SPOTLIGHT REVIEW – Iniquity by Amy A. Bartol

Iniquity CoverI gasp as my body curls toward Brennus like a flower to the sun, for the pleasure of it. He holds me close to him. His nose grazes the length of my neck. He breathes me in. I feel the roar and rush of my heartbeat. I’m his toy; his energy streams into me. He winds the invisible key in my back and the euphoria ratchets and coils inside of me: tick…tick…tick…

Another wicked surge of energy flows from him into me. Pain. Pleasure. Bliss. My jaw unclenches as my lips part. I make a small, breathy sound as we dance. Brennus responds with something close to a growl. “Ye’re killing me, mo chroí,” he murmurs. His hand moves down my back infusing me with a golden glow of power. My wings punch violently from me, tearing a hole in my day dress. They spread wide, like a red stain beyond my pale skin. I’m dancing now for the thrill of it. I follow his lead.

As the song comes to an end, Brennus kisses my throat. He whispers in my ear, “When ye get back, come find me, mo chroí. I’ve healed ye…now wake up and banjax whoever banished ye here…”

Iniquity is the EPIC and UNFORGETTABLE conclusion to my all-time favorite series. I have never encountered a series that resonated with me like The Premonition Series. If you follow my reviews, you know that I was seriously hesitant to entertain the fantasy/paranormal genre prior to starting this series. Let it be said, that my apprehension was laid to rest. Whether that is solely the work of this author is yet to be determined. But Amy Bartol made me believe there are journeys worth taking and preconceived notions about genre should never hold me back.

This book is the culmination of the battle of good vs. evil revealed in book 1 of the series, Inescapable. There are new characters to hate, new creatures to make you cringe and twists you could not possibly have seen coming. The WOW Factor is colossal and I applaud Amy for the countless gasps, shivers, and heart pounding emotions I endured throughout this book. EPIC does not even come close to being an accurate description for the surreal experience of Iniquity.

Evie has endured challenges and heartbreak throughout her journey. But she has matured, overcome and grown exponentially. At this apex of her evolvement you will find an amazingly dynamic creature full of unsurpassed passion and a penchant for kicking ass. She is the epitome of a true heroine and I am in awe of the compassion, dedication and courage she displayed.

I could spend countless hours talking about all the males of this series but I don’t want to give anything away. Suffice it to say there will be plenty of Russell, Reed, Brennus and Xavier for everyone as the battle for Evie’s forever comes to a head. And for those of you who love Da Fellas like me, you’ll get a dose of dem as well.

This book effectively wraps up the majority of the conflict encountered throughout the series. While Evie’s forever is solidified, there is some ambiguity in the ending that is loaded with possibility and that just makes me giddy with anticipation. I am sad this series is over as I am not ready to leave Evie’s world. But I am excited for whatever Amy has in the works.

I live in Michigan with my husband and our two sons. My family is very supportive of my writing. When I’m writing, they often bring me the take-out menu so that I can call and order them dinner. They listen patiently when I talk about my characters like they’re real. They rarely roll their eyes when I tell them I’ll only be a second while I finish writing a chapter…and then they take off their coats. They ask me how the story is going when I surface after living for hours in a world of my own making. They have learned to accept my “writing uniform” consisting of a slightly unflattering pink fleece jacket, t-shirt, and black yoga pants. And they smile at my nerdy bookishness whenever I try to explain urban fantasy to them. In short, they get me, so they are perfect and I am blessed.

5 STAR REVIEW – Sea of Stars (Kricket #2) by Amy Bartol

SOS Cover

Title: Sea of Stars (Kricket #2)

Author: Amy Bartol

Genre: YA Fantasy/Paranormal/Sci-fi Romance

ALP Synopsis1Eighteen-year-old Kricket Hollowell was looking for her place in the world when she discovered that the universe was bigger—and more dangerous—than she had ever dreamed. Now, whisked across space to the planet Ethar, Kricket learns that her genetic ability to see the future makes her a sought-after commodity…and the catalyst for war between her star-crossed parents’ clans. According to Alameedan prophecy, one house will rise to power and the other will be completely wiped out, and Kricket’s precognition is believed to be the weapon that will tip the scales.

A target of both the Rafe and the Alameeda houses, Kricket finds protection—and a home—in the arms of Trey, her Etharian bodyguard-turned-boyfriend. But her visions of what’s to come disturb her deeply, especially since she must discover whether the gift of foresight will allow her to rewrite the future, or if her fate is as immovable as the stars.

Sea of Stars resumes where Under Different Stars left off. Uncertainty prevails with new villains to hate, new characters to question, and gripping intensity woven into Kricket’s journey. It was completely unpredictable, captivating and full of moments that left my heart racing.

Kricket is witty, determined and unpredictable. That makes her simultaneously vulnerable and powerful. The allies can’t control her, the enemies are charmed by her, and Kricket has not yet discovered the magnitude of her powers. Though fear is present just beneath the surface, she wears courage like a badass heroine. Trey’s determination to protect Kricket is fierce and unwavering. The tension between them continues to escalate as they are thrust from one intense situation to the next in this ongoing battle to capture Kricket and harness her powers.

I continue to be enchanted by this story and these characters. Though I am completely smitten with Trey, my heart keeps reminding me there is so much to Kyon that we just don’t know yet. His motive and intent are among the many things that have my mind racing with the possibilities of what will happen next. I am anxious for  the next installment, Darken the Stars (Kricket #3), which is set to release September 8, 2015 from 47 North, an Amazon Imprint.

REVIEW – Under Different Stars (Kricket #1) by Amy Bartol

UDS Cover

Title: Under Different Stars (Kricket #1)

Author: Amy Bartol

Genre: YA Fantasy/Paranormal/Sci-fi Romance

ALP Synopsis1

Kricket Hollowell is normally not one to wish upon stars; she believes they’re rarely in her favor. Well versed at dodging caseworkers from Chicago’s foster care system, the past few years on her own have made Kricket an expert at the art of survival and blending in. With her 18th birthday fast approaching, she dreams of the day when she can stop running and find what her heart needs most: a home.

Trey Allairis hates Earth and doubts that anyone from his world can thrive here. What he’s learning of Kricket and her existence away from her true home only confirms his theory. But, when he and Kricket lie together under the stars of Ethar, counting them all may be easier than letting her go.

Kyon Ensin’s secrets number the stars; he knows more about Kricket’s gifts than anyone and plans to possess her because of them. He also knows she’s more valuable than any fire in the night sky. He’ll move the heavens and align them all in order to make her his own.

When everything in their world can be broken, will Kricket rely upon love to save her under different stars?

Under Different Stars is a captivating adventure set in a futuristic environment with unworldly creatures and one human who captivates the masses. It delivers a thrilling journey of self-discovery as Kricket learns her life is far from insignificant. The intense chemistry between Kricket and Trey adds a nice twist to this thought provoking tale. If you enjoy stories where the battle of good vs. evil transpires in a modern and unpredictable fashion, Under Different Stars is the book for you.

I was mesmerized by the uniqueness of this story, especially since this is way outside my “comfort zone”. I’ve had a personal hang-up with fantasy/paranormal genre due to a preconceived notion that they are often too complex to enjoy. That is NOT the case with Under Different Stars. Amy Bartol’s spectacular writing produced moments where I lost track of time due to my complete and utter enthrallment with this story. I was enchanted by these characters and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Undoubtedly, Amy has shattered my preconceived notions. If Amy writes it, I’ll read it!!
