About Becoming Calder

There is a place in modern day America with no electricity, no plumbing, and no modern conveniences. In this place, there is no room for dreams, no space for self-expression, and no tolerance for ambition.

In this place, there is a boy with the body of a god and the heart of a warrior. He is strong and faithful and serves his family honorably. But he dares to dream of more.

In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.

Becoming Calder is the story of good versus evil, fear versus bravery, and the truth that the light of love has always found its way into even the darkest of places . . . From the beginning of time, to the end of the world.

THIS IS THE FIRST PART IN A TWO-PART SIGN OF LOVE SERIES INSPIRED BY AQUARIUS. THE SECOND PART, FINDING EDEN, WILL RELEASE SIMULTANEOUSLY. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Whitney’s Million Star Review of Becoming Calder

Calder grows up in a world vastly different than most Americans. In Acadia, he is taught to be obedient at all times and to never question his place in life. Never dream, never strive for more.

As a curious child, Calder began to question the world around him and wonder what life outside of Acadia is like. Meeting Eden, a beautiful child who grows into an even more beautiful young woman only makes him dreams grow stronger. But Eden is not Calder’s and she never will be.

As the two grow into their teens, an unlikely and forbidden friendship forms, turning to love despite the dangers they know they will face if they are discovered. Eden also does not like the hand she has been dealt in life and dreams of more. She dreams of loving Calder.

Four days out, I am still overwhelmed by this story. There is so much to the plot other than the small piece I described above but I don’t want to ruin a single thing. I started crying in the prologue and then managed to keep mostly dry eyes again until the last few chapters.

Mia has torn me up all over again just like she did with her previous books. I think that’s what makes her one of my ‘drop everything and read her new books immediately’ authors. The incredible emotions Mia elicits through this story and her characters are matched only by her previous books. Very few authors get to me like she does.

Becoming Calder has a different feel to it than other novels and it’s hard to describe. I think a lot of it has to do with the characters. They remain young at the end of the book (18 and 20) and their lack of life experience gives the book a beautiful innocence. Both dreamers, their ideals and wishes for a better life along with their fight to love each other dominate the story.

The setting is also very different than any other romance novel I’ve read. I thought I might know what it was from be blurb (and I was right) but in case you don’t know, I don’t want to give it away. Just know that Mia does a very accurate job describing the type of place and mentality of Acadia and what these young characters face in their day to day lives. So even though we may not be able to relate to it doesn’t mean it’s not real. (Yes, I have had experience through my family with this type of setting/situation)

There is a lot of sexual tension as the characters grow up and definitely sex although it’s not quite as descriptive (probably due the age of the characters). But once again, Mia has done an incredible job of balancing the storyline, character development and sexy times to pull together an emotionally gripping read.

Please note that unlike Mia’s other books, this is not a stand alone. Finding Eden is the sequel and not just a companion novel. I recommend reading them back to back. Trust me, you’ll want to. Luckily, they release the same day so you’ll be fine. I can’t wait to see where this story is going!

A million stars! This will go right next to Archer’s Voice on my Top of 2014 List!

**  As I’m writing this blog post, I’m 25% into Finding Eden because yes, I stayed up until midnight last night until it went live!  I’m not sure exactly where the story will lead but I am already pleased with where I’m at!  Calder = Swoon!
