A Kiss to Tell by W Winters ~ RELEASE BOOST

I didn’t need anyone to tell me, I knew he was forbidden with a single glance.
He was a boy I should be afraid of and definitely a boy I should never want. No matter how much neither of those statements were true.

From the first time I saw him, Sebastian had a hard stare that pinned me in place.  And, years later, it hasn’t softened.

We lived on the same street, went to the same school, though he was a year ahead.  Even so close, he was untouchable.
He was bad news and I was the sad girl who didn’t belong.

One night changed everything.
We both had secrets.  We both saw the pain in each other’s eyes.
That gaze that gave me chills, turned to a lust-filled haze that heated every inch of me.
But that didn’t change who he was.  A man who would take everything from me.

A Kiss to Tell started out incredibly.  The story was fascinating, the characters sympathetic, and it fit into the world she’d already established in her Sinful Obsessions series. However, the end didn’t quite deliver the closure or open-ended cliffhanger I’ve come to expect from her.  I’m honestly not sure if Chloe and Sebastian’s story is meant to be complete or if I should be anticipating more from them in the future.

While I was reading A Kiss to Tell I was completely wrapped up in the story, I felt so bad for Chloe and all the things she’d suffered through in her short life; I was obsessed with Sebastian and his secrecy and his compulsion to protect Chloe.  After I finished the book, I was left a little bereft as to who the characters were outside of the intense situation they’d been living in.  I wish we’d seen them living in normalcy for just a little bit, so I would have had a better impression of who they were as people.

The plot of A Kiss to Tell was intense.  Between the flashbacks to Chloe and Sebastian’s earlier interactions and the events surrounding the night that changed Chloe’s life, Chloe’s mysterious dreams, and the sinister, yet too convenient, things happening in their town, the intrigue was high, and the questions were many.  A Kiss to Tell also gave us a glimpse of the town Carter (Merciless, Heartless) runs, and a younger, more innocent Carter, before he became the ruthless man we’ve come to know.

I wish the book had a more solid ending.  When I got to about 90%, I knew there wasn’t enough book left to wrap up all the loose ends, so I anticipated a cliffhanger. Instead, I got a half-finished book that felt rushed and incomplete.  I’m not sure if it was meant to feel that way or if the author was rushed to finish it but, at any rate, it was unsatisfying and a disservice to the strength of the rest of the story.

WHAT!? I.. GAH! I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself until Breathless comes out. That was quite the twist at the end of Heartless, and I was left with my heart in my throat. I have no idea what anything means or who is on what side or who I want to come out on top. I was so wrapped up in the intensity of this story; I didn’t even realize I was closing in on the end until there were no pages left to turn.

I’m gonna be really honest here; I’m still really unsure how I feel about Aria and Carter. I feel guilty for loving them together since their started relationship is completely out of a hostage situation. This series is so reminiscent of CJ Roberts’ Dark Duet, and my heart is just as torn about both couples. I love every second they’re together, to the point I almost forget the circumstances Aria is living under, then when Aria is alone my heart breaks for her, and all I want is for her to be able to flee. I’m so torn, so confused, so desperate for an easy answer but I don’t think there will ever be one. I am in knots over this book and I don’t anticipate them loosening for a long time.

Between the power exchange between Aria and Carter, the war, her feelings and anticipation of what is going to happen to her family, and the feelings they’re both starting to develop, the tension was sky-high in this novel. Every single interaction between all of the characters felt charged, ready to explode. There were so many things they all wanted needed to say, but couldn’t; it felt as if there was an entire second story being told in the undercurrent of body language and glances. It was intense and fascinating how Ms. Winters was able to convey that feeling so clearly without making it awkward and obvious.

Heartless was exceptional, from the moment it picked up right where Merciless had ended until it left me reeling with that shocking ending, there wasn’t a moment’s rest for the reader. Everything about the book was so heightened because the situation is so extreme, and Ms. Winters did an excellent job of keeping the anticipation ramped up to a fever point throughout the entirety of the book. It’s going to be a while before I’m going to be able to fully come to terms with everything that has happened to Aria and Carter and decide exactly how I feel about their twisted story.

Heartless is the second book in W. Winters’ Merciless Saga. These books are not standalones and must be read in order, with each book picking up right where the previous one ended. We were first introduced to the world of Merciless in Little Liar and Possessive, but those books do not need to be read for comprehension of this series. Heartless is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Aria and Carter.

Willow Winters continues to impress me with her highly artistic romantic suspense novels. I appreciate the flow of her work and how even the more aggressive, action-packed scenes have a certain grace and fluidity to them most suspense novels don’t. I find myself both desperate to find out how her books will end and not wanting them to be over because her prose is so beautiful I don’t want to leave her words.

I’m feeling torn about this book, likely because I didn’t realize this wasn’t a standalone.  In my defense, there is no mention of a series or any other indication of Merciless having a cliffhanger.  That being said, the story was compelling, and I was completely invested in it for the entirety of the novel.

I hated to love or loved to hate, I’m not sure – it’s a fine line, Carter.  He was awful.  At this point, I’m really on the fence about him.  He’s mean, he’s demeaning, he’s cruel, but even with all that there is still something in him, small moments of compassion, the fact he was forced into a future he didn’t choose, that makes me want to like him.  Carter was quite an enigma in Merciless, and I’m hoping to figure out more about who he is in Heartless.

Aria isn’t much better, though I do feel more sympathetic toward her.  Her ups and downs, backs and forths, are frustrating.  I feel like I never know what she’s going to do or how she’s going to react in a situation, while I understood her motivations I didn’t understand much else about her.  Her paradoxical behavior was intriguing and understandable given her extreme circumstances.  I do hope that we’ll see more stability from her in the next book.

The relationship between Carter and Aria is tough to stomach.  There is such a disparity between their statuses and the power they had in their relationship; it was hard to decipher what was chemistry, what was Carter exerting his will control over Aria, and what was Aria’s self-preservation.  It was dark, twisted, and taboo but still oh so fascinating.  I felt dirty – in the best way – while I was reading this book because I was rooting for them so hard, even when I knew I should want Aria to have a choice in her life.

Merciless enraptured me.  I couldn’t consume it fast enough, even when I knew I was coming to the end and there were nowhere near enough pages left to complete the story.  The pacing was spot on, between the stuff going on with the ‘war’ Carter has been pulled into, to Aria’s imprisonment, to Carter’s history, there were so many moving parts I needed the next morsel of information as much as I needed my next breath.

Willow Winters is a gritty, intense writer.  Her books always leave me reeling and clamoring for what might be coming next.  She is excellent at building tension to a fever pitch and letting it linger to the point of discomfort.  I love the rawness she exhibits in her prose, it lends well to the types of stories she writes.  There hasn’t been a book of hers I’ve read and not wanted more of, but never so much as I did with Merciless, I’m going to be anxiously awaiting the release of Heartless.

Possessive by Willow Winters ~ RELEASE BOOST

From USA Today bestselling author Willow Winters, comes a provocative, standalone, contemporary romance.

Some men are born with a black heart and a tainted soul.
I never liked to admit it back then; I thought I could outrun who I am and lie to myself.
But I accept the truth now.

It’s in my blood and in my bones. In every impure thought and desire.
I tried to leave. To do the right thing and walk away from my past.
But then she came back into my life.

Stumbling towards me and looking up at me as if I’m the one she’s been looking for all this time.
As if I could be her savior and take her pain away.
If only she knew.

She turns me into what I hate most about myself.
Selfish, ruthless, possessive.
I tried to be a good man. To be cold and distant and warn her away.

She should have taken the hint and run.
She didn’t…
And now she’s mine.

After reading She Asked for It, I was desperate to get my hands on Daniel’s story.  He was an intriguing side character in that book, and I longed to find out more about his history and motivations throughout the book.  There was no way I could anticipate just how complex his life was or exactly where his story would lead.

Possessive is a standalone novel, though it has ties to other books Willow Winters has written and is the jumping off point for an upcoming novel the crossover with the She Asked for It is negligible, and that book is not necessary for the understanding of this novel.  I have a feeling I’m going to be glad to have read Possessive before reading Merciless.  Possessive is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Addison and Daniel.  There are also a couple of surprise narrators toward the end.  There are a number of flashbacks that help put Addison and Daniel’s relationship into perspective.

The way time passed in Possessive was deceptive.  Everything happened over the course of only a few weeks, yet there were years of hurt pain and secrets between Addison and Daniel.  And I felt each of those years of loss, loneliness, and love while I was reading.  It felt like a slow-burn romance while having the present timeline of a much quicker love story.  That push and pull of the past and present made their story feel even more desperate and unique that it already was.

The history, the loved ones, the guilt Addison and Daniel shared made this book.  Their backstory and their shared loss, had it been any different – any less momentous – it would have made this into something I may have hated.  Their interactions in the present weren’t always kind, often bordering on cruel, but with the knowledge of what they’d experienced, those moments felt very intimate and apropos to the development of their love.  They needed those moments to hate one another to heal the wounds they’d suffered with for so long.

I wish the end of this book, of Daniel and Addison’s story, in particular, had been more fleshed out.  I felt like their story was ended rather abruptly in favor of putting the pieces in motion for Daniel’s brother’s book.  I have no doubts about the state of their relationship, but it still seemed unfinished.

Willow Winters is a powerful writer.  She’s able to wring out emotions and make her readers live in her books.  With each book I read of hers I feel a deeper connection with who she is as a writer.  The way she always makes me feel slightly uncomfortable, a little off kilter when I’m reading her books is – gah – it’s enthralling.  I know every time I pick up a new Willow Winters novel I’m going to be in for a ride, and it won’t be easy or predictable.
