Strong Enough

by Melanie Harlow & David Romanov

Genre: Contemporary MM Romance

Publication Date: June 19, 2017

I wasn’t looking for Derek Wolfe.

I wasn’t looking for anybody. All I wanted was to start a new life in America. But when I found myself stranded here with no place to go, he came to my rescue, offering me a place to stay.

He’s smart, successful, and sexy as hell—I can barely sleep knowing he’s right down the hall. And when the chemistry between us explodes one night with fierce, fiery passion, it’s hard to deny there’s something real between us.

But he does.

He says he was drunk. He says it was a one-time thing. He says he’s not into guys and what we did meant nothing.

He’s lying. Because it happened again, and again, and again. And it’s better every time.

I know we could be good together, and I want the chance to try, but I’m done hiding. If he’s not strong enough to admit the truth, I’ll have to be strong enough to walk away.

Excerpt:

Figuring I’d had enough booze to blunt his effect on me, I rolled up the sleeves of my black button-down shirt and moved next to him. “I’ll help you.”

“Okay.”

I caught him trying to not to look at my wrists and forearms, and it made me smile. How does it feel to want someone and have to hide it? “You wash, I’ll dry?”

“Sounds good.”

We worked in silence, shoulder to shoulder, and I found myself increasingly—and disturbingly—pleased at the thought of him being attracted to me and being forced to conceal it. It was fucking horrible of me to take pleasure in his discomfort, but I liked being secretly wanted. Being illicitly desired. Being the object of his covert glances and maybe even his darkest, dirtiest thoughts. I let our arms touch more than necessary, as thrilled by the physical contact as I was by the thought of what it might be doing to him.

For there is no man who does not sin.

My dick started to get hard, clearly unbothered by the whiskey that was breaking down my inhibitions, pushing past all my defenses, and letting my imagination run wild.

What’s in that gorgeous head of yours, Maxim? What’s behind those cobalt eyes? What would you do to me, if I let you? What would you let me do to you?

“Carolyn is so nice,” he said, handing me the last serving dish left to be dried.

What? He was thinking about Carolyn right now? He wasn’t supposed to be thinking about Carolyn—I was, goddammit!

But I wasn’t. “Yeah.”

He turned off the water. Rested his wet hands on the edge of the sink. “I didn’t realize you had a girlfriend.”

And I heard it in his voice—the slightest edge of jealousy, so faint I might never have noticed it had I not been so hyperaware of everything about him right now. I fucking loved it.

“She’s not my girlfriend.”

“Oh.” Now there was confusion. “I guess I misunderstood.”

“She wants to be my girlfriend.”

Silence.

Of course there was silence. Maxim would never ask what the problem was. But I wanted to tell him. I wanted him to know. I wanted to share the impossible longing I felt with one person who might understand it.

“The problem is me.”

He was completely still. Before I could stop myself, I covered his right hand with my left. “Sometimes I don’t know what I want.”

He yanked his hand from beneath mine and we faced each other.

For the first time tonight, I looked him right in the eye. Nothing around us existed for me anymore. I heard only his breath. Smelled only his skin. Saw only his guarded expression.

I had to have him.

Whitney’s Four Star Review:

4 stars for a sexy m/m novel from writing duo Melanie Harlow and David Romanov!

Melanie is one of my go to authors and when I heard she was doing a m/m book with David, I knew I’d be reading. I’m not always a fan of the whole writing duo thing and often end up disappointed. Especially when one of the authors is a newbie.

And while this book isn’t my favorite of Melanie’s, I was not disappointed at all. Even pleasantly surprised by a lot of it.

What worked? Maxim and Derek were oh so sexy together. Scorching hot. The tension was great and when they finally get together, I’d recommend making sure you’re not reading in public. Or around your kids. Ha. I also enjoyed Maxim’s character a lot. He projected a fresh innocence and inherent kindness that I adored. But he also stood up for himself and had a stubborn streak which gave him some depth. Derek’s sister, Ellen, stole many of the scenes she was in and I loved her. And the writing was actually quite good. Better than I would have expected with parts being from a new author whose first language is not English (sorry, David!).

What didn’t work? I thought the storyline itself was a little boring sometimes. Like maybe not quite enough actually happened. And I don’t know whether I really liked Derek or not. He has some great moments but he’s also kind of a jerk. And his emotional journey is kind of the point of the book so I’d like to have seen a little more from an epilogue. Maybe them a few more years down the line with a family. I can understand why this wasn’t included as it would almost be another story in itself. But I felt a little shortchanged by not seeing their relationship develop even more. As much as Derek wants to be a father, his personality is so not conducive (other than his kindness) so that would be a funny short story in the future maybe?? I feel bad for picking on him now because he really is very kind and his willingness to help Maxim really melted my heart.

So overall, I was pleased with the story and I seriously love that Maxim’s character is based quite a bit on David himself. If you’re a fan of m/m, this is a great read. If you’re a Melanie fan, this one isn’t as light or funny but you’ll still walk away happy.

“Mick?” she whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Are you feeling something?”

“You could say that,” he murmured. “You?”

She licked her lips and he nearly groaned. “I think so,” she whispered.

“That’s good.”

“Are you going to kiss me?”

He cupped her face, let his thumbs trace her jawbone, his fingers sinking into her silky waves. “No,” he said quietly. “And not because I don’t want to, but because when I do, I want to know you’re ready. That you’ll feel it.”

She sighed. “Guys do whatever they want all the time, no emotions necessary. I want that skill.” Another shaky breath escaped her, and since they were literally an inch apart, they shared air for a single heartbeat during which neither of them moved.

Her gaze dropped to his mouth. “Okay, so I’m definitely feeling things.” She hesitated and then her hands came up to his chest. “Maybe we should test it out to be sure.”

God, she was the sweetest temptation he’d ever met, and he wanted nothing more than to cover her mouth with his. Instead, he brushed his mouth to her cheek.

“Please, Mick,” she whispered, her exhale warming his throat.

He loved the “please,” and he wanted to do just that more than anything. But when she tried to turn her head into his, to line up their mouths, he gently tightened his grip, dragging his mouth along her smooth skin instead, making his way to her ear.

“Not yet,” he whispered, letting his lips brush over her earlobe and the sensitive skin beneath it.

She moaned and clutched him. “Why not?”

It took every ounce of control he had to lift his head and meet her gaze. “Because I want to make sure you’re really with me, that you’re feeling everything I’m feeling. That there’ll be no doubt, no regrets.”

“You sure have a lot of requirements.”

He laughed. And she was right, it was all big talk for a guy who didn’t do relationships anymore. Still, he forced himself to step back and shut the passenger door.

As he rounded the hood to the driver’s side, he tried to remind himself of all the reasons she was a bad idea. He lived two hundred miles away and he was hoping to move his mom up by him and never come back here. Not to mention that Quinn lived an equal two hundred miles in the opposite direction and she was in a deeply vulnerable place. No way would he even think about taking advantage of that.

But when he slid behind the wheel and their eyes locked, he realized that while his mind could stand firm, the rest of his body wasn’t on board with the in-control program.

Whitney’s 4.5 Star Review

Jill Shalvis is back with her magic in a brand new series! I adored Lost and Found sisters, the story of one woman’s journey to find herself after her world is rocked with secret after secret.

Quinn is a great heroine and one of my favorite Jill leading ladies in quite a while. In fact, all of the main ladies in this story are pretty awesome. Even lost, Quinn shows strength and a willingness to always be a great person. She’s a caretaker through and through which is possibly why I loved her so much. Mick is a sexy guy who wasn’t looking for a relationship until he met Quinn. After a bit of flirting and some tension, these two set upon a rocky road where they’re both struggling to decide what they want from their futures.

The novel is actually told with three POVS; Quinn, Mick and a surprise who I won’t reveal. I loved the way the author wove together the three main characters with a few others who are sure to featured more heavily in the series going forward. Mick’s ex girlfriend is a hoot, as are several other side characters. The richness Jill can bring to a town and it’s inhabitants is consuming for me as a reader. I always want to move to the fictional towns she writes about.

Is this book a stand alone? Meh. Sort of. Quinn and Mick have resolution but there are open ended storylines for other characters and for town drama. So I suppose you could read this and stop the series (though I don’t know why!) but I bet it won’t make sense to skip this book and try to read the others as they release. I definitely recommend picking this one up if you’re a fan of Jill’s previous work. I’ve seen this billed as women’s fiction but it felt quite a bit like a traditional romance to me.

About Jill Shalvis:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jill Shalvis lives in a small town in the Sierras full of quirky characters. Roommates with Benefits by Nicole Williams

iBooks / Amazon / Nook

goodreads-badge.png

Synopsis

Soren Decker. He’s the epitome of the “bad boy, good man” persona. The best of both worlds. The worst of them too. He’s the type of guy most girls would not mind sharing a confined space with, except my new roommate isn’t all swagger and chiseled abs.

He’s bossy. Messy. Cocky. Infuriating. Doesn’t believe in personal space. Has no qualms about roaming the apartment with a loincloth-sized towel cinched around his waist. Seems under the delusion he’s my personal protector (refer back to infuriating). He plays college baseball and holds down a part-time job—I don’t know where he finds the time to get on my nerves.

We’re got nothing in common . . . except for one thing. Our attraction to one another. And in six hundred square feet of shared space, the tension only has so much room to grow before one of us gives in to temptation. But really, what chance do a couple of young kids chasing their dreams in the big city have of making it?

Since Soren claims I know squat about sports (he might have a semi-point), here’s a stat for him—one in a million. That’s our odds.

Excerpt

“Coming in,” I announced, opening the door and stepping inside. A plume of steam rolled over me, instantly coating my skin in a hot, dewy shield. “Hot shower?”
“Hell of a lot better than the cold one I took a couple of nights ago.”
His voice echoed off the walls as I focused on squeezing a glob of toothpaste onto my brush. It was difficult. I found myself quite distracted by the knowledge he was naked behind that thin shower curtain, a whole three feet away.
Just as I was about to stick my toothbrush into my mouth, the shower cranked off, the curtain whipping open right after.
Soren. Wet. Exposed.
Giant.
My eyes clamped shut, but it wasn’t fast enough. From the low chuckle he gave, he hadn’t missed my two-second gape.
“Soren!”
“Sorry. Water got cold.”
I gave him a few seconds to cover up before I opened my eyes and got back to brushing my teeth. He hadn’t covered up though.
“What are you doing? Grab a towel.” My arm flailed in the direction of where we kept our fresh towels hanging from the rack. My eyes felt like they were about to go crossed from staying focused on my reflection instead of his naked one in the same mirror.
“Out of fresh towels. Haven’t gotten around to the laundry.” He moved up beside me at the sink, reaching for his own toothbrush. He was standing so close, his wet arm was brushing against mine.
Don’t look down. Don’t look down. Don’t look at the giant—
Crap. I looked.
He was grinning at me as he brushed his teeth, my face crimson thanks to what I’d glanced at.
“See anything you like?”
My body was still buzzing from what I’d seen that I liked. I kind of hated him for calling me out on it though. I kind of even hated him for having so much to like.
“I know what you’re doing.” My eyebrow rounded as I got to work brushing my teeth too.
He spit in the sink, somehow winding up closer to me when he leaned back up. “Air drying?”
My eyes narrowed in the mirror at him. “Trying to change my mind.”
He stared back, brushing his teeth in all of his naked glory, a cocky tenor to his expression. Once he finished brushing, he rinsed his toothbrush and turned toward the door.
“I don’t need to change your mind,” he said, pausing when he was directly behind me.
When he turned, I swore I could feel his arms coming around me, pulling me into the shelter of his strong body. An involuntary shudder spilled down my back. He didn’t miss that either.
“I just need you to speak it instead of lying about it.” His eyes dropped to the back of my neck, where I knew he could see the raised flesh. I knew, because one side of his mouth lifted.
Bracing my hands on the sink, I didn’t blink as I locked eyes with him in the mirror. “It takes a lot more than washboard abs and a giant . . .” Crap. Something else. “Ego to get my attention.”
Soren leaned forward, his hands framing around the outsides of mine, his arms running the length of mine. His chest didn’t touch my back, but I could feel its expanse hovering above it. “I’ve already gotten your attention.” His eyes dropped from mine to my chest. Where it was rising and falling noticeably hard, my nipples pushing through my camisole. “I’m looking for something else.”
Another shudder, this one spilling down my legs. “What?”
His crooked smile changed into a cryptic one before he leaned back and opened the door. “You’ll see.”
“Soren—”
“Don’t worry. I’ll tell you when you give it to me.”
My fist curled around my toothbrush as I turned toward him. “I’m not giving you anything.”
“You’re giving me something right now.” He didn’t glance back before leaving the bathroom. Did he really need to have that nice of an ass when he already had a glorious package? I was screwed. “This point goes to Decker.”

 Whitney’s 3 Star Review

I’ve always adored Nicole Williams stories.  With her charming book boyfriends and too good to be true yet sweet storylines (perfect for getting lost in!), she’s an auto-buy author for me.  And while I did enjoy many things about Roommate with Benefits, I found this book to be lacking some of Nicole’s normal magic.  Not that I didn’t enjoy it because I did.  Just not my favorite from her.
My main problem was really with Hayden, the heroine.  I sympathized with her past to a certain degree but found her to be kind of a brat and pretty insensitive to Soren’s feelings.  I kinda wanted to smack her on the head and say that he could have done better than the way she treated him.  She had her moments, of course where I found myself chuckling or cheering for her but I just never really loved her.
Soren is great though perhaps a little too flawed in the way he is portrayed.  I adored him but sometimes thought he and Hadley had more of a brother/sister relationship rather than a love interest.  And his virginity… not super believable.  However, setting those things aside he is a great guy.  Honest, loyal, fun… very swoony.  Even if he won’t pick up his laundry.  Heehee.
The story itself is fine, moves pretty quickly and I really loved the addition of Soren’s family. His brothers are hilarious!  Nicole has always impressed so even though this book wasn’t my favorite from her, I still can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve next.

BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW! Gone with the Ghost by Erin McCarthy

Gone With the Ghost (Murder By Design, book 1)

by Erin McCarthy

Date of Publication: May 23, 2017

Bailey Burke has had a rough six months—it’s not easy thinking your romantic overtures toward your best friend caused him to kill himself. Except that’s exactly what happened. Ryan is very much dead, having shot himself with his own police-issued gun. Guilt and grief shouldn’t cause hallucinations though, but six months after Ryan went into the ground, Bailey is freaking out and swearing his ghost is standing in her kitchen. Which he is…

Ryan claims he didn’t commit suicide, but was murdered, and he needs Bailey to help him find his killer so he can earn his ticket out of purgatory. Which contrary to national opinion is not their hometown of Cleveland. Ryan’s counting on a stairway to heaven, as opposed to wings, since that might be a little unmanly for a cop, even a dead one.

An expert in home design, with her own staging business, Bailey can tell you where to place a couch to improve flow and comfort, but solving a crime? Not her area of expertise. But with help from Ryan’s former partner, Marner, she is unraveling the mystery of what happened to Ryan that day… and unwittingly putting herself in grave danger.

Whitney’s 3.5 Star Review

Gone with the Ghost is a mystery novel from an author I’ve previously enjoyed reading romance from. I wanted something a little different than my standard romantic genre and hoped to find a new series to look forward to.

Overall, I was pleased with this book. It’s definitely not traditional romance but does have some romantic elements to it. The main two characters are Bailey, a slightly down on her luck former crime scene analysis turned home stager/designer. She doesn’t like blood after all!

Bailey is hung up on her best friend, Ryan, who died six months ago. So when Ryan appears in Bailey’s house she is quite overwhelmed. Ryan doesn’t know exactly what’s going on but he does know that his death was mysterious and he can’t cross over until he has helped find out who killed him.

So now for the good and the bad. Bailey is pretty awesome. She’s very ‘real’. Flawed, a little awkward, smart… I really enjoyed her character. Ryan not so much. I know he’s a ghost but he’s kind of an ass. I can’t give too much away or it will ruin the story but he’s definitely no romantic hero so I’m kinda glad he’s dead. I was disappointed in the direction his character took and that Bailey’s feelings towards him were never really acknowledged. I felt like there a hole in the story there but I can’t reveal too much or it would be spoilery!

There is a love interest for Bailey who we get glimpses of and I assume that we will get to see their relationship over the course of the series. Like I said, this book has romantic elements but it is not a love story so don’t expect a conclusion as it’s not the focus of the story.

The premise surrounding Ryan’s death and subsequent ‘who done it?’, I also enjoyed. I felt kind of like I was watching a crime drama on TV. The feel of the novel is a balance between light hearted and serious. It’s not particularly gory but there are some pretty tense moments, some sad moments and some funny ones too.

I went into the novel with no real expectations and I will probably pick up the next book in the series as well when it comes out. And don’t expect a perfect ending tied with a bow. There are some questions that get answered and many new ones to explore in book two with a new mystery to solve

BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW – Sex in the Sticks by Sawyer Bennett

Wake up and feel the wood! In the first of a series of irresistible standalone romances from New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett, a city girl rediscovers love and lust in the Alaskan wilderness.

Valentine French may be the sassiest dating columnist in New York City, but the abundance of metrosexuals in her adopted metropolis is seriously cramping her style. Where are the beefy all-American boys? Hoping to find some inspiration, Val heads to Alaska, where the men outnumber the women fifteen to one and wrestle grizzly bears for sport. Or so she can only imagine. Suddenly the most eligible bachelorette in a town full of horny lumberjacks, Val is writing her best columns ever. But if she doesn’t get her nose out of her laptop, she just might miss out on Mr. Right.

Logan Burke is the sheriff of the little podunk town that Val finds so charmingly backward. He’s not that different from the guys she’s using for her little experiment; it’s just that one date would never be enough for Logan. As he listens to Val complain about love over beers in the local tavern, he realizes that she can’t see the forest for the trees. Because if she would ever give up her Prada bags and fourteen-dollar martinis, Logan would give her the only luxury that matters: his heart.

Whitney’s Four Star Review

I love the mountains, Alaska and hot bearded men so when I read the synopsis for Sex in the Sticks, I said “Where do I sign up?!”.  And oh yeah, Sawyer Bennett writes about the best, steamiest, hottest sex scenes ever.  So this book was a no brainer for me.
Our heroine, Valentine, cracked me up.  As a privileged big city girl, she was so totally unprepared for her new life in the Alaskan wilderness.  She’s a little crazy, a little funny and despite the fact that she’s a rich girl, she is very sweet and likable for most of the story.  There were a few times where she really lets loose that she got on my nerves a little but she always redeemed herself with her strength and perseverance.
And Logan… holy hotness, he is swoon worthy.  A hot guy with a heart of gold, a little touch of alpha, and did I mention he’s a cop?  Yeah, you shouldn’t even be reading this review anymore.  Just go buy the book.
But if you are still reading this, then I can tell you was entertained from page one.  There’s a good balance of sweetness, humorous and sexiness that Sawyer Bennett does so very well.  The story was fast paced and flowed well.  I loved watching Valentine tough up a little, the side characters were a ton of fun.  I don’t know who will be next up in the series but I do know that I will be reading it.
Recommended for a quick, light read!

“Mae,” Bella whispered as I walked from the changing room and stood on the elevated plinth opposite my friends and sisters. The mirror was behind me, but I did not yet dare look at my reflection. I glanced at Bella sat beside Ruth, her mother-in-law and Rider’s mama. Her eyes were filling with tears as she stared at me. Her hands were in front of her mouth.
“Do you like it?” I ran my hand over my pronounced stomach.
Bella nodded. “You are perfect,” she whispered. Ruth nodded in agreement.
I looked at Maddie. “Madds?”
She smiled warmly. “You are beautiful, Mae, this dress only enhances that. But this gown could not suit you more if you tried.”
“Styx will love it,” Lilah said and held Grace tighter on her lap.
“You look like a Disney princess,” Grace said.
A hand came down on my arm. I turned to see Beauty behind me. “You ever gonna look in the mirror, darlin’?” She smiled. This boutique belonged to a friend of Beauty’s, and Beauty had practically organized my wedding for me. I was clueless where to even begin.
“You look good, Mae.” I smiled at Letti as she sat uncomfortably on the couch. She had told me she was here to support me, but she had no opinion in such matters as wedding dress shopping. Or anything girly, she’d said affectionately.
“Turn, honey,” Lilah said and I nodded my head. I had no idea why I was so nervous. I knew that Styx loved me and I loved him. I felt as though I had been waiting for this day my whole life. That I had been waiting for the day I finally cemented him as mine. Forever mine, and me forever his.
Closing my eyes, I turned, allowing Beauty to guide me. “You ready?” she whispered. I pulled up the image of Styx in my mind. Me in his arms as we lay in bed. His large tattooed arms holding me close as we spoke. His voice gruff and deep. Then I pictured us laughing. The infamous Hangmen Mute of the Hades Hangmen, so different with me than with anybody else. To others he was aloof, silent, and menacing. But to me, he was loving, caring, and the most beautiful soul in the world.
The other half of my heart.

Synopsis

EVEN THE BROKEN, THROUGH LOVE, CAN FIND GRACE…

Secrets never stay hidden.

The burden of guilt never lifts from the heart.

Born and raised in The Order of David, Sister Phebe knows nothing but cult life. Head of the Sacred Sisters of New Zion, Phebe was groomed from childhood for one purpose: to seduce. Prized as a harlot, as a New Zion whore, Phebe is taken from the doomed cult by Meister, the notorious leader of the Aryan Brotherhood. Taken as his possession. Taken to be the woman who will obey his every sexual demand. Under his heavy hand, Phebe finds herself in a place much worse than she could ever have imagined… with absolutely no one to help. And no glimpse of hope.

Xavier ‘AK’ Deyes is content with his life as Sergeant-At-Arms of the Hades Hangmen. Leader of the infamous ‘Psycho Trio’ and ex-special ops sniper, AK knows how to fight. Experienced in warfare and schooled in military operations, AK is vital to the Hangmen. When his Vice President needs help retrieving his missing sister-in-law, Phebe, from a Klan-funded trafficking ring, AK volunteers to go in. AK remembers the redhead from New Zion. Remembers everything about her from the single time they met—her red hair, blue eyes and freckled face. But when he finds her, heavily drugged and under Meister’s control, her sorry condition causes him to remember more than the beautiful woman he once tied to a tree. Saving Phebe forces hidden demons from his past to return. A past he can never move on from, no matter how hard he tries.

As AK fights to help Phebe, and in turn she strives to help him, they realize their secret sins will never leave them alone. Kindred broken souls, they realize the only way they can be rid of their ghosts is to face them together and try to find peace.

Dark Contemporary Romance. Contains explicit sexual situations, violence, disturbingly sensitive and taboo subjects, offensive language and very mature topics. Recommended for age 18 and over.

 Excerpt

“Well?” Ky asked.
Tanner ran his hand over his head. The brother hadn’t attended one of our cookouts or slutfests in weeks. Not that he ever entertained himself with sluts—still too hard for his piece of pussy down in Mexico. He’d been busy trying to track down Meister. Unlike most of the white-power shit Tanner and Tank grew up with, this Meister was untraceable and off the grid. As much of a computer whizz kid as Tanner was, Meister was proving to be one slippery fucking snake to pin down.
“Gotta be honest, I didn’t think I was anywhere close to finding anything on this prick.” Tanner nodded toward Tank. “We knew of him, of course. I knew he had dealings with my father and uncle, just never met him myself. He’s Aryan Brotherhood, but works closely with the Klan. And there’s nothing on him. No email traces, no invoices, no texts. Nothing.”
I gritted my teeth and glanced at Styx, who was listening closely. Ky wasn’t originally gonna tell the prez about the plan to get Phebe, because of his fucking wedding, but that didn’t last long. Styx knew something was up with his VP. He read him like I read Flame and Vike. So Ky fessed up, and Styx was all for the plan. He’d had to push his wedding back by a month anyhow to get the pastor Mae wanted to conduct the ceremony, so he had time to kill.
“But you found something?” Ky translated as Styx signed.
Tanner sighed, the black circles around his eyes showing how hard the brother had been working. “I got something.” He shook his head, and my blood ran cold. I knew whatever he had found wasn’t good.
Tanner opened the file in front of him and threw a photograph toward the prez. Styx looked at it, then gave it to Ky. “Some middle-of-nowhere ghost town?”
Ky passed the picture around. Vike handed it to me, and I studied it. It was an aerial shot, and the picture was grainy, but from what I could make out, it was just a huge piece of land scattered with decrepit old buildings.
I passed the picture along. “Fucker owns this?”
Tanner faced me. “Yeah, or at least his father did. He’s dead now, but the deeds are still in his father’s name. Been in the family for decades. Took me a while to trace it.” He shook his head. “Meister is notorious among the Klan. Right, Tank?”
“Yeah,” Tank agreed. “Never met him either, but we’d all heard of him. Prick has been mobilizing for years for the race war they think is coming. Real serious, Oklahoma-City-bomb shit. From what we’ve heard, the guy has a one-track mind when it comes to advancing the white race. You think Hitler was fucked up? Well, imagine if he had a kid who was one built motherfucker, with a fucking carbon copy of his psycho mind; and you’ve got Meister. Fucker ain’t even German. Just wishes he was, spouting German phrases around like he’s born and bred Berlin. Delusional asshole.”
“This ain’t gonna be easy,” Tanner finished, looking at me, Vike, Flame, Hush and Cowboy. It was the five of us who had agreed to go looking for Phebe. Hush and Cowboy nodded at me to let me know they were still in.
“So he’s in this ghost town?” Ky asked, translating Styx’s sign language again. “If so, we’ll all just go in and get him, make the fucker talk and tell us where he’s got Phebe.”
Tanner sat forward. “He ain’t just living in the ghost town or hiding out. That’s where he has his enterprise.”
“Enterprise?” Ky echoed. It was his own question this time.
Tanner nodded. “From what I can tell, it’s a fucking brothel. Members of the Aryan Brotherhood, Klan, or Klan sympathizers, can go there for a night or a few days at a time.” Tank shifted uncomfortably next to him. “Ain’t sure, but I’m thinking it ain’t just getting your dick sucked and fucked. It’ll be real fucked-up shit. If Meister’s reputation is anything to go by, we would be walking into an organized, armed hellhole.” Tanner’s eyes darkened. “I get the Klan has a reputation for being full of backward rednecks. I ain’t gonna lie—growing up, most of my father’s cronies were that way. Thick as fuck and couldn’t do shit without screwing it up. Skinheads, lower-ranked soldiers, you know?”
“But there were some members that weren’t,” Tank continued. He cast an embarrassed glance at Tanner. “We weren’t, for starters.”
Tanner nodded. “It’s not the norm, but some of us were good. Smart, strong fighters, or just outright fucking psychos. The skinheads and rednecks are the foot soldiers. The likes of us, the likes of Meister, are the fucking SS. The planners, leaders, the generals—the ones who believe in the cause so much that they’re fucking lethal with what they’ll do, what they’re capable of. Meister is true Aryan Brotherhood; he’s preparing for war. He’s the real fucking deal.”
“And now he’s in our neck of the woods to stir up shit?” I asked.
Tanner nodded. “Comes from northern Texas. Never moved our way before. But the Klan are building day by day, joining forces with other white supremacist gangs—like the Brotherhood—and with the shit that’s on the news twenty-four-seven, blacks and whites at each others throats, he’s moved to the headquarters.” The brother’s jaw clenched. “To my father and uncle, who’ll be protecting him from being found out by the feds.” He sighed and ran his hand down his face. “From what I can figure out, this ghost-town brothel of his has only existed in the last year or so. He’s looking to fund something.”
“They ain’t dealing guns?” Cowboy drawled. “I thought that’s what Rider said the contract with the cult was for?”
“Rider was sure it was guns. At least it was when he was dealing with the Klan—it was all about arms. The Klan was selling them on and taking a cut.”
“His fucking twin,” Hush spat. “He changed the arrangement, didn’t he? When Rider was locked up in cult prison?”
“Think so,” Tanner said after a few seconds of silence.
“Then what the fuck are they dealing? What was Judah giving them if not Israeli guns?”
“Women.”

 Whitney’s 4.5 Star Review

I never liked MC romance until I read Tillie Cole. I just couldn’t deal with the lifestyle and the way it was portrayed (whether or not it was authentic) and had no desire to read them. Then a guy name Styx and his group of rough, at times violent, but loveable guys showed up.

Five books in, I still get drawn into each book in this series more than the last. While I do have my favorite (#FlameWhore), I’ve had a special place in my heart for all of the Psycho Trio since book one. With AK’s story, we get to dive into the ex-military sniper’s past and just what turned him into the man he is now.

He and his love interest Phebe’s story is a wild ride of violence, suspense, heartbreak, love and self-forgiveness. Like Tillie’s other books in the series, it’s not easy to read. Themes of drug abuse, rape, torture and violence are woven into the story. I don’t often care for books with such detail but the author’s ability to create a sense of hope and redemption for her characters keeps it from being overwhelmingly dark for me.

I adore series like the Hangmen because each book builds on the last (yes, you must read in order) and while each book wraps up a story, it also gives clues into the next. Even though AK and Phebe are the main characters, honestly, my favorite parts of the book were still Flame and Maddie and their role with Ash. I cried, of course but they were tears of relief and happiness for these characters.  Phebe’s reunion with her sister and Grace was particularly moving.

Any fans of this series will find this a welcome addition to their Hangmen collection and I can’t wait for the next book! Not quite sure whose story it will be but I have some theories!
