Leaving Amarillo by Caisey Quinn
Neon Dreams #1
Release Date: March 17, 2015
Dixie Lark hasn’t had it easy. She lost her parents in an accident when she was young and grew up in a ramshackle house on a dirt road in Amarillo with her ailing grandparents and overprotective older brother. Thanks to her grandfather, Dixie learned to play a mean fiddle, inspired by the sounds of the greats—Johnny and June, Waylon, and Hank. Her grandfather’s fiddle changed Dixie’s life forever, giving her an outlet for the turmoil of her broken heart and inspiring a daring dream.
Ten years later, Dixie and her brother, Dallas, are creating the music they love and chasing fame with their hot band, Leaving Amarillo. But Dixie isn’t enjoying the ride. All she can think about is Gavin, the band’s tattooed, tortured drummer who she’s loved since they were kids. She knows he feels the connection between them, but he refuses see her as more than his best friend’s little sister.
Convinced that one night with Gavin will get him out of her system, Dixie devises a plan. She doesn’t know that her brother has forbidden Gavin from making a move on her-a promise he swore he’d always keep . . . a promise that once broken will unexpectedly change the future for Dixie, Gavin and the band.
Whitney’s Four Star Review
Leaving Amarillo is a sexy and tension filled start to a great new series by Caisey Quinn.
The story follows three young musicians and their dreams of country music stardom. Dixie, Dallas (Dixie’s brother), and Gavin (long time friend). Dixie has been in love with Gavin for years and is tired of being quiet about it. Determined to know one way or another how he feels about her, she lays is all on the line. Gavin is torn between keeping his promise to Dallas and his growing feelings for Dixie.
But a whole host of problems are waiting to interfere. The band’s new manager, Gavin’s mother, and secrets Gavin is holding on to.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book. Caisey did a great job of developing Dixie into a strong, admirable girl and Gavin has a perfect broody, bad boy musician quality to him. His past breaks my heart and I shed a few tears learning how Gavin grew up. There is a lot left to learn about these characters as the series goes on and I am very much looking forward to knowing Dallas better in the next book.
One thing I enjoyed most is Caisey’s ability to write well about music. What do I mean by that? I think she captures very well how musicians feel, how they think and makes the music they play come alive on the pages with her descriptions.
Please note this is not a stand alone and is book one in the Neon Dreams series. I will definitely be waiting for book two which is coming soon!
