot toward Rhett, shoving him out of the booth.
Linc tosses his napkin on the table. “This is going to be great.”
“Mo, come on,” Rhett chides. “You don’t have to do this. I don’t want you to get hurt, sweetheart.”
I whirl on him. “Well, now maybe you know how I feel. Only when you get on a bull, your life is in danger. Mine, not so much.”
His hand locks on my elbow as I try to walk away. “Okay, point made—although it’s entirely different. You shouldn’t risk getting hurt. You have your dad to take care of. He needs you to come home in one piece.”
“And I need you to come home in one piece. It isn’t just you anymore, Rhett. I’m your who, remember? We’re a we now, and one of these days you’re going to have to accept that. I feel like you’re waiting for me to walk away or do something to mess this up, but that’s not going to happen. I’m in this for the long haul, whether you get back on a bull or not.”
“Wait a minute, I’m lost. She’s your who?” Linc says.
“I’ll explain later,” Rhett mumbles.
I turn around and walk toward the back room. Sure as shit, there’s Cheryl, a big, black mechanical bull sitting in the middle of the room. She’s surround by ropes, and the floor beneath her is covered in mats. Several tables sit off to the side, a few of them occupied.
I march up to the man with the Broken Boot shirt on. “I want to ride Cheryl.”
“You do, huh?”
Rhett and Linc step up behind me, and Rhett reaches around me to shake the guy’s hand.
“Hey, Jimmy.”
“Hey, Rhett. How are ya? How’s the shoulder?”
“It’s good. I’ll be heading back to work soon. Just have to wrap up a few loose ends.”
I’m guessing those loose ends are me.
“This your girl?” Jimmy asks.
“Yeah.” Rhett smiles fondly at me.
“You okay with her getting on Cheryl?”
“Not at all, but I don’t have much of a say.”
“Do we ever? Damn stubborn women do whatever they want,” Jimmy says, nodding toward Cheryl.
“I could say the same about men.” I look up at Rhett, a hand on my jutted hip.
Jimmy lets out a laugh. “I like you, sugar. Follow me.”

LAW & BEARD

Series: The Dixie Warden Rejects
Author: Lani Lynn Vale
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Day: March 8th

Synopsis

Winnie thinks she has the perfect life.

Two beautiful, healthy children. A police officer husband. A job that she loves. Oh, and let’s not forget that she’s a nationally ranked marathon runner.

Fast forward six months, and her perfect life has imploded.

Winnie finds herself in a completely new world, and this new world is a brutal bitch.

In this new life of hers, her husband is gone. He realizes, at the worst possible time, that he’s no longer in love with her. He’s in love with her best friend. So he leaves, and doesn’t look back.

Her sixteen-year-old daughter is in trouble with the law, and she’s barely making ends meet thanks to losing the job that was keeping her and her tiny family afloat.

Then, the last thing that could make it all bearable, her running, is ripped out from under her, too. Thanks to a spinal stroke that leaves her unable to walk, let alone run, she’s having to relearn how to do the simplest of tasks-such as putting on her own pants.

She’s at the lowest of lows, and the last thing she wants is a sexy, bearded, motorcycle riding alpha to tell her how to live her life.

But Steel Cross never asks her what she wants.

***

The moment Steel Cross sees Winnie’s daughter steal some shoes for her younger brother, he knows he’s in trouble.

He’s a sucker for misunderstood teens. After all, he was once one himself.

He knows he can’t just walk away, and the moment he sees that troubled teen’s mother, he doesn’t just know it, he feels it. Down to the very bottom of his soul.

With his share of hard knocks, he knows that he shouldn’t step in and make his move on a fellow police officer’s ex. There’s a code, after all, yet he just can’t seem to help himself.

He’s done being the good guy. Sometimes he just wants to be bad.

And Winnie makes him realize that being bad is still kind of good. As long as you’re with the right person.

Excerpt

I’d never, not once, had the pleasure of giving a blow job.

Yet, I wanted to give one…to Steel.

Jesus Christ, did I want to give him one.

The man turned me on in ways that I had no clue I could be turned on by, yet here I was, wondering what it would feel like to give the man a blow job.

My curiosity got the better of me as I googled more tips-which they’d said they’d done as a comparison-and then I got lost in the World Wide Web.

My first stop had been Cosmopolitan!

My second had been some random Joe-Blow (literally, that was the name of the website) blog that gave the men’s top ten best blow job tips-according to men.

1. Maintain eye contact.

2. Tie your hair back, it shows your dedication.

3. Allow him to put his hand in your hair and control the movements.

That, I could do! In fact, the idea of Steel putting his hands in my hair and controlling all of the movement was downright arousing.

4. Use your hand as well as your mouth. Twist it side to side lightly as you pump and suck him.

Okay, pump, suck, and twist. Check!

5. Don’t use your teeth. Ever.

I shivered at the thought. That would suck, accidentally biting Steel’s dick. He’d probably never let me near him again and kick me straight the hell out of his bed. Though, I had to get in his bed first…

6. Drop down so he’s standing and you’re kneeling. There’s nothing more arousing than watching a woman get on her knees.

That thought made me shiver. Would Steel like me on my knees?

I sure the hell hoped so. I’d love to get on my knees for him.

Then again, I was doing good with my rehab…he still might have to help me back up.

I winced. Maybe I should just get on the bed between his splayed thighs…yes, that was how I’d do it.

7. Suck his balls.

Suck his balls? How the hell did I put those in my mouth? There wasn’t enough room!

8. Go slow. It’s not a race.

9. Swallow.

Well, that was self-explanatory. But I didn’t know if I could swallow. I’d try, but what if I gagged?

10. We like it when you gag.

Did they? What if I accidentally threw up? That would completely ruin the mood.

“What are you doing?”

I squeaked and jumped as Steel came out of the bathroom.

Read an excerpt from CITY UNDER SIEGE

I was practically kneeling in front of the screen as I tried to understand what I was seeing. Men were shouting at one another, though their words were indecipherable.

The person filming darted out from behind a shipping container to take more shots. Everything was happening so fast, the camera moving wildly with the person it was attached to. Finally, I realised it was a body cam by the way it was flailing and jerking all over the place. I had no idea what shipyard they were in, but it made sense that the assault would be there rather than a boat. They would have wanted to take the terrorists after the handover happened, just to be sure.

A soldier came into shot across the way, crouched behind another container, and I guessed he was one of ours. Covered from head to toe, it was impossible to know who it was, but I held my breath anyway. The camera at least became steady as the gunfire slowly ebbed, though focused now on the last of the targets. In the periphery of the screen, the kneeling soldier leant further forward to take a shot when he was yanked sharply backwards in a move that literally saved his life. As the last shot rang out, sounding a death knell to the terrorists who’d been responsible for taking so many innocent civilian lives, the rest of the team seemed to realise what I already knew. The rescuer, the guardian angel who’d ripped his teammate away from the path of certain death, had exposed himself to make the ultimate sacrifice, saving his friend’s life at the expense of his own. Soldiers darted in front of the camera again, and a few more indistinguishable voices called out before the silence. The excruciating, insufferable, tormenting silence, broken only by the clear voice that cut through the darkness like a scythe, ripping a hole through my heart as it did.

“Man down.”

Whitney’s 4.5 Star Review

Sarah and Tom’s story sucked me in right away! Although this book is a departure for R.J. Prescott, it still feels very much like her previous books in terms of writing style. City Under Siege is just edgier, darker, more suspenseful.

With a storyline dealing with London terrorism, it’s nkt always easy to read. But Sarah and Tom’s love story is the focus of the book and these characters are written beautifully.

Sarah has a real spark to her, is emotionally tough and resilient. Tom has a dark side but would go to the ends of the earth for the short list of people he cares about. Their attraction to each other is instant but their relationship is a bit of a slow burn, especially physically. The tension is great and the story flows amazing well.

Fast paced and well balanced with dark and light, this book kept me turning the pages unlike any book I’ve read in quite a while.

I also loved that the author stayed true to her British roots and wrote this book using slang, humor and grammar that is not American. Since the book is set in and around London, it makes the story much more authentic.

If you’re leery of the subject matter, I can understand that but please give this book a chance when you think you can. The story has a lot of hope, beautiful love, and a more than satisfying ending. It also wouldn’t hurt my heart to see a spin-off or two about the side characters. There’s a whole cast of fun and sexy guys besides Tom.

Adriana Locke:

A contemporary romance author running on coffee and sticky kisses from my rowdy four little boys.

From Indiana, I’m a true Mid-Westerner. Life, for me, is about family, faith, and food. When I’m not running my kiddos around or having a lunch date of fajitas with my husband (and high school sweetheart), you can find me outside. I love a good sunny day almost as much as I love candy, random quotes, and steamy bad boys in fantastic books.

I’m on nearly every social media platform. Please find me on the ones you frequent – I love chatting with readers.

Mandi Beck:

Mandi Beck has been an avid reader all of her life. A deep love for books always had her jotting down little stories on napkins, notebooks, and her hand. As an adult she was further submerged into the book world through book clubs and the epicness of social media. It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer.

A nursing student, mother to two rambunctious and somewhat rotten boys, and stepmom to two great girls away at college, she shares her time with her husband in Chicago where she was born and raised. Mandi is a diehard hockey fan and blames the Blackhawks when her deadlines are not met.

Emma Scott:

I write romances with flawed characters, characters with artistic hearts: builders, poets, and writers of various makes and models. I love to write book lovers; those who have found refuge, companionship, and escape in books, much as we do in real life. I like realism, honesty, authenticity in storytelling. I love to write about enduring love, soul-deep love, in as real a setting as I can make, but with big smooshy HEAs. I believe in diversity, open-mindedness, and inclusion. I like sweetness mixed with steam, love conquering all, and above all, hope. Love always wins.

Meghan Quinn:

A BLONDE AT HEART

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

Kate Stewart:

Kate Stewart lives in Charleston, S.C. with her husband, Nick, and her naughty beagle, Sadie. A native of Dallas, Kate moved to Charleston three weeks after her first visit, dropping her career of 8 years, and declaring it her creative muse. Kate pens messy, sexy, angst-filled contemporary romance as well as romantic comedy and erotic suspense because it’s what she loves as a reader. A lover of all things ’80s and ’90s, especially John Hughes films and rap, she dabbles a little in photography, can knit a simple stitch scarf for necessity only and does a horrible job of playing the ukulele. Aside from running a mile without collapsing, traveling is the only other must on her bucket list. On occasion, she does very well at vodka.

Rochelle Paige:

Rochelle Paige is the Amazon bestselling author of nineteen books. She absolutely adores reading and her friends growing up used to tease her when she trailed after them, trying to read and walk at the same time. She loves stories with alpha males, sassy heroines, hot sex and happily ever afters. She is a bit of a genre hopper in both her reading and her writing. So far she’s written books in several romance sub-genres including new adult, contemporary, paranormal and romantic suspense.

She is the mother of two wonderful sons who inspired her to chase her dream of being an author. She wants them to learn from her that you can live your dream as long as you are willing to work for it.

Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Suspense
Release Date: December 7, 2017
Cover Design: Letitia Hasser
Add to Goodreads

Six foot three. Dynamic green eyes. Utterly irresistible.

Ethan Everest stole my breath the first time I saw him. He romanced me with skill, dazzled me with his charisma, and proceeded to steal my heart right after.

I might have fallen for his easy going smile the first time we met, but I fell for him the second time.

Honey-colored hair. Cherry-kissed lips. Captivatingly gorgeous.

Singer Davis was the first, and only, woman to ever intimidate me. She spoke to my heart with her wit, seduced me with her eyes, and became the only thing that made sense in a world that made none.

I let her slip through my fingers once. I won’t make that mistake twice.

Secrets broke us apart. Can a second chance bring us back together?

Living in the capital of Texas with her family, Scott loves traveling and avocados, beaches, and cooking with her kids. She’s obsessed with epic romances and loves a good plot twist. Her favorite color is blue, but she likens it more toward the sky than the emotion. Her home is filled with the welcoming symbol of the pineapple and finds surfing a challenge though she likes to think she’s a pro.
