Clove Calloway knows within an hour of picking up her husband Turner from the airport that something is different, yet she can’t pinpoint what. Together since college, they know everything about each other… so why has she spent the last few days watching everything he does, hoping for a clue? What could have happened within the week he was gone?
One way or another, she’s going to find out.
When Clove enlists the help of her brother Zach, a police detective, she’s afraid her suspicions of infidelity will be confirmed. Terrified that such news will crush her heart, she sets about preparing for the worst, only to find it’s much more than she could have imagined- there is no other woman.
Clove’s life is about to descend into a web of deceit, lies, and betrayal.
Appearances can be deceiving…and only the Master Manipulator will be left standing.
*Note* This book contains graphic scenes of physical and sexual violence. Reader discretion is advised.
I jump, catching sight of Zack out of my peripheral vision.
“Christ, you scared the shit out of me!”
I sit back in my chair with a smile on my face, placing my hand over my heart as I slump back in my seat. I laugh, finding the situation funny. Pulling my ear buds out, I watch my brother as he strolls in and sits across from me at my desk. But he’s not laughing or smiling.
“There’s something wrong,” I say in a strangled voice.
“Yeah, there is.”
“Is . . .?”
I start crying and can’t seem to get any words to come out. My chest starts heaving and I hold onto the edge of my desk, my knuckles snow white from my tight grip.
“Is he cheating on me?”
“It’s worse, Clove. Much worse.”
The way he looks at me tells me whatever his news is, it’s going to rip me to shreds.
“Wha-what is it?” I can barely choke the words out.
Whitney’s Four Star Review
Contrite fried my brain! When I finished this book, I had a WTF moment and then proceeded to stay awake most of the night wondering ‘what just happened?’
So yes, this book is definitely an erotic suspense novel that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It’s hard to talk about the plot without revealing spoilers so I won’t get into much detail. Basically, Clove is suspicious when her husband returns home acting much different than normal. He’s not the same husband who left a week ago for a business trip.
Is he cheating? Is he hiding something? Clove’s police detective brother helps and what they find is devastating new for Clove. Then the web of lies and betrayal really begin.
I think Kathy Coopmans did a great job giving up a unique storyline that will keep readers interested in what plot twists are coming next. The plot isn’t necessarily that complicated but Kathy wrote it in a way that will keep the surprises coming and there are definitely shocking moments involved. You can’t quite figure out the character’s minds.
I won’t lie, I don’t love Clove. There were moments I hated her and moments I really liked her. But this is one of those mindf**k books where you just have to sit back after it’s over and process because you’re just not sure what happened.
I recommend this book if you like dark and twisted romance. There is some brutality/violence and the sex is explicit (and there is a lot of it). So definitely 18 and over.
Word on the street is that the author will likely write a sequel to help wrap up this story. Until then, I made up my own ending to calm my brain down.
