But this is a galaxy where they are ceasing to exist, and Dominion owns the last one in the known universe, using him to take over and destroy billions of lives.

An encounter with the last Nero shows Nova her future: it’s with him. She will stand by his side one day, her fingers laced through his, love and adoration in both their eyes, a dark queen to his evil, pawn king.

GIVEAWAY ~ Three Heart Echo by Keary Taylor ~ New Release

The demented thing is that this evolved from the most sickly sweet, heart-wrenching love story you’ve ever heard. I went to Sully because I just couldn’t get over Jack’s murder. I couldn’t deal.

Iona came to me for the same reason most did: because there was no closure. A love cut too short. She begged me to open the gate between the living and the dead.

We should have left it shut.

This. This is not a love story. This is a possession story. A story of lies. A story of two faces. This is a story of death and violent echoes from the other side.

And there will be no happy endings.

Goodreads / Amazon

There’s been this look of dread and apprehension in Sully’s eyes since the moment he opened the church doors to find me. It’s been growing into something hard and cold moment by moment. But with my revelation, it solidifies into something heavy as the world.

“Sit down,” he says in something very close to a growl. He points to one of the two chairs set in the middle of the room.

I sit, dread and fear and anticipation climbing in my throat.

Sully closes the door, and locks it.

The huge man stalks around the room, lighting a match to first one candle, then taking it to light the others. The room gradually grows lighter until a dozen of them are lit, and I can finally see more than a foot in front of me.

I rub my hands over my arms, because suddenly I realize that it is freezing in here, despite the roaring fire Sully has kept in the other room.

Deep, slow breathing pulls my attention back to the man.

He stands in one corner, before a solitary, lit candle. His back is turned to me, his hulking shoulders blocking out most of the light, casting him in an eerie glow. His long hair hangs around his face. He breathes, slow, deep. But there’s a quiver to it. Something unsteady.

I want to ask him if he’s okay. To ask what is the matter, because everything in me screams that there is.

But I’m too petrified to open my mouth.

A draft pushes through the edges of the covered window, sending the flames dancing atop the candles. A shiver works its way down my spine.

Sully suddenly steps back from the corner and drops down into the seat across from me. He holds his hands out.

“The watch,” he says nodding to his right hand. “Your hand.” He indicates the left.

I can’t stop shaking. I set the pocket watch in his hand, and trembling, I rest my hand in his other. He closes his fingers around mine, fully engulfing it with his size.

Sully’s eyes slide closed. I watch his face, seeing something come over it. Like he’s slipping underwater, preparing to hold his breath against certain death. His breathing becomes very light and shallow. His entire body becomes very still. The temperature of his hand drops.

The pain in my chest comes to a peak and I realize just how hard my heart is beating. My hands are slick with sweat. I lean forward in my seat, far too close to Sully’s face for comfort.

My breath is held.

“Jack,” Sully says, his voice low and deep. I jump when he speaks, startled, a bent twig on the verge of snapping. “I know you’ve moved on, but I have someone here who wishes to speak to you. If you wish to speak to her, please show yourself.”

Sully is quiet for a long moment afterward that seems to roll into an eternity of anticipation.

“What’s happening?” I whisper, a cloud of breath billowing out from me.

Sully lets out a slow, long shh, his face suddenly going peaceful.

All the blood in my body drops into my feet.

“Iona,” Sully says. There’s something breathy in the way he says my name, something disbelieving and hopeful and so full of everything.

“Jack?” I breathe as tears spring into my eyes.

“Yes,” Sully says, and he suddenly opens his eyes. But they only meet mine for a moment. They shift off to the right, next to the window, by his shoulder.

Goosebumps flash onto my skin as my eyes follow Sully’s.

“Can you see him?” I whisper. I want to shy back, to put some distance between myself and the ghost only he can see. But I’m also dying inside, knowing he is hidden from my eyes.

“Yes.”

****SPOILERS FOR HOUSE OF PAWNS (BOOK 2) INCLUDED****

I was granted the distinct honor of reading a copy of House of Kings well before release, courtesy of author extraordinaire, Keary Taylor.

House of Pawns had left Alivia dying a mortal death and us all wondering just what was in store for her in her new life.  It also left us with so many questions regarding her involvement with not just Ian and King Cyrus, but the spy, Raheem, as well.  While House of Pawns wasn’t the worst cliffhanger I had ever experienced, I had been eagerly anticipating the publication of House of Royals.

House of Kings, once again, thrust us right back in the middle of everything going on in Silent Bend.  There was no warm up, no hesitancy.  It was much the same with King Cyrus’ consideration with Alivia and adjusting to her new normal.  She was tossed right in the deep end, and she had to figure out how to sink or swim.

The King’s ‘games’ were alluded to in House of Pawns, and there was some insight into just how sadistic he might be.  Any preconceived notions we had of him were nothing compared to actually seeing him, and his games, in action, though.  Cyrus spared no consideration for anyone, friend, foe, or trusted comrade.  He was equally harsh with every player.  Never have I seen someone be so nonchalant while carrying out the horrors he did.  It made him all the more frightening, being so regal and composed while simultaneously acting incredibly vicious and underhanded.  It was a thing to behold.

There were moments when Alivia, and the choices she made, were just as frightening as the King.  Her ability to rise above and beyond every challenge the King through at her was fascinating.  Not many, if any, would have been able to hold their own in such stressful situations, but Alivia did.  Further showing just how strong she is.  The things she had been through, and continued to experience were awful; she was able to rise above her circumstances and do everything she could to ensure the safety of her House.  I’m still in awe of Alivia, leader of the House of Conrath.

As has been the case with each book of the House of Royals series, this book was full of revelations, secrets, twists, and the unexpected.  Each one weaving seamlessly into the next; leaving us with an intricately woven tapestry of deception, pain, fear, and most importantly, hope.

Keary Taylor did not disappoint in House of Kings.  She is a masterful storyteller; she paints such a vivid world with her words.  As with every other book of hers I’ve read, I feel as if I am standing right next to each character.  Like I can feel the snow crunch beneath my feet.  Like I can feel the silk of a dress beneath my fingers.  An author who can put you that far into a story is one that can not be missed.

House of Royals is the first book in Keary Taylor’s new House of Royals series.  In this book, we are introduced to a world of vampires that is both familiar and different than the vampires we have all known and loved.   In a very short time Alivia learns, not only who her father is, but that she has inherited so much more than his unseemly amounts of money, mansion, and staff.  She has also inherited an immortal life, more potential enemies than she could have imagined, and a neglected royal legacy.

As is the case with most books that are the first in a series, we are lead down a path of discovering and learning about the new world in which the story is based.  Unlike so many of these books, however, it never feels stagnant.  Each piece of the new world that we learn about draws the reader in further.  As I was absorbing every detail of these new vampires, their history, and their traditions, I was more and more engrossed in the book.  When I arrived at the climax, I was shocked that I was so near the end of the book, as I was so intensely involved that I could barely believe that I was nearly finished reading.

Each character in House of Royals was incredibly distinct, from almost the first moment they appeared on the page I felt like I knew them.  While we were never given a personality rundown (thank goodness!) there were enough cues, in the form of reactions and body language, that I felt very well acquainted with the major players, and most of the minor ones too.

Alivia Ryan was everything that I love in a heroine.  She was strong and independent, a little cynical, and determined to do right by herself.  I absolutely loved how defiant she was, even in the face of great danger.  She was sure of her next step and willing to risk everything to do what she thought was right.  Even in moments where she may have been scared, she was far stronger than most would be.

Ian Ward didn’t have the most auspicious introduction, but it was quite a memorable one.  He was quite happy to start off on the wrong foot with Alivia and remain on that foot.  As the story progressed, his initial transgressions were most definitely forgiven and forgotten.  He was wonderfully selfless and protective to a fault.  I was in love with the way that he cared for the people he loved.  Ian Ward may have been a tiny bit vengeful, but he was far more loveable.

Keary Taylor is a wordsmith who has yet to disappoint me.  Her writing in this book is, as ever, spot on and completely sets the tone of the story.  As the world around her characters changes, there is an almost palpable change in the atmosphere of the book.  At the beginning of the book, the words are tinged with nervous energy and a hint of excitement and by the end there is an ominous cloud that seems to blanket each syllable written.  I have a deep love for authors who are able to give me that sense of aura when I’m reading.  Ms. Taylor will continue to be one of those authors who I continually return to with no second guessing.  The quality of books that she puts out continues to exceed my expectations, and I don’t see that ever changing.
